Initial Assessment

For this discussion, the patient for whom you wrote your transcript in the Week One Initial Call discussion has come to your office for a 15-minute initial assessment. As part of the intake process, you have asked the patient to fill out a biographical form that contains the same information included in the case study. Based on this information, propose three questions you would ask the patient to determine a diagnosis and treatment plan.

Provide a transcript of this brief initial session including your three questions and the answers you would expect the prospective patient to give. Beneath the transcript, provide a rationale for each of the three questions you proposed. Include the case study title you chose for your Week One Initial Call discussion post.

Guided Response: Review several of your colleagues’ posts, and respond to at least two of your peers by 11:59 p.m. on Day 7 of the week. You are encouraged to post your required replies earlier in the week to promote more meaningful interactive discourse in this discussion.

Examine your colleague’s transcript, and write an evaluation of the prospective patient’s apparent symptoms and presenting problem(s) within the context of a theoretical orientation. Theoretical orientations are based on the personality theories you learned about in PSY615, and are referred to as “approaches” in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology: An Introductory Textbook.

Remember that symptoms may not be explicitly mentioned by the patient, but they may be inferred by the patient’s presenting problem(s). Summarize views of these symptoms from at least two historical perspectives. For instance, how have these symptoms have been conceptualized and understood, historically? Finally, suggest diagnostic manuals and handbooks besides the DSM-5 that might be used to assess this patient.

Week 6

Read “Topic 6: Vargas Family Case Study.” Develop three experiential interventions that you would use with the Vargas family.

It’s time to get creative! You have noticed that the Vargas family struggles with emotional expression, particularly with congruent emotional expression (i.e., words, actions, and body language being congruent). Using the Experiential Interventions Template, create three unique experiential interventions that you would use with the family and describe how they would be helpful to the family. It may be helpful to refer to the library articles for ideas and inspiration, but do not copy existing interventions. Be sure to fully address each section in the template for each of the three interventions in your paper:  Title of your Intervention General Goals Materials Needed Advance Preparation Needed Description of the Intervention with the Vargas family Discussion of the Benefits of the Intervention to the Vargas Family References (if any)

Topic: Ethical Issues When Counseling Different Ethnic Populations

Read, analyze, and critique the code of ethics found in the Reading & Study folder.

Then, follow these instructions:

Listed below is a situation that may or may not violate codes of ethics when working with families. Study the scenario carefully and then go to the codes of ethics for AAMFT, IAMFC, AACC, and ACA to find the ethical answers to the dilemmas presented. Be sure to record the code location on each ethical code where the violation or permission is given for the counselor to do what had been done (ex: AAMFT 2.2 or ACA B.7.2).

Having worked with over a hundred clients struggling with anxiety, you feel she needs to set clear boundaries for her family members. You instruct her to exercise more independence from her family and seek to become self-actualized.

As a competent Christian counselor, you also give her Mark 10:6–9 and Luke 14:26–27 and ask her to study them this week to see how individuals must distance themselves and become self-differentiated.

Assignment: Final Project and Culture

Cultural backgrounds can greatly impact people who are in need of human services. In some cultures, for example, illness is seen as a sign of weakness, which sometimes leads to delayed medical or social assistance. This is just one of the countless ways that culture impacts human services, and as a future professional, it is important that you gain insights into how culture might impact your particular area of interest. For this Assignment, use the Walden Library databases to locate and select one peer-reviewed article that relates to culture in human services. Consider how culture might impact the program or area of practice you plan to focus on for the Final Project.

To complete this Assignment:

By Day 7

Write a 2- to 3- page paper that addresses the following:

· Identify the particular program or area of practice that you selected for the Final Project.

· Identify and describe the peer-reviewed article you selected from the Walden Library.

· Explain how culture and the article you selected are relevant to the program or area of practice that you identified.

Note: After reviewing your assignment this week, your instructor will offer suggestions, feedback, and final approval of your topic and article(s).

Reminder: Proper formatting and APA citations are required. Refer to the Writing Template for Course Papers for additional guidance.
