Assignment     400-600 words

You are on vacation in New York and ready to explore the downtown area. In the morning, you are walking down a very busy street and you see a man lying on the ground, shaking. Do you stop, or do you continue to walk by? You continue to walk down the street, and as you pass by an alley, you see a man and woman yelling loudly at each other. The man calls the woman a name and pushes her hard against a brick wall.

Would you try to help the person in either of these situations? Why or why not?

I would try to help in both situations. My reasoning is that I am naturally a protective and caring person, which is why I joined the military and was a volunteer firefighter for 3 years.

Would you be more likely to stop and help the people in the two situations if you saw other people helping? Why or why not?

Depending on the type of people that were stopping to help  I would more then likely stop. If there were emergency services personal stopping to assist then I would continue on my way. If the people already stopping did not look like they knew what they were doing then I would stop and offer my assistance.

What are some of the reasons why a bystander may not help out in these two situations?

Relate this back to the bystander effect. Is there anything that the woman in the second situation could do that would make a bystander more likely to help her? Explain.

Include at least 3 sources in your paper. Use in-text citations and a reference list according to APA style guidelines.

Assignment

Primary Task Response: Within the Discussion Board area, write 300-500 words that respond to the following questions with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. This will be the foundation for future discussions with your classmates. Be substantive and clear, and use examples to reinforce your ideas.

In this assignment, you will investigate concepts such as conformity, compliance, and obedience. Each of you has probably seen a story on the news about someone joining a cult, group, or gang. As you watched the news story, you may wonder why that person would conform to the strict requests made by the group, cult, or gang. For example, a cult in 1997 called Heaven Gate convinced all 39 members to commit suicide. A group called the Moonies (Unification Church) would convince its members to cut contact with anyone outside of the group (family and friends) and donate all of their money to the church. Why would anyone willingly join one of these groups?

Discuss the following in your paper:  Research a group, gang, or cult that you believe uses conformity, compliance, or obedience to have people join and stay in that particular gang. In your own words give a summary of the group, gang, or cults mission.

What does that group outwardly say to recruit someone into the group, gang, or cult?

Discuss how the group uses social influence such as conformity, compliance, and obedience to keep members in the group, gang, or cult.

Why would someone stay in one of these groups, gangs, or cults?

If someone in the group, gang, or cult wanted to leave, would it be an easy transition?

What may prevent him or her from leaving?

Intro to Rehabilitation Counseling FInal

FINAL EXAM FOR MY INTRO TO REHAB COUNSELING COURSE. I NEED IT BACK NO LATER THAN MONDAY 6PM EST.

FINAL EXAMINATION

EDRC 531 INTRODUCTION TO REHABILITATION COUNSELING

Joan is a 38 year old African American woman who underwent carpal tunnel surgery six weeks ago and has just been released to return to work this week. You are a Rehabilitation Counselor/Case Manager/Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist that works for a nationally known private-for-profit case management/rehabilitation insurance company. Your company has been contacted by Joan’s current employer, Marcus Machinery, to assist in facilitating Joan’s rehabilitation plan and her return to work.

Joan has a high school education with one year vocational technical training as a medical secretary. Before she came to work for Marcus Machinery, she worked as a waitress at Shoney’s for one year.  She quit this job complaining of the pay, hours, and having to walk/stand all day. After working as a waitress, she worked at Wal-mart for almost three years as a stock clerk. She quit this job reporting that she was lifting/carrying too much weight, standing/walking too frequently, and did not like the odd hours she had to work. Joan also indicated that the physical demands of this job was “too painful” on her shoulders, arms, and back”. After these two jobs, she attended vocational technical training as a medical secretary then worked in this occupation for about five years. She quit this occupation stating that “working the key board and looking at the computer screen was too much of a stress on her finger/wrist joints and eyes. She also stated that she hated working for medical doctors because they were very demanding.

Joan’s parents are deceased and she has no other relatives. She was a foster child that was in the system for 10 years. She was raised by several families and does not communicate with any of the families that helped to raise her over the years. Joan reports being married and divorced twice within the last ten years. She indicates that she divorced her past husbands because they drank heavily and physically abused her. Joan is a single parent with one 13 year old son from her second marriage. Her son Ian was diagnosed with Mental Retardation, a severe learning disability, and Attention Deficit Disorder. She states that her relationship with her son is fair, but she experiences feelings of guilt regarding his disability. She reports feeling very depressed and isolated with her current situation. She has very little social or family support. Joan also expresses a lot of anxiety because of her back surgery, the pain associated with it, and the fact that she still must work so she can financially support her son along with her other debts (e.g., mortgage, car payment).

Joan has worked the last nine years for Marcus Machinery as a coating machine operator. Her job is to coat sheets of thin metal and then visually inspect each piece as it comes off the coating machine. Approximately two times per hour, she pulls a lever that drops the stack of coated metal on a pallet. Using a hydraulic hand dolly, Joan moves this stack of metal sheets to an area 25 feet away from her machine so that another employee can take this material to the warehouse. Joan then returns the empty pallet to her coating machine and begins this process again.

After Joan’s surgery and her return to work, she expresses concerns to her supervisor about using the hand dolly. Basically, she tells her supervisor that her doctor recommended that she avoid this particular task for the next two weeks. The supervisor agrees to assign this task to another employee for the next two weeks. Near the end of this time, Joan states that she refuses to use the hand dolly because she is afraid that she might re-injure her hand and may even cause injury to her other hand. Her physician states that he believes there is no physical reason why she cannot return to using the hand dolly again. It is apparent to you, the Rehabilitation Counselor, that Joan has a strong emotional reaction and increased anxiety about using the hand dolly.

Non-experimental Methods

A minimum of 350 words required.

Frame your responses in the terms of the research proposal that you are developing. If you are unable to fit these topics to your particular design, you can explain why it would not work for your research (perhaps it would violate the ethics code). Illustrations of why something will not work can be as valuable as illustrations of why they will.

Topic: Non-experimental Methods

Select one of the non-experimental methods that you read about this week (naturalistic observation, ethnography, case history, sociometry, archival study, survey, and correlational research), and describe how you might use this method to study your hypothetical research question (the one being used for your research proposal). References must include at least one from  Bordens, K. & Abbott, B. (2013). Research Design and Methods: A Process Approach (9th ed.). Franklin Park, IL: McGraw-Hill.

1. Why did you select this particular method for your research study?

2. What do you like and dislike about this method?

3. What differentiates this non-experimental method from a true experiment?

Utility of the Functional Behavioral Assessment

In a minimum of 350 words.

1. Discuss in detail why the choice of a Functional Behavioral Assessment approach that utilizes principles of Behavior Analysis should be considered superior to previous iterations of assessment for problem behaviors. In your discussion, be sure to include reference to at least two of the following “old school” methods of behavior assessment: the diagnostic model, topography based, case based, or team preference based approaches.

2. Discuss some specifics related to research, empirical background, and legal issues that would justify the choice of a Functional Behavioral Assessment as a primary method for behavior assessment. Include reference to at least two specific research or study examples from Chapter 2 to back up your response.

Include At least one reference from : Steege, M. W. (2009). Conducting School-Based Functional Behavioral Assessments, Second Edition, 2nd Edition.
