analysis of the writer s style or theme
Instructions: The paper should be typed in MLA format. Refer to your English handbook for MLA documentation guides. Use at least 6 in-text citations and a Works Cited page with 4 entries. You may use only 1 block quote; it is not necessary to use a block quote at all. I prefer citations that are a combination of direct quotations and paraphrases.
The paper should be type in word, approximately 1500 words in length.
Choose one of the the writers from a list I will provide to further examine. These are selected writers from this semester. Read at least 2 other stories ( not novels or poems) by that writer, in addition to the story in our text. the research paper is an analysis of the writer’s style or themes, as seen in at least 3 stories. The following are points you may include.
Major themes; show how a similar theme is carried out in the three stories you examine (example: woman’s issues in Chopin’s stories)
Elements of a literary period or a particular style that you see as a thread in this writer’s work (example; minimalism in Carver’s story)
(The author that I chose is Zora Neal Hurston and the three stories I chose were Sweat, Magnolia flower, and Mother Catherine. You can google those stories also they are very short stories about 8 pages each)
Do not try to include too much, especially biographical information.Focus narrowly, and go in depth. You may include brief information about the writer’s life, but only as that biographical information connects to your thesis ( main idea of the paper). For example, if you write about James Joyce’s work, you would certainly need to identify him as an Irish writer and a leader in the Irish Renaissance movement, one who was on the forefront of modernism.
You must use at least one outside source besides the additional stories. You should examine analyses by literary critics. A good place to start is Literary Resources Center, one of the NSCC Library’s databases. There are other resources in the reference section of our library.
