Week 1 Discussion 1

Discussion 1: Are Individuals Powerless to Change?

Consider the following perspectives offered in two popular films:

“Our lives and our choices, like quantum trajectories, are understood moment-to-moment. At each point of intersection, each encounter, suggests a new potential direction” (Arndt, Tykwer, Wachowski, & Wachowski, 2012).

“You can’t interfere with destiny, that’s why it’s destiny. If you try to interfere, the same thing is going to happen anyway and you’ll just suffer” (Berger & Payne, 1999).

Legends, fairy tales, books, and movies have long since illustrated the debate between destiny and choice. When it comes to a person’s ability to change, which do you believe: Are individuals predestined to endure their inborn challenges, or can they choose to rise above their tribulations? Is a wealthy son meant to follow in the steps of his father, or can he forge his own path? Can those suffering from addiction overcome their weaknesses, or are they powerless to their vices?

For this Discussion, review this week’s Learning Resources. Reflect on people in your own life, as well as those you may have worked with, read about, or seen on TV or through media. Identify whether you perceive change to be possible. Then, consider how your personal perception might impact your work as a counselor. For example, if you perceive individuals to be incapable of change, how might this influence the counseling strategies and approaches you employ with clients?

Post by Day 3 your perspective on whether people are powerless to change, including why or why not. Explain how your perspective might influence your future work as a counselor. Justify your response with references to this week’s Learning Resources and the current literature. Be specific and use examples from your personal experience as appropriate.

Discussion 2: Conceptualizing Through the Lens of Development

How might the decisions of parents impact a child’s future? Furthermore, how might a child’s environment help to shape his or her identity?

It is no secret that parents play a large role in a child’s development. In fact, the contributions, actions, and involvement of parents throughout the lifespan are factors that most developmental theories highlight. Another aspect, the experiences with and influences of a child’s environment, is present in many theories as well.

For this Discussion, review the case study at the end of Chapter 1 of The Life Span and this week’s media, “Perspectives: Using Lifespan Development.” Then, select one of the two Discussions below and consider how parents and environments can shape a child’s development.

Discussion A

Post By Day 4 an explanation of the outcomes that you predict for the client and family depicted in the case study. Include why you made these predictions. Describe relevant issues of continuity and change that apply to this case by citing specific references to two of the developmental theories presented in this week’s Learning Resources.

Discussion B

Post by Day 4 an explanation of at least two environmental modifications that might promote positive outcomes for the client and family depicted in the case study. Explain why these modifications might be effective. Be specific about each family member, and cite specific references to this week’s Learning Resources and the current literature.

Journal Assignment: Impact of Life Experiences on Development

Review the Final Project Guidelines (located in this week’s Learning Resources). Think about your tentative timeline and which six life events you might select to include in the project. In what way were these events significant to you? How did they affect your development? As you move forward in the course, you will use theory to better understand the impacts of these events and how they helped shape your identity.

In 1–2 paragraphs, briefly share your initial reflections about the influences these events had on your identity development.

You will create a workshop proposal to educate your community on adopting healthy food choices and applying them to everyday life.

You will begin with a short introduction (approximately 300 words) on the background of nutrition and behavior relationship and the reasons for this workshop. You will end the proposal with a short summary of future recommendations for lifestyle change. Be sure to note whether the research you have used as resources in your workshop has followed ethical procedures in methods and especially in the choice of a diverse population of participants. It is very important for gaining confidence of your attendees.

Generally, a workshop is a single educational program of variable duration (could be from 45 minutes to two days) designed to teach or introduce a particular practical skills, techniques, or ideas which the attendees can use in their work or their daily lives. Since workshops allow for some personal attention, they are usually small (6 to 20 participants) and are presented for a group that has something in common. In your case, it will be your community.

Please use the resources available for this week to help you in creating a successful workshop.

Your references should include at least 10 articles pertaining to the population of your choice. Up to five of these references can be from scholarly Internet sources, including government and educational websites. The remainder of the resources should be articles published in peer-reviewed journals within the past five years. In addition to these specified resources, other appropriate scholarly resources, including older articles may be included. Be sure to think about what myths and misinformation your workshop attendees might have, and incorporate material to address those with accurate information and recommendations.

Length: 10-12 pages not including title and reference pages.

Your proposal should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards.
