Implications of Forensic Assessments

It is important to have an awareness of why a psychologist chooses certain tests to include in an assessment battery. It is also important to understand how a forensic psychological risk assessment is conducted differently from other types of psychological clinical assessments. Understanding these differences sets the stage for much of your learning in the weeks to come.

In this Discussion, you will review the Learning Resources and apply your knowledge to the case.

To prepare

Review the case study provided in Chapter 5 of the course text. Review the Learning Resources. Consider the following questions: What did the psychologist consider when he chose the specific test instruments? Why did the psychologist utilize the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI)? Since the counsel on the case did not request a risk assessment, why did the forensic psychologist choose to utilize the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) along with the Psychopathic Personality Inventory-Revised (PPI-R) and the Static-99? Why is it important that a forensic psychology practitioner, who does not administer test instruments, have an understanding of these test instruments in his or her work?

Post a response to the following, based on the case study: Provide a brief summary of the case. Explain what role the forensic psychology professional played in selecting the forensic risk assessment instrument used in the case. Explain characteristics of the assessment that make it effective for this case. Explain the implications regarding the selection of the assessment instrument and its impact on the outcome of the case.

Support your responses with evidence from the Learning Resources.

Assignment 2: Analyzing Theories of Crime

You are an investigative reporter for a large news network. You are working on a news piece identifying how theories of crime explain specific crimes including the demographics of perpetrators and victims. You are required to make a thirty-minute presentation to your producers to convince them to run your story.

Choose a specific crime from the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program at the following: US Department of Justice, The Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2009). 2008 Crime in the United States: About crime in the U.S. Retrieved from
http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2008

Research this crime using your textbook, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet. Be sure to include the UCR and other crime reports in your research

Based on your research, develop a presentation that addresses the following: Define the crime. Include both the legal definition and others as necessary. Summarize demographics of the crime for both the perpetrators and the victim. Be sure to cover the following: Gender Ethnicity Socioeconomic characteristics Other relevant diversity issues Choose two theories of the causes of crime that have been discussed and analyzed so far in the course; apply those theories to the selected crime. Be sure to cover the following: Explain the type of each theory in detail. Discuss the development of each theory and the main theorists associated with them. Compare and contrast the two theories of crime selected. Discuss the ways in which they fit with the crime and the specific demographics associated with the crime. Based on your research, develop your own hypothesis of the cause of this crime. Using the theories that you have chosen, you can develop your own “combination” theory. Give valid reasons and scholarly, peer-reviewed sources in support of your theory.

You are allowed to present your theory in first person; however, be careful not to abuse this privilege.

Your presentation should include the following: A title slide and a reference slide (these will not count towards the total number of slides). At least five sentences of speaker notes for each section to clarify anything not included in the slides. (As this is a presentation the slides should cover the main points and the details should be covered in the speaker’s notes.) The speaker notes should be properly referenced.

Develop a 10–15-slide presentation in PowerPoint format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M3_A2.ppt.

By the due date assigned, deliver your assignment to the Submissions Area.

Defining Normal and Abnormal

At this stage in your study of human psychology, you might be wondering, “I can often recognize what I consider to be abnormal behavior, so why is it so difficult to define?” As you found in this week’s assigned reading, some of the issues involved in distinguishing abnormal from normal behavior are complex and fraught with controversy. Additionally, the definition of abnormal behavior can change with time.

To prepare: Review the definitions of abnormal and abnormality in Chapter 1 of your text. Analyze how the definitions align, overlap, or differ. Reflect on how these statements or others might have changed your ideas of what constitutes abnormal behavior.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 3 a comparison of normal and abnormal behavior, drawing from your original definition of abnormal behavior and from the definitions put forth in the Learning Resources. Include any challenges you might see in using these definitions to guide the assessment of your clients.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references from the Learning Resources

Identifying Theoretical Perspectives

Considering concepts and phenomena from different theoretical perspectives can broaden your understanding. In this Discussion, you will consider maladaptive behaviors from several different theoretical perspectives or viewpoints.

To prepare: Review this week’s Learning Resources. Focus on the causal factors and viewpoints in Chapter 3 of Abnormal Psychology. Be sure to read the examples for each of the different causal viewpoints and factors. Think about the effect of taking different viewpoints on diagnosis and assessment. Choose one psychological disorder and put the name of the disorder in the subject line of your post.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a description of one psychological disorder and explain the disorder from two or more causal viewpoints.

Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references from the Learning Resources.

M3 Assignment 2: Required Assignment 1: Course Project Task III (200 points)

Topic of choice is Juvenile Offenders

When Should Mixed Methods Be Used?

When Should Mixed Methods Be Used?

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 1 and 2 of the Hesse-Biber e-book, Mixed Methods Research: Merging Theory with Practice, and the two required articles for this week. Mixed methods is a current popular methodology. While this type of methodology is useful for some studies, because of its dual nature as both quantitative and qualitative, it is not effective or appropriate for all research.

