Unit 3 Discussion: Gaming Addiction

Instructions for Discussion:

Gaming? Hobby, distraction, or addiction? Are people substituting gaming for other addiction substances?

In your Initial Post, answer one, some, or all the following questions. DEFEND YOUR ANSWER! What do you know that supports your assertion? Opinion without evidence has NO place in an academic environment! Uninformed, uneducated opinions will yield a low score on this discussion! No copy/paste plagiarism allowed. See Course Syllabus & Course Orientation for more detailed information regarding Discussion requirements.

Initial Post Prompt:

Should gaming qualify as a true addiction? If yes, at what point does gaming qualify as an addiction? (Hint: look at your textbook’s definition of a disorder).

Are the game makers responsible in any way? What else? Discuss

RUBIC

In order to create the best possible discussion posts, use this formatting guide for your Initial Post (and response post, if appropriate) for each Unit Discussion. This format is not required but will help you to formulate the best possible posts.

· Introduction o 1-3 sentences

· Purpose: To set up and state one’s claim

· Make your introduction interesting. How can you draw your readers in?

· What background information do we need to know to understand your claim?

· Supporting Evidence Paragraph #1 o Purpose: to prove your argument

· Topic Sentence: What is one item, fact, detail, or example you can tell the reader that will help them better understand your claim/position?

· Explain Topic Sentence: Do you need to explain your topic sentence? If so, do it here.

· State Evidence: Introduce your evidence (As Dr. Brown states “…”) (“To understand this issue we need to look at the following statistics…) and provide your supporting evidence (reasons, facts, examples, statistics, quotations, etc.) to prove/support/explain your position and topic sentence.

· Explain Evidence: How should we read or interpret the evidence you are providing to us? How does this evidence prove your point? Can be opinion based and is often 1-4 sentences.

· Concluding Sentence: End your paragraph with a concluding sentence that reasserts how the topic sentence helps us better understand and/or prove your claim.

· Supporting Evidence Paragraph #2, 3, etc. o Repeat above as necessary.

· Be sure to use appropriate transitions in your paragraphs and between paragraphs as needed ( Transitional Words and Phrases by The University of Wisconsin-Madison Writing Center)

· Counterargument Paragraph o Purpose: to anticipate your reader’s objections; make yourself sound more objective and reasonable. o Optional

· What possible argument might your reader pose against your argument/position and/or some aspect of your reasoning? Insert one or more of those arguments and refute them.

· End paragraph with a concluding sentence that reasserts your paper’s claim as a whole.

· Conclusion o Purpose: to reminder readers of your argument and supporting evidence and restate your claim and evidence. To illustrate to your instructor and peers that you have though critically and analytically about the issue.

· Your conclusion should tell us why we should care about your position. What is the significance of your claim? Why is it important to you as the writer or to me as the reader? What information should you or I take away from this?

· Your conclusion should create a sense of movement to a more complex understanding of the subject of your post.

· Your conclusion should serve as the climax of your post So, save your strongest analytical points for the end, and use them to drive your conclusion.

· Vivid, concrete language is as important in a conclusion as it is elsewhere–perhaps more essential, since the conclusion determines the reader’s final impression of your post. Do not leave them with the impression that your argument was vague or unsure.

· WARNING: It’s fine to introduce new information or quotations in your conclusions, as long as the new points grow from your argument. New points might be more general, answering the “so what” question; they might be quite specific. Just avoid making new claims that need lots of additional support.

Scenario: Safety
A 77, year old woman is hospitalized for management of her diabetes. She has a history of functional urinary incontinence and poor vision from the diabetes. The nursing staff observes her climbing over the side rails on numerous occasions at night en route to the bathroom. She is quite agitated during this time. The nursing assistant requests that you obtain an order for a body restraint at night to prevent her from falling out of bed.

• Should this patient be restrained to prevent injury?
• Would you request the order for a body restraint? Why, or why not?
• What other information is relevant to this case?
• What nursing interventions could be tried before considering a restraint?

You are checking blood pressures at a senior citizen health fair. After you check the blood pressure of an older woman, she asks you about starting an exercise program. She has not been exercising, but some of her friends have told her that she should start to exercise regularly.

Practicum Journal: Checkpoint for Certification Plan

Practicum Journal: Checkpoint for Certification Plan

Psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioners currently have only one choice for certification, which is through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC offers the “psychiatric/mental-health nurse practitioner (across the lifespan)” board certification (PMHNP-BC). In many states, board certification is needed as a prerequisite to being granted an NP license. Even if board certification is not a requirement for state licensure, it may be a requirement to receive privileges in various hospitals and other health care facilities. It may also be required by malpractice insurance providers prior to issuing coverage to NPs.

Consider your experiences with nurse Informaticists or technology specialists within your healthcare organization.

