Topic–Identifying a Controversial Issue
An appropriate topic for the argumentative essay should be one that interests you is neither too broad nor too narrow, is open to controversy, and is not already overly argued by other people.
Make sure your topic interests you. Whatever topic you choose, it should be something that interests you, something that you feel strongly about, something that’s dear to your heart. If it’s an argument that affects you and that you have personal experience about, it will be easier for you to build your ethos with personal experience. Make sure your topic is neither too broad nor too narrow. A topic like “presidential campaigns” might be too big for you to handle in a few pages. In contrast, “the use of scare tactics in presidential campaign ads” might be easier to handle. In a similar way, “advertising” sounds vague and broad while “truth in advertising” is more focused. On the other hand, too narrow topics are those that deal with trivial topics that your readers are not likely to be interested in. Make sure your topic is controversial. A controversial topic is one that people have different opinions about. For example, the “illegitimacy of thefts” is not a controversial topic while “the appropriate punishment for first-time theft offenders” is a more controversial one. Similarly, “the harmful effects of smoking” is not really a topic of controversy, but “heavy taxation on cigarettes” might be. Make sure your topic is not already overly argued by other people. Topics such as “abortion” or “the death penalty” might yield easy arguments, but they have been argued so much that it’s very hard to come up with anything new to say about them. Unless you have something really unique and original to contribute to such topics, I’d strongly recommend that you avoid such topics.

This essay should be quite different from your previous essay in several ways. Content An argument essentially contains a central claim (your thesis) backed up by several supporting claims, which are further supported by concrete evidence–examples, other people’s opinions, etc. This argumentative essay not only will involve sound, logical reasoning but may also include some of the other techniques you’ve learned and used in the previous essays: narration, description, and analysis. One thing to keep in mind is that since you’re making an argument on a controversial issue, there’s always the other side. It’s vitally important that you address the other side if you want to present a fair and convincing argument. Organization While there’re always multiple ways to organize any kind of essay, the one that’s described in the Patterns text provides an easy option: introduction, claim, evidence, support, and conclusion. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos A good argumentative essay requires a somewhat balanced use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Without ethos, your essay will not carry credibility; without pathos, it won’t have effective emotional affect; and without logos, don’t expect that your audience will buy into your argument. Sources Using other people’s arguments, especially those from reputable sources, to support your own argument is often an effective and necessary means of argumentation. Reflect on your behavior, reactions and responses when in a conflict or difficult situation with another. This can be at work, or in your personal like. It is often good to think of a particular situation you were in. What happened? How did it effect you? What were you thinking? What did you do? How was the outcome?  What would you do the next time something like this happened? Look at it from a different perspective (the perspective of the person you are in this situation with). This exercise will help you to become skilled in “perspective taking’ or “re-framing.”  Try to look at this experience and describe it from different perspectives. For example, how did other participants view the situation and what did it mean to them?  What would a neutral observer have seen and heard?  Now that you are revisiting this, do you see the situation differently?  Look beneath the surface and try to explain why the people involved (especially you) behaved as they did. 

Homelessness in America is a persistent, complex, and widely-occurring problem that incorporates many economic, social, and psychological dimensions. After years of war and economic decline, the ranks of the homelessness have grown to include families with children (35%), military veterans (23%), children (25%), persons fleeing domestic violence (30%), and the mentally ill (20-25%) (National Student Campaign, 2012). Additionally, the number of homeless young adults, aged 18 to 24, is growing, giving homelessness a new face (Saulny, 2012).

With regard to the problem of homelessness, some people perceive a call for greater human compassion, while others demand more effective social policy and more comprehensive public health services. Still others insist on greater individual responsibility and more respect for the needs of business, reinforced by aggressive criminal justice responses. 

Your paper will examine a broad range of private and public responses (e.g., laws, policies, programs, and individual behaviors) to the problem of homelessness in America.

1. You will examine five to seven such responses in depth from the perspectives of virtue ethics and distributive, commutative, and retributive justice.
2. You will summarize the responses and identify the consequences of each response for the problem of homelessness.
3. You will evaluate competing and conflicting views about the appropriateness of private and public responses to the problem of homelessness and present a balanced conclusion about the justness of each response.
4. Finally, you will draw an overall conclusion about whether, 30 years from now, the next generation of Americans will view today’s responses to homelessness as just.

Writing the Final Paper

The Final Paper:

1. Must be eight to ten double-spaced pages in length, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
2. Must include a title page with the following:
   1. Title of paper
   2. Student’s name
   3. Course name and number
   4. Instructor’s name
   5. Date submitted
3. Must start with a short introductory paragraph which includes a clear thesis statement (your answer to the question: Will the next generation of Americans view as just, today’s response to homelessness?). The thesis statement itself is just that – a statement of what your essay demonstrates. The thesis is not a question, and it is not a summary of the topics discussed. You should avoid using the first person voice, avoid sentences like “This paper will show that…” and avoid asking questions with your thesis. Rather, your thesis should make declarative statements.
4. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought.
5. Must end with a short paragraph which includes a conclusion. The conclusion and thesis must be consistent.
   1. Your paper must logically develop the thesis in a way that leads to the conclusion, and that development must be supported by facts, fully explained concepts or assertions, and persuasive reasoning.
6. Must use at least five scholarly resources, including a minimum of two from the Ashford University Library.
7. Must be in your own words. While brief quotes from sources may be used, altogether the total amount of quoted text must be less than five percent of the body of your paper.
   1. When you use someone else’s words, they must be enclosed in quotation marks followed by an APA in-text short citation (author, year, page number) to your source. The in-text citation must correspond to a full APA citation for the source on the reference page at the end of the paper.

9. Must include a separate reference page, formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Select a news article dated within the previous two months, and analyzes the issue using the economic concepts and theory learned in this class. Develop a 5 page double-spaced paper that advocates a position on this issue. Title page, appendices and bibliography are not to be counted in the page total for the narrative portion of the paper.
