Assignment 3: Parenting Practices Over Generations

You learned in your readings that parenting practices and techniques used to shape child development are influenced by many factors including culture, socioeconomic status, non-normative life events, and cohort effects. To understand cohort effects, consider that the experiences of a child growing up in the 1940s are different in many ways from a child growing up today.

Read the article: Kotchick, B.A. & Forehand, R. (2002). Putting parenting in perspective: A discussion of the contextual factors that shape parenting practices. Journal of Child and Family Studies, 11(3), 255-269.

http://www.thecampuscommon.com/library/ezproxy/ticketdemocs.asp?sch=auo&turl=http://search.proquest.com/docview/210500919

Synthesize what you learned in your readings as well as the above article to address the following: Using the chart/table below, list at least 4 parenting practices of 3 generations. (Note: Parenting practices are not the same as parenting styles, which will be discussed later in the course). You can describe parenting practices of 3 generations of your family members, another family you interview, or general practices of generations based on research you find. For example, how did each generation address issues such as education, extracurricular activities, breastfeeding, sleeping arrangements, religious involvement, etc.?  Include brief demographic information (e.g., sex, age, region of the country) Note: 3 different generations means 3 different time periods, not 3 different people. Now review the chart/table and discuss the following: How were the parenting practices similar and different between generations? Explain the concept of cohort effects. What cohort effects (e.g. historical or social events) might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described? Identify and explain contextual factors (other than cohort effects) described by Kotchick and Forehand (2002) that might have influenced the parenting practices of each generation you described. Why is it important to understand contextual factors, including cohort effects, when researching differences in parenting practices?

ATTACHED IS THE CHART MENTIONED ABOVE

Present the chart or table and your comments in a 3-page paper in Word format. Be sure to include introductory and concluding paragraphs in your paper, and an APA style reference page. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M1_A3.doc. For example, if your name is John Smith, your document name should be SmithJ_M1_A3.doc.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

LITERATURE REVIEW PAPER

Based on your review of the most recent, relevant  research findings on your chosen topic which the views of CAUSATION IN CRIMINAL LAWS, submit a final version of your  literature review paper, integrating feedback received from your  instructor. Be sure to include a research/focal question, synthesis of  the literature you reviewed, well-established conclusions, and points of  discussion and/or future research.

Begin the review by defining the objective of the paper. Introduce  the reader to your focal question. What is this question intended to  address? You may state your “question” in the form of a problem if you  like. Describe the topic for your literature review and why you chose  this topic. Explain why you think it is important. It is also useful to  tell the reader how the review is organized in your introduction  section, before you transition into the body of the review. Organize your literature review paper by themes/theories/concepts,  rather than article by article. If there is one major theme you want to  highlight, state the theme. If there are three major themes or streams  of thought on the topic, briefly name them—and then organize the balance  of your literature review around those three streams. Think of themes,  theories, concepts, lines of thought, and ideas as organizing strategies  for your literature review. Your creativity in this assignment is not  the content or findings but the clarity with which you organize the  review and create a context for understanding the focal question. When you are done introducing the first line of thought, create a  new paragraph to discuss studies which present another line of thought  or opposing view. Your literature review should hit the high points of each article.  You should not discuss a single article, one by one, like a grocery  list. Zero in on the main theme or finding and then move on to the next  theme. Remember, this is a synthesis, an integration of all the things  you have learned. You are creating a discussion on paper, which in turn  gives the reader a context for understanding where the scholarship has  been, where it is currently, and where it likely will be heading next.  Provide enough details to help the reader understand the significance of  the studies you cite without “rebuilding Rome.” Be sure to evaluate the  studies and offer critical comments on any shortcomings you’ve observed  or that have been reported by the authors. Discuss the main findings and their implications. Given the results  of your literature review, what is/are the prevailing argument(s)? What  research question could you ask in order to further develop this area of  study and contribute to the existing body of knowledge? Complete your  review by drawing conclusions about your body of research and  identifying gaps in the research which still remain to be explored,  maybe even by you! Make an argument as to why your research question is  important and relevant to the current work being done on your topic.

