Deborah enters your office, and you notice that she looks apprehensive. “Hi, Deborah. What’s up?” you ask, hoping that nothing is wrong.  “Well, your team is doing an excellent job researching, and you’ve been keeping me up-to-date on your findings. My concern is that we are approaching this from a narrow-minded approach.”  “How so?” You ask. You are puzzled. “Our team has been looking at every aspect of the company and considering both internal and external pros and cons.”  “We need your findings put into some kind of management system so we can really see where we are headed regarding our global expansion. I think we need to cover our bases here. Please report back to me next week with your thinking put into a framework.” Complete the following: •A balanced scorecard suggests that we view the organization from four perspectives (the learning & growth perspective, the business process perspective, the customer perspective, and the financial perspective). You talk with Mike and Tiffany at lunch. “You’ve done some great research and brought up some good ideas to implement in the presentation,” you say. “There is one element that we are missing.”  “One of the most important aspects of the strategy: our competitors,” Tiffany states.  “I’ve already done some analysis, and there are many in the global market. It seems like there are several office furniture companies thriving, but not as many custom furniture manufacturers,” Mike elaborates.   “Well, we need to provide the board with some solid competitors. I’ll work on finding our top two,” you say. Complete the following: •Who are your top 2 global competitors in the market?  •Provide a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis for each competitor.  •Why are they direct competitors?  •What is their competitive advantage?    •Could you form a cooperative strategy with any of the competitors?  ◦If so, how? ◦If not, why?   •What strategies could you use to build a competitive market profile?  •What is balanced scorecard?   The materials found in the M.U.S.E. may help you with this assignment such as the audio file Choosing a Strategy. Resolve this problem: USING TWO EXTERNAL SOURCES

The newly hired CEO of a small, nonprofit organization was appalled by the behavior of the organization’s CFO toward the female staff. He believed the manner in which the CFO related to these women was disrespectful and bordered on abusive. Some of these women were offended by the CFO’s attitude, while others chalked it up to his abrupt, abrasive personality and simply ignored it.

The CEO met with the CFO and made it clear that his behavior was unacceptable and would have to change. The two did not meet subsequently. The CEO was heard to say to others in the organization that the CFO “had to go.”

Three months later, at a monthly meeting of the board of directors, the CEO added an item to the agenda that substantially modified and reduced the CFO’s job responsibilities and authority. The CFO usually attended the board meetings but had notified the CEO and the board two weeks earlier that he would not be able to attend this particular meeting. The rationale that the CEO presented was framed as strengthening the integrity of financial reporting in the organization. This explanation appeared to be reasonable, and the board approved the proposal.

At 11:30 p.m. in the evening following the meeting, the CEO e-mailed the CFO, notifying him of the board’s action modifying his position.

Use this as a guideline:

a. What are the ethics issues in this case?

b. What management mistakes were made in this case?

c. Who are the key stakeholders in this case?

d. What steps can be taken within this organization to remedy these mistakes?

FINAL PROJECT COHESION CASE OVERVIEW

FINAL PROJECT COHESION CASE OVERVIEW

Throughout this course you will own and operate The Broadway Cafe taking advantage of business practices discussed in this text to increase profits, keep the business running, and bring the cafe into the 21st century. Upon completion of the case you will have performed a vast array of activities including:

  • Use technology to gain a competitive advantage
  • Build an e-business strategy
  • Create an online community for collaboration
  • Deploy a wireless network for customers
  • Use CRM to implement marketing campaigns and sales strategies
  • Deal with different ethical and information security dilemmas
  • Project management activities for implementing solutions
  • Understand how technology is used throughout a business by all the different functional areas

You have recently inherited your grandfather’s coffee shop, The Broadway Cafe, which is conveniently located in downtown (your city). The cafe offers many kinds of specialized coffees, teas, a full-service bakery, and homemade sandwiches, soups, and salads. Your grandfather first opened The Broadway Cafe in 1952, and it was a local hotspot for many years.