For this discussion, you will consider the use of mixed methods for the topic you have chosen for your Research Proposal. In your initial post, apply the scientific method to your research topic by defining your research question and determining the method(s) necessary to answer that question. Compare the characteristics and appropriate uses of the different methods and explain if your research question could best be answered through qualitative or quantitative methods, or a mix of both. Identify the dominant method (quantitative or qualitative) for your proposed study. Explain whether or not a mixed methods approach is the best way to study the topic, demonstrating that the second method is not added as an afterthought or merely to impress journal editors who favor mixed methods. If you have decided not to use mixed methods, explain why the study is best completed with either a quantitative or qualitative focus. Justify your design choice and support your position with scholarly sources. Include a discussion explaining how you would apply ethical principles to your design to address concerns which may impact your research.

Assignment 2: RA 1: Presentation—Establishing a Performance Management Strategy

Hide Submission Folder InformationSubmission FolderM3 Assignment 2 Submission RA 1Instructions Assignment 2: RA 1: Presentation—Establishing a Performance Management Strategy

As industrial/organizational (I/O) practitioners, we address organizational problems. Companies often assess employee performance or track it to some extent, but such activities are not always part of a strong performance management plan. Without such a plan, managers are frequently unprepared to manage employee performance. As such, it is our responsibility to educate and subsequently put into practice quality standards and procedures to address organizational issues.

BANKS Industries is satisfied with your work and has asked you to assist it in an expanded project. The company is looking at methods of tracking employee performance. For this assignment, you will present the idea of a performance management system to BANKS Industries and begin to make recommendations for future practices. Review the scenario and directions below regarding what you will include in your letter and presentation.

Scenario:

For the course project, you will take on the role of a consultant to evaluate this organization’s performance management system and make recommendations that will help the organization better manage employee performance. You recently received an e-mail from Mabel Banks, chief financial officer, outlining her concerns and requesting your assistance.

Click here to read the e-mail from Mabel Banks.

Directions:

Part A: Develop a letter for the organizational leaders. In 1–2 pages: Explain the importance of managing employee performance. On the basis of a review of company information, describe how your consulting services will assist the company in addressing its organizational problems. On the basis of research and theory, mention current organizational practices of performance management as well as apparent issues.

Write using a formal tone in consideration of your audience, the organizational leaders. The letter should follow formal business format standards. Business letter templates are available from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates. To cite the scholarly sources you use to present research and theory, use parenthetical citations in the body of the letter and then include your list of references on a page following the letter.

Part B: Presentation

You have been selected to assist the organization with its performance concerns. Create and narrate (using an audio component, such as a voiceover or a recording) a presentation to organizational stakeholders, addressing the following points in 10–15 minutes: Explain the link between organizational goals and strategic planning and the potential impact a performance management system may have on employee performance and attitude. Determine the organizational advantages of implementing a performance management system and the potential disadvantages to not implementing a performance management system for BANKS Industries. Compare and contrast the company’s current critical incident technique with the use of a graphic rating scale. Recommend guidelines for providing feedback to employees during the performance management process.

Your final product will be a 10- to 15-minute presentation (using Microsoft PowerPoint Show, Prezi, PowToon, or other presentation software and including audio). Utilize at least four scholarly sources in your research (including a 1- to 2-page letter in Microsoft Word). Your presentation should be written in a clear, concise, and organized manner; demonstrate ethical scholarship in accurate representation and attribution of sources in APA format; and display accurate spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

Deliverable 5 – Learning to Communicate Globally Through the Platform of Social Media

APA FORMAT/ Part 1 & 2 / emulate a social media page for a fake company/ DO ALL PARTS REQUESTED

When using social media, the communication barrier of distance is eliminated. This comes with obvious benefits, but it also comes with extra challenges due to the increased potential for misunderstandings with cultural differences and language barriers. The person that knows how to use communication opportunities will have a strong advantage in their work and in their networking and relationships.

This assignment has two parts to it.

Part 1:

Locate and study social media pages of businesses that are making an effort to market their product globally.  You can use any social media platform you choose. Examine what you believe the companies are doing well and what can be improved. Look for ways in which their communication are clear to a large number of people, breaking through language and cultural barriers. Also look for ways in which the pages could be improved due to the limitations and challenges of global communication.

After you have studied several pages that are seeking to reach a large number of people, choose three of them.

1A. Choose the page that you feel does the best job overall.

Describe why you feel like this social media page was the best one that you viewed. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

1B. Choose one that needs improvement.

Describe what you see that needs improvement in their effort to reach people globally. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

1C. Choose one that most closely represents the type of page that you might create in the future. If you have no interest or potential need for ever creating a social media page that is intended to reach the masses globally, then choose one that you are interested in and like.

Describe why you chose this social media page as the one that you can best relate to or like the best. Take a screenshot of the page and upload it with your submission.

Note: Do not use the same social media page for more than one of these three choices. For example, do not say that one social media page was the best and also the one that you would be most likely to create a similar page as.  In other words, do not use one social media page for both 1A and 1C. You need to choose three separate pages in total.

Part 2:

Now you will use what you have learned to create your own social media page with the intent of reaching the masses. You will not need to actually create a page on a social media platform. Creating a fake company or organization online could obviously cause problems. Instead, emulate the formatting of a social media page, and create it so that you can submit it to your instructor.

Take what you learned from Part 1 to create the best fake social media page you can on an imaginary company or organization of your choice. Your company or organization can be anything you want, just ensure that it is class-appropriate. Describe what you learned in this assignment and how you incorporated that knowledge into your social media page.
