Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read the required chapters from the text and review the required articles for this week. Humans have engaged in psychoactive drug use, sometimes in formal (ceremonial) settings and sometimes recreationally, since before recorded history. It has only been in the last century or so that abuse and addiction have become large-scale problems. Using the literature and your own insights into these issues, formulate an argument as to why the problem has reached its current scale.  In your discussion, evaluate the employment of psychoactive drugs from the aspects of a risk-benefits analysis and ethical considerations such as the risk of addiction versus the cost of punitive action. Also explain purely pharmacological issues such as pharmacokinetics and routes of drug administration and dose. If needed, include factors such as supply, cultural attitudes to drug use, and the context of drug use.

This site offers free ringtones that most adults cannot hear.  The website includes a chart of ringtones that start at 8kHz (everyone should be able to hear) and go up to 22kHz (only those below age 20 can hear).  Starting with the 8kHz frequency, download* each ringtone one at a time and keep a list of which you can hear and make a note when you are no longer able to hear the ringtone. 

*There are four options for downloading the ringtones, depending on what type of device you are using.  Most students on a computer, laptop or Android device will click the green download button (MP3). Students using iPhones will click the blue/grey button (M4R format) and students using Windows phones will click on the red/orange button (WAV format).  There is no need to save the ringtones.

Step 2:

Harvey is married and has 2 teenage children. Harvey has been heavily drinking on a regular basis for the past 10 years.  In the past his wife often covered for him with his job, and usually made excuses for him with his children and his friends. Harvey has not attended his son’s baseball games this year, and he missed his daughter’s performance in the school play due to having been passed out from drinking. At this time, he is at risk for losing his job due to excessive absences, and he was recently arrested for a DUI. Harvey has realized that his drinking is adversely affecting all aspects of his life and he is ready to quit.

Directions:

Create an 8-10 slide Power Point presentation to discuss treatment plans for Harvey and his family. Use the speaker notes in the slide show to further discuss the topics on each slide. In addition make sure you have a title slide and a slide with references (in APA format).  Please reference at least two peer-reviewed journal articles in your presentation along with appropriate information from the assigned weekly readings.