ASSIGNMENT: Of course, humans don’t fare too badly in this regard either. And healthcare is a great example. As specialists in the collection, access, and application of data, nurse informaticists collaborate with specialists on a regular basis to ensure that appropriate data is available to make decisions and take actions to ensure the general well-being of patients.

In this Discussion, you will reflect on your own observations of and/or experiences with informaticist collaboration. You will also propose strategies for how these collaborative experiences might be improved.

Review the Resources and reflect on the evolution of nursing informatics from a science to a nursing specialty.

Consider your experiences with nurse Informaticists or technology specialists within your healthcare organization.

eadings pertaining to the e-portfolio, as well as research the topic.

The student will read the assigned readings pertaining to the e-portfolio, as well as research the topic. The student will define an e-portfolio for the graduate student and for an advanced practice nurse. The PowerPoint slide presentation will include discussion of the importance and purpose of developing and using an e-portfolio as a graduate student, then identify and discuss items that should be in included in an e-portfolio per the grading rubric. The student will provide five (5) examples of items that would be included in an e-portfolio. The presentation will conclude with a summary and recommendations on how the student will use the e-portfolio as a graduate student and as an advanced practice nurse (APN) in the future.

Preparing the Presentation

  1. Must be a professional, scholarly prepared PowerPoint presentation of 8-10 slides including at least five scholarly references.
  2. You should have at least 8-10 slides, not including the title slide and reference slides.
  3. Speaker notes are present for each slide. It is important to note that if you could not give your presentation and someone would have to stand in for you, he or she would need to know what you were going to say. Use the speaker-notes section so that someone may step in for you and not miss a beat.
  4. Maintain the 6x6x6 rule for a professional PowerPoint presentation. No more than 6 lines per slide, 6 words per line, and 6 slides without a graphic.
  5. All aspects of the presentation must be in APA format as expressed in the 6th edition.
  6. Ideas and information from professional sources must be cited correctly.
  7. References may include one dictionary source, one textbook source, and four scholarly peer-reviewed journals published in the last 5 years. Total of six sources. No Wikipedia or CINAHL Nursing guide articles.
  8. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and citations are consistent with formal academic writing.

Identify one professional journal and one nursing or health care conference where you might present your project. Discuss why each of your choices is the best option for you to disseminate your new knowledge.

Dissemination of EBP and research, such as presenting results at a conference or writing an article for a journal, is an important part of professional practice. Identify one professional journal and one nursing or health care conference where you might present your project. Discuss why each of your choices is the best option for you to disseminate your new knowledge.

As a nurse practitioner, you prescribe medications for your patients. You make an error when prescribing medication to a 5-year-old patient. Rather than dosing him appropriately, you prescribe a dose suitable for an adult.

What type of drug should you prescribe based on your patient’s diagnosis? How much of the drug should the patient receive? How often should the drug be administered? When should the drug not be prescribed? Are there individual patient factors that could create complications when taking the drug? Should you be prescribing drugs to this patient?

These are some of the questions you might consider when selecting a treatment plan for a patient. As an advanced practice nurse prescribing drugs, you are held accountable for people’s lives on a daily basis. Patients and their families will often place trust in you because of your position. With this trust comes power and responsibility, as well as an ethical and legal obligation to “do no harm.” It is important that you are aware of current professional, legal, and ethical standards for advanced practice nurses with prescriptive authority. In this Discussion, you explore ethical and legal implications of scenarios and consider how to appropriately respond.

Scenario 1:

As a nurse practitioner, you prescribe medications for your patients. You make an error when prescribing medication to a 5-year-old patient. Rather than dosing him appropriately, you prescribe a dose suitable for an adult.

Scenario 2:

A friend calls and asks you to prescribe a medication for her. You have this autonomy, but you don’t have your friend’s medical history. You write the prescription anyway.

Scenario 3:

You see another nurse practitioner writing a prescription for her husband who is not a patient of the nurse practitioner. The prescription is for a narcotic. You can’t decide whether or not to report the incident.

Scenario 4:

During your lunch break at the hospital, you read a journal article on pharmacoeconomics. You think of a couple of patients who have recently mentioned their financial difficulties. You wonder if some of the expensive drugs you have prescribed are sufficiently managing the patients’ health conditions and improving their quality of life.

To prepare:

  • – Review Chapter 1 of the Arcangelo and Peterson text, as      well as articles from the American Nurses Association, Anderson and      Townsend, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Philipsend and Soeken.
  • – Select one of the four scenarios listed above.
  • – Consider the ethical and legal implications of the      scenario for all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist,      patient, and the patient’s family.
  • – Think about two strategies that you, as an advanced      practice nurse, would use to guide your ethically and legally responsible      decision-making in this scenario.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post an explanation of the ethical and legal implications of the scenario you selected on all stakeholders involved such as the prescriber, pharmacist, patient, and the patient’s family. Describe two strategies that you, as an advanced practice nurse, would use to guide your decision making in this scenario.