Unfortunately, business has been steadily declining over the last five years. Although your grandfather was an expert at running the coffee shop, it is outdated. There are no computers in the store, and all ordering takes place manually. Your grandfather had a terrific memory and knew all of his customers by name, but unfortunately, none of this information is located anywhere in the store. The family recipes for the baked goods and soups are also stored in your grandfather’s memory. Inventory is tracked in a notepad, along with employee payroll, and marketing coupons. The Cafe does not have a Web site, uses very little marketing except word-of-mouth, and essentially still operates the same as it did in 1952.

Overview

Advances in technology make it easier for people to copy everything from music to pictures. Technology poses new challenges for our ethics— the principles and standards that guide our behavior toward other people. Intellectual property, copyright infringement, pirated software, counterfeit software are a few of the ethical issues stemming from advances in technology.

PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS:

Each week you will submit your response to the business situation presented. Use an APA formatted paper with a Title page and a References page. Your paper should be double-spaced and written in Times New Roman size 12 font. The paper will be written in an essay format. Do not use a question and answer format.

Making Business Decisions I

You have a wide variety of employees at The Broadway Cafe.  Some of the employees have been working at the cafe since before you were born and some are brand new.  Some of the employees you trust as well as you trusted your grandfather, and others are new to the cafe, and you are just starting to build a working relationship.

Last week you were faced with a difficult situation and had to fire one of your employees. This particular employee had a bad attitude, continually showed up late for work, and was caught stealing money out of the cash register. When the employee cleaned out his locker, you noticed him stuff a thumb drive into his pocket. You were suddenly concerned with other items he might have stolen while working at the cafe.

For this part of the project, you will write a paper in which you will respond to the following questions. Describe the problems you face as the business owner as you take over your grandfather’s business.

  • What can you do to protect your data while still building a sense of trust among your employees?
  • Develop a document discussing the importance of creating information management policies.
  • Be sure to highlight each policy that The Broadway Cafe should implement and how the policy can protect the company, its employees, and its data.

Note that the three countries are characterized by collectivism while the United States has an individualist culture. To prepare for your first outreach effort with each country, analyze the cultural similarities and differences that exist between the countries and the United States using Geert Hofstede’s Six Cultural Dimensions

Create a bar graph and/or table that summarizes the key cultural dimension comparison. Then, compare and contrast each country according to your findings. Discuss the implications of the relative cultural dimensions. How might they impact managing the global expansion project? Remember that you are adapting your approach from a United States centric view. (400-600 words).

This assignment lays the foundation for IP4, where you will apply your findings to forming an effective global team.

Step One:

Visit Geert Hofstede Cultural Dimensions

Step Two:

Create a country comparison using the United States in first dropdown menu box to see the values for the six cultural dimensions. After selecting the United States, a second and a third country can be chosen in the second dropdown menu box. Keep the United States in the first box and then repeat for each country (Mexico, China, and Saudi Arabia) involved in the fast food expansion project to see a comparison of their scores.

Step Three:

Create a bar graph and/or table to highlight how the four countries compare to the United States by using the value scores under the comparison to create the bar chart.  How to make a bar chart on Microsoft Word:

  1. Click “Insert” tab
  2. Click “Chart” in the Illustrations Group
  3. Select “Bar”
  4. Click “OK” to insert a chart and a spreadsheet will open alongside your Word document. The spreadsheet contains sample figures surrounded by a blue border. Column “A” contains data labels. The remaining columns contain data.
  5. Click a corner of the border. Drag it down or up to add or remove items from the graph.

Step Four:

Using your findings:

  • Explain Hofstede’s cultural dimensions.
  • Using the United States as a basis for comparison, evaluate each country’s similarities and differences relative to the franchise business deployment.
  • Discuss the implications for your initial communications within each country.  For example, what is the impact of collectivism relative to individualism regarding management communication?   Use Intellipath, MUSE, Beyond the Book. Live Chats and the CTU Library to help identify cultural characteristics that will be important during your first project meeting with each country.
