bus3382 discussion questions

1. No format needed.

2. 200-250 words for each question.

Sample answer for Q1:

Not every aspect of technology is positive. Theoretically, this unprecedented access to information should mean we are better-informed and more productive than we were in any previous generation. Employers know that not every aspect of technology is positive. Studies suggest access to the Internet during business hours can reduce workplace productivity by up to 40 percent, as employees turn their minds from work to social interaction and play. Much worktime is lost to FaceTime, e-mailing and gossiping between family, friends, and co-workers, and playing on-line games. And at its worst, the internet can aid in workplace bullying and harassment as colleagues tend to reach out to each other secretly via the Internet, rather than publicly by the water-cooler. These are all examples of how I have seen technology abused in the workplace.

However, used properly, a workplace cannot survive without technology. If I were in charge, I would disable games and certain social media from being used at work. I would have a technology policy in place that all employees would read and sign, and I would monitor the usage. Everyone needs a work break, but loosing 40 percent of your workplace productivity can certainly cause a company to go “belly-up”.

discussions responds 1

I have to respond to 2 discussion, each respond should be a long paragraph.

this is the first discussion.

I have now found a category that I fit into. Sustainability is something that I have preached to my children since they can remember. This was also seared into my brain as a child from my parents. We have an obligation to make sure that our children’s children and their children have a place to call home, free of pollution and abundant with food and water.

Water scarcity is a real-life problem right now in today’s times. One example of many would be Californias Central Valley water shortage.

“California’s Central Valley is one of the world’s most productive agricultural regions. Its high-value fruit, vegetable, and nut crops rely on surface water imports from a vast network of reservoirs and canals as well as groundwater, which has been substantially overdrafted to support irrigation. The region has undergone a shift to perennial (tree and vine) crops in recent decades, which has increased water demand amid a series of severe droughts and emerging regulations on groundwater pumping.” (Mall & Herman, 2019)

In this case, I believe that we need to find an alternate way of watering these plants. One way that I can think of would be the desalination of ocean water. There are three different methods of doing this: Thermal, Electrical, and Pressure. While all three of these methods work great for desalination, they still require energy to work. For example, Electrical desalination requires around 7 to 30 kW-h of energy per 1000 gallons of desalinated water. (Parise, 2019) While this would be great for conserving groundwater, this would be a tremendous strain on the energy sector. It would require a considerable amount of energy to do this and also use up a lot of gasoline. 1 gallon of gasoline holds about 33 kW-h which means it would take a little over 1 gallon of gas to desalinate 1,000 gallons of water. So you have to measure what is worse, the water shortage or the damage that fossil fules have on our planet. This is a perfect example of sustainable ethics. More research will need to be done in order to come up with a more sustainable way to desalinate water.

this is the second discussion.

We have finally reached the point when discussing different viewpoints concerning environmental ethics that we have found a thought process that might work well. Sustainability concerns itself with living and non living things and implores humans to consider their actions when utilizing a resource. The concept is simple, be careful and mindful of what you use because the resources we have are finite. One of the major pros of this viewpoint is that sustainability is concerned with the future of the planet and all species. In order to foster a sustainable and healthy planet moving forward, it is imperative that we care for all human and non human creatures as they all hold intergral places in their respective ecosystems.

Water is the bulding block of life and without it, the human race and the planet as a whole would perish. Water is another relatively finite resource that needs to be cared for and protected. It is not possible to really limit water consumption at the individual level as it is a basic human need for survival. However, on the individual level, people can be mindful of the water that they do use and ensure not to waste what they dont need. As far as the bigger picture, we need to protect the major natural resources of fresh water. As the worlds population continues to increase, the demand for water will rise. It might be a decent solution to look into desalination as a possible way of creating more fresh water. Whatever the solution is, this is a no fail mission. If there was a water shortage, the ramifications could be catastrophic.

Final Quiz (5% of semester grade)

Instructions: There are three (3) topic areas listed below that are designed to measure your knowledge level specific to your understanding and ability to analyze the professional, ethical, legal, security and social issues in the global field of computing. You must respond to all three questions by providing appropriate responses in essay form. The references for this assignment must be newer (less than 2 years old) than for the other assignments. In most cases the topic area has several components. Each must be addressed to properly satisfy requirements.

State-wide and in most professional industries, there has been a mandate that college students be more proficient in their writing. While this is not a writing class, all writing assignments will be graded for grammar, syntax and typographical correctness to help address this mandate.

Pay attention to what you are being asked to do (see Grading Rubric below). For example, to describe does not mean to list, but to tell about or illustrate in more than two or three sentences, providing appropriate arguments for your responses using theories discussed in our text. Be sure to address all parts of the topic question as most have multiple parts. A verifiable current event (less than 2 years old) relevant to each of the topics is a fundamental component of your quiz as well. You must have at least one reference for eachtopic and you cannot use the same reference to satisfy this requirement. You cannot use information from the text book or any book/article by the author of the text book as a current event. Make sure that your reference has a date of publication. References with no date (n.d.) are not acceptable. Each question requires a reference citation in the text of your answer and a reference at the end of the question to which the reference applies. You must include some information obtained from the reference in your answer. The references must be found on the internet and you must include a URL in your reference so that the reference can be verified.

You should type your responses directly under the appropriate question. Be sure to include your name on the quiz. Include your name in the document filename. Your completed quiz must be placed in the appropriate eCollege Dropbox, no later than 11:59pm on the due date. Do well.

3. The field of computer science has changed during your lifetime and will continue to change in the future. When the Computer Science department at this University was created in 1974 students were using keypunch cards to run programs on the main frame. There was no PC, no cell phone, no phone aps, no internet, no Facebook, no Twitter, no Google, no Microsoft, etc. The field of computer science has changed dramatically from then till now. Over your entire life the changes could be as dramatic as it has been since the CS Department was created.
