Do rational people commit crimes? Do they choose to commit a crime? Are they intelligent?

respond to the following prompts in your post:

  • Think about the following questions: Do rational people commit crimes? Do they choose to commit a crime? Are they intelligent? Do they aim to maximize pleasure and minimize pain? If someone believes all of these questions they most likely would agree with choice theories. Speculate on the school of criminology choice theories are derived from. Next, based on your selection of school of criminology, debate whether or not you agree with these theories. Justify your response.
  • – A number of studies have been undertaken which show a very real connection between delinquent and /or criminal behavior, and single parent families. Wright and Wright’s (1994) research shows that single parent families, and in particular mother-only families, produce more delinquent children than two parent families. Indeed the very absence of intact families makes gang membership more appealing (Muehlenberg 2002). Based on this information, discuss whether or not you believe these statements are true or false. Provide support for your response.

How can we reconcile civil liberty and national security? Are we better off opting for more liberty or more security?

elect one topic for you to develop and remember to use the simulation to assist in applying the concepts and ideas expressed in the chapters.

Chapter 1: Combating terrorism has entailed restrictions on civil liberties. How can we reconcile civil liberty and national security? Are we better off opting for more liberty or more security? Are the two goals mutually exclusive? Have Americans become less supportive of the limitations on liberty put into place after the terror attacks in 2001, or do they still perceive that it makes sense to give up some liberties in order to feel more secure?
Chapter 3: Consider the growing trend of marijuana legalization in some states, despite its unlawfulness at the federal level. Is it fair to those incarcerated on marijuana charges in states that currently outlaw the drug? When does federalism give citizens more protection, and when does it lead to potential instability? Would the example of the legalization of recreational marijuana be an example of the states as “laboratories of democracy”?
Chapter 4: How much free speech should be allowed in the United States? Consider controversial speakers on campus: what is the duty of a college to provide a platform for different viewpoints? What is the duty of a college to provide for the safety of its students? Is the best way to counter controversial or even hate speech be more speech? Or does allow such speech lead to greater danger, like violence?

Today, there are several options for people who want to pursue a legal claim. This includes filing a lawsuit in court, but it also includes alternative forms of dispute resolution (referred to as ADR) such as mediation and arbitration. In both mediation and arbitration, the dispute is resolved outside of court, with the main difference being that mediation requires the parties to voluntarily agree to a resolution, while arbitration requires the parties to abide by the decision of a private arbitrator.

For this discussion, choose one of the disputes listed below and explain whether you think the best way to resolve it is through a lawsuit, mediation, or arbitration.

* A child is injured when a very popular folding high-chair collapses, and it appears that the high-chair was improperly designed and unable to reliably support the weight of the average infant.

For this assignment, students will be creating a hypothetical, growing, start-up organization where you will be assuming the role of a Compensation Director.  The organization can be in any industry, however it is suggested that the type of industry, general types of positions (i.e. laborers, entry-level, administrative, sales, specific professional positions, etc.) and an overall business strategy (i.e. opening new facilities in other locations, revenue growth, expansion into new markets, etc.) is established prior to beginning Part 2.  *The “organization” should have at least three different levels of positions: entry-level, management/professional and executive.  **The information in Part 1 should be included on a “Background” slide that precedes the actual presentation to the Board of Directors (in other words, this is for “internal to class” purposes” only).

Part 2 – Prepare a PowerPoint presentation for your firm’s Board of Directors that summarizes your recommendations for the compensation structure for each of the different levels of positions.  Your recommendations should address the type of compensation for each level of positions (i.e. base pay wage/salary, commission or both), incentive pay plans (if any, and also individual or group) for each level of positions, and the how “regular” pay increases will be determined (set percentage, Cost of Living Adjustment, Pay for Performance/Merit Base) as well as the rationale and support for your recommendations. Additionally, external workforce factors, such as: unemployment rates, market forces and other economic factors and trends should be included as well.

presentation should be narrated and “audience appropriate”.

Any and all citations and references must be APA format.
