This week, you will determine a policy for your Final Paper and begin your research regarding the policy of your choosing. It is important to remember that your paper should focus on a specific policy and that your paper will need to address the following components:

  • Historical and constitutional basis for the American government’s structure
  • The system of checks and balances
  • The various roles (e.g., public opinion, media, special interest groups, etc.) concerning public policy and elections
  • The voting system and election process

Prepare: Since this is the first step in developing your Final Paper, it is recommended that you review POL201 Assignment Guide before beginning this assignment. A model POL201 Final Paper template and the POL201 Research Guide are both provided for you within the online classroom to utilize when completing your Final Paper. You should also review the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion and the list of some possible policies found in the Week 2 DQ and Final Paper Policy Examples in your online classroom, before completing this assignment.

The first step to researching your Final Paper is selecting a specific policy for your paper, which was part of the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion. Your paper must focus on a specific policy that focuses on an aspect of the United States government and ideally, that relates to your major and future career. You should be able to find research that will allow you to support your ideas. If you have questions or would like your instructor to approve your policy, please email them directly and/or discuss with your instructor and colleagues in the Week 2 Policy and Your Life discussion forum.

Reflect: Once you have found a topic that interests you, you will begin the research for your Final Paper this week. In addition to establishing your topic and the thesis for your paper, you will also provide an Annotated Bibliography (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. for four of the sources you intend to utilize to support your Final Paper. Each annotation should be a minimum of one full paragraph (five sentences) in length and should explain what the source discusses and how this links to your Final Paper topic. While your textbook can be utilized as a source, it does not count towards your four sources for this assignment. As your paper progresses, it is expected that you will find more sources to support your ideas for a minimum of eight sources are required for the final, with a minimum of five of those sources from the Ashford University Library databases. NITIAL POST: Parents, caregivers, and other family members are faced with many challenges when a child is diagnosed with a disability, disorder, or exceptionality. They may feel an urgency to learn about the condition, pursue treatment options, and understand what the short- and long-term outcomes might be. This is all while they may be coping with new information about their child, experiencing many mixed and complicated emotions (e.g., grief, stress, disappointment, relief, overwhelm, anxiety, etc). The search for information or support from others online is often one strategy family members pursue on their journey—and this process can be very helpful and supportive. However, it can be difficult to wade through information and to determine which information is valid or accurate, helpful and relevant, or potentially containing misinformation or biased perspectives.

The issues public relations professionals deal with are often complex. Frequently there may be gray areas or questions about related issues that require careful research and planning to address. For example, research on the negative side effects of a new drug might produce different findings. Different parties in an argument will structure pros and cons that, while truthful, will support only that organization’s argument. Scenario

Judy is a 16-year-old Asian female. Until 9 months ago, she was reported to be friendly and sociable. Her mother even used the term “life of the party” to describe her daughter. Her parents are unable to identify any specific event in her life that may have happened, but they report that she has suddenly become sullen and withdrawn. Most days she is reported to return from school, go to her room, close the door, and remain there. Her parents have to “almost drag” her to eat dinner with the family, and when she can, she eats alone in her room. She rarely eats much and is reported to have lost at least 10 pounds off her already slim frame. Her parents report that she rarely initiates a conversation with them, and when they question her about her behavior, or anything else, she snaps backs that she is fine and just needs to be left alone. Her parents also report that she sleeps almost all the time, she does not talk on the phone with friends, and seems to “just drag herself” around.

Her teachers report that she does a minimal amount of work and her grades are “passing, but barely.” She used to be in a gifted class, but her apparent lack of effort in school has resulted in her being removed from all honors and advanced placement classes. Socially she is reported to “be a loner”; she keeps to herself and has no reported best friend.

A child’s or adolescent’s disruptive behaviors can be challenging for a clinician. Disruptive behaviors can interrupt the counseling process, and they often signify the existence of emotions a child or adolescent is unable to express verbally. Some prospective child and adolescent clinicians may be ill-equipped to manage disruptive behaviors or recognize that the behaviors are symptomatic of an issue or disorder. This lack of knowledge may elicit a nontherapeutic response from a clinician, which can damage the development of a therapeutic relationship. A therapeutic relationship is vital in order to counsel children and adolescents effectively.

To prepare for this Assignment, review the Disruptive Behaviors Part Two media and select a particular child or adolescent with a disruptive behavior. Consider one strength and one weakness of the therapeutic relationship with the child or adolescent during the counseling sessions.
