english 101 project 1

This writing project focuses upon your opinions about what it means to be a member of a government that is set up as a democracy. What behaviors should be embraced by members of such a system of rule? If you wish, include personal examples, perhaps something you are you doing to lend your help to the running of the country? This is a far more complex and diverse writing concept than you might think. (I can see someone writing that one should not vote, ever, and this is why. I can see someone writing about why focusing only on one’s own accumulation of wealth is the best strategy to helping the country and here’s why. I can see someone writing about volunteering one’s time to help others is a good strategy to helping the country. I can list 1,000 other strategies to focus an essay around given this topic. Don’t assume it’s designed to have you write about “we need to vote” or something obvious like that. (That would be a decent strategy to start building an essay around, though.)

Our play An Enemy of the People explores the individual’s role in society. If we see a wrong, should we try to right it like Dr. Stockmann? What might this cost us personally? Whistle-blowers are in the news today. Maybe we have an obligation to act–peacefully–at times. But how and in what ways and why?

You’ll have to quote from the play at least one time, and find a way to use the quote to develop/support some idea you are working on.

Other than that, there are no outside sources required, but feel free to use one or more if you wish. You do not need to worry about a works cited page, but include some information at the end to help me find the sources you may have used. This aspect is not a grade impacting one. I’m not asking for MLA works cited pages.

short paper primary source assignment details

Here are a few links that may help you formulate your thoughts while helping you write an excellent paper. 1200 word minimum.

This is a short paper on primary source analysis. This paper is worth 100 points and has a minimum of 1200 words, (go over 1200). Be sure to list the hyperlink or full citation of the document on the top of the first page so that I can read/reference the document to assess your analysis. If the citation/hyper link is not listed on the top of the first page, I will not grade the paper. Use MLA (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. format for all citation including the secondary source Worlds Together, Worlds Apart stay away from quotations, use analysis to explain your points. Please follow the instructions so that you can earn full credit. Failure to follow instructions can result in a zero grade. As always email me with any questions.

Be sure to the thesis follows one of these formulas adopted from Univ of Iowa:

Use a formula to develop a working thesis statement (which you will need to revise later). Here are a few examples:

  1. Although most readers of ______ have argued that ______, closer examination shows that ______.
  2. ______ uses ______ and ______ to prove that ______.
  3. Phenomenon X is a result of the combination of ______, ______, and ______.

These formulas share two characteristics all thesis statements should have: they state an argument and they reveal how you will make that argument. They are not specific enough, however, and require more work.

Post early!!! The due date is the last day you can post, don’t wait for this day….post as soon as possible.

Remember that speeches are primary sources if they are discussing a topic in the time period of the person’s life. Stay away from obvious Bill of Rights, Monroe Doctrine ( see assignment for the Dos and Don’t s) etc. etc.

Be original, do not recycle a paper from other classes!!!

This is a great resource on how to write a thesis.

Open these docs and read them before starting this assignment. Here is an audio description:

All aspects of the grade must be met in order to receive the posted grade. All writing assignments will be graded according to the rubric. Follow the instructions carefully and ask questions. This will take planning on your part, you will need to plan early and ask for direction. Do not wait until the last minute to ask for clarification. Use MLA format for all posts. Lastly, be sure to include the historical context of all topics on ALL posts. This is a very important part of your grade. Summarizing a piece or video is insufficient.

Remember the 5 goals for this paper are:

1. The thesis is clearly identified in the first paragraph of the paper in bold letters and the thesis is relevant and relates to the historical context for this class. It follows the formula ( see video).

2. You paper is analytical and utilizes the Degrees of Analytical Complexity throughout. It is also 1200 words minimum.

3. You have clearly explained the purpose and focus of the paper. The paper cannot be a summary of the primary source. ( see video and read the assignment)

4. At the top of the paper place the following: “My primary source is ________________________ and it relates to this class because____(be specific)__________.

It can be found at this URL.” It has to lead directly to the the source.

