When you meet someone new, your brain automatically uses schemas to identify characteristics or behavior that would allow you to classify the person into a group that you may already know. While this is an adaptive and helpful strategy that the human brain possesses, when taken to an extreme, it could lead to the formation of unhelpful or incorrect stereotypes about groups. Take a moment and consider what you already know about intersex, transgender, or other gender variant groups from personal experience, academic or professional work, or influences such as the media. Is your knowledge sufficient to bring sensitivity to work with members of gender variant populations?

In order to bring full sensitivity and awareness to bear on interacting with members of a particular group, humans must bring conscious thought to their perceptions, in addition to the automatic thinking that occurs. In other words, acknowledge commonalities related to gender variance, but also research information on groups, take the time to become aware of individual differences, and always seek to bring cultural sensitivity to your professional work.

For this Discussion, you will research a specific gender variant group of your choice and explain strategies that could be used to increase sensitivity toward members of the group. Remember that, just as biological and psychological diversity exists in other facets of human life (e.g., cognition, personality), so too does it exist in sexuality and gender.

To prepare

· Select a group such as intersex, transgender, genderqueer, or a third gender with which you are not familiar (or the one you know the least about) and search for interviews, personal narratives, blogs, or any other form of information related to this specific population.

By Day 3

Post a description of the group or population you selected. Describe how your impressions, feelings or perspectives changed about this group as you researched the group. Looking forward, what strategies would you use to continue to raise your awareness and sensitivity toward this group?

For this discussion, you will be focusing on your self-development and your learning experiences in the context of the workplace. In your initial post, apply basic research methods and the alignment of content within research to the questions below by making connections between your personal experiences and the content from the readings. You might also utilize other peer-reviewed articles of interest to you to support your assertions and conclusions. Analyze how your personal development in the learning and cognition domains have matured and developed through your formative years and work experiences. Your writing should not simply answer each question; a fully developed personal analysis of your own growth and learning processes should be concise and well organized in a manner that exhibits your improved writing ability and reflects APA style format.

In addition to answering the questions below, include an introduction and conclusion to your post. What types of training and education have you received in the workplace? What do you do now that differs from your past educational learning experiences? How have your life experiences affected your learning? Have events in your life influenced your beliefs and how you assert yourself in the learning process? How do you see yourself as a life-long learner?

Prepare an essay of 750 Determine why studies indicate there is a higher level of mental illness in female offenders, including what factors are most significant in the higher rates of mental illness. Describe treatment plans that exist for a female offender that may be uniquely suited to the female incarceration experience. Discuss how a psychologist or other mental health professionals can foster positive mother/child relationships when a mother is incarcerated. Identify appropriate methods for reintegrating female offenders, including how female offenders can be prepared for reintegration with their families and work life.

Create a 12 pages hypothetical dialogue that occurs during an initial session with a client. In the dialogue, demonstrate the basic counseling skills of empathy, reflective listening, and summarizing. Also, demonstrate your ability to create a good therapeutic relationship through appropriate goal setting and treatment planning in collaboration with your client. After the dialogue, in 4–6 additional pages, justify the way you conducted the session with references to at least ten peer-reviewed articles or book chapters.