Requirements

Apply current APA standards for editorial style,  expression of ideas, and formatting of the text, headings, citations,  and references. Remember to use your own words to describe and evaluate  the articles. Avoid quoting the material and also cite works when you  are discussing someone else’s ideas. Be sure to integrate any and all  feedback received from your instructor. Your paper should be  double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with normal one-inch  margins, written in APA style, and free of typographical and  grammatical errors. It should include a title page with a running head,  an abstract, and a reference page. The body of the paper should be no  less than 5–6 pages in length.

Assessment and Diagnosis “Under the Gun”

Assessment and Diagnosis “Under the Gun”

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review Standard 9: Assessment  (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. in the APA’s Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct and DSM-5.

It is recommended that you read Chapters 4, 7, and 10 in the Sommers-Flanagan and Sommers-Flanagan (2013) e-book, Clinical Interviewing, as well as the Kielbasa, Pomerantz, Krohn, and Sullivan (2004) “How Does Clients’ Method of Payment Influence Psychologists’ Diagnostic Decisions?” and the Pomerantz and Segrist (2006) “The Influence of Payment Method on Psychologists’ Diagnostic Decisions Regarding Minimally Impaired Clients” articles for further information about how payment method influences the assessment and diagnosis process.

For this discussion, you will assume the role of a clinical or counseling psychologist and diagnose a hypothetical client.

Begin by reviewing the PSY650 Week Two Case Studies document and select one of the clients to diagnose.

                                                 PSY650 Week Two Case Studies

You are a psychologist working for an agency whose policy states that an assessment and diagnosis must be rendered within 48 hours of an initial session with a client. Please review and choose one of the following cases to diagnose.

                                                               The Case of Charles

Charles is a 33-year-old African American male seeking treatment due to suicidal ideation. He is currently going through divorce proceedings and reports feeling agitated, angry, sad, and stressed most days. He is concerned that his relationship issues have begun to impact his responsibilities at work and fears losing his job. Charles is open to seeking treatment, but his insurance provider is out-of-network. His insurance company is willing to reimburse him for up to 8 sessions if an acceptable diagnosis is submitted. What diagnosis would you give Charles?

In your initial post, compare the assessments typically used by clinical and counseling psychologists, and explain which assessment techniques (e.g., tests, surveys, interviews, client records, observational data) you might use to aid in your diagnosis of your selected client. Describe any additional information you would need to help formulate your diagnosis, and propose specific questions you might ask the client in order to obtain this information from him or her. Identify which theoretical orientation you would use with this client and explain how this orientation might influence the assessment and/or diagnostic process. Using the DSM-5 manual, propose a diagnosis for the client in the chosen case study.

Analyze the case and your agency’s required timeline for diagnosing from an ethical perspective. Considering the amount of information you currently have for your client, explain whether or not it is ethical to render a diagnosis within the required timeframe. Evaluate the case and describe whether or not it is justifiable in this situation to render a diagnosis in order to obtain a third party payment.

Case Analysis – Integrating Theoretical Orientations

Case Analysis – Integrating Theoretical Orientations

Prior to beginning this assignment, read the PSY650 Week Two Treatment Plan , Case 16: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Gorenstein and Comer (2014), and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders in Hamblin and Gross (2012).

Assess the evidence-based practices implemented in this case study by addressing the following issues:

· Explain the connection between each theoretical orientation used by Dr. Remoc and the four interventions utilized in the case.

· Consider Dr. Remoc’s utilization of two theoretical frameworks to guide her treatment plan.  Assess the efficacy of integrating two orientations based on the information presented in the case study. Describe some potential problems with prescribing medication as the only treatment option for children with ADHD.

· Identify tasks and positive reinforcements that might be included in Billy’s token economy chart given the behavior issues described in the case. (There are articles in the recommended resources that may assist you in this portion of the assignment.)

· Evaluate the effectiveness of the four treatment interventions implemented by Dr. Remoc and support your statements with information from the case and two to three peer-reviewed articles from the Ashford University Library.

· Recommend three additional treatment interventions that would be appropriate in this case. Use information from the Hamblin and Gross “Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorders” chapter to help support your recommendations. Justify your selections with information from the case.