Then list the hyperlink of the URL that goes directly to the source. ( Be sure it is not to a database where I have to look for it. It needs to be a direct link to the actual source).

5. My thesis is_______________________________________ Be sure it is a real thesis and not a simple summary of the events/arguments in the primary source you have chosen.

Any deviation from the assignment details will result in a zero.

Essay Writing Guidelines

Academic Essay

An academic essay is a continuous piece of writing focusing on a particular issue, which is carefully framed by the title.The writer must define the question, and then respond to it, supporting statements with evidence, example and logical argument.

Ok so why?Since the instructor already has an ‘answer’?

  • Think deeply about the issue
  • Develop the ability to think logically
  • Relate theoretical knowledge to particular issues.
  • Help you write cogently and fluently;

Begin by identifying the key elements; locate the information to support your response.This involves rereading lecture notes, reading assigned texts and brainstorming.

What does the assignment ask you to do? Describe, analyze, discuss, form an opinion, assess, etc.

Essay formats:

Introduction, a key part of your essay, and one that sets the tone for the reader; it should unravel the question, create threads, define key terms, AND give an indication of how you intend to answer the question.An introduction is read first but should be completed last, when you know the direction your answer has taken.

Development: this is the main section of your essay, where you set out your response, mixing argument with supporting evidence (facts, examples, lecture quotes, text quotes).Try to see it as a series of points, each to be developed in a separate paragraph, though there should be an overall thread linking the points in a thematic way. Sometimes you will find a national theme; at other times you may need to put a more artificial framework on your work.

Conclusion: another key part, where you pull together and restate, SUBTLEY, the main points of your essay and make an overall statement in response to the question.

The term Plagiarism includes but is not limited to:

The use of someone else’s words or ideas without crediting them. Use by paraphrase or direct quotation of the published or unpublished work of another person without fully and properly crediting the author with footnotes, citations or bibliographical reference;

  • Unacknowledged use of materials prepared by another person or agency engaged in the selling of term papers or other academic papers;
  • Unacknowledged use of original work/material that has been produced through collaboration with others without release in writing from collaborators.

3. You must of course document all direct quotations.You must also cite any ideas borrowed from a source: paraphrases of sentences, summaries of paragraphs or chapters, statistics and little-known facts, and tables, graphs, or diagrams. Summarizing and paraphrasing are covered in class.

Getting Started

Introduction Check List

 Have you got one?

Does it take your reader straight from the question into your answer?

Does it unpack/interpret/frame the question as necessary?

Does it broadly signpost your essay? Tell the reader where he/she is going?

Main Section Check List

Is your essay in paragraphs?

Does each paragraph express and develop a single idea?

Does each follow logically from the last, with no sudden breaks or shifts of topic?

Have you dealt with all the issues posed in the question?

Have you explicated important concepts/ideas, using examples where appropriate?

Have you substantiated all your arguments with fact/evidence/opinion/quotations?

Have you sidetracked anywhere, gone off on a tangent?

Conclusion Check List

Do you have one?

Have you drawn together the main threads of your essay? Can you restate them without just restating the question?

What general inferences can you draw from your argument? (Conclude don’t just summarize) Where do you stand in relation to the case/position?

Have you placed your conclusion in a broader context?

General Points

Vocabulary: should be varied, precise and apt; not vague and cliché ridden (got, sort of, kind of, like); nor too overblown, pedantic and repetitious.

Spelling: check technical, specialist terms and proper names in particular;

Grammar: Sentence structure should be varied; not too simple, nor too convoluted (complex sentences do not always signify complex thought)

Have you used signpost words (but, however, although, etc.) appropriately to give your essay cohesion.

Have you generally signposted where you are taking your reader: For example: (There are two points here…, Now to move on to…’ Having covered…’)?

Punctuation: Make sure it is used correctly; beware of overworking commas and dashes.

Bibliography/References: Have you done citations correctly; have you developed a bibliography page if required?
