Discussion post due 12-20-17 by noon

Throughout the course, you learned about many different types of research and when and where it would be conducted. Despite all the different methods that psychologists use to gather data and report results, many still consider the field a soft science. Read the article Public Skepticism of Psychology for a description of why psychology might be viewed as a soft science. After reading the article, use information that you have learned in the course to dispute this view. Discuss specific ideas you have learned in the course that illustrate the soundness of psychological research. Next, discuss how you might apply the skills you have learned throughout the course to your career and personal life. Discuss how understanding the course material will help you in your professional and personal life.

For this discussion, find a journal article and analyze the results section of the article. Answer the Question …..  Is Psychology a Soft Science?

Scientific Research & Investigation

Researchers often go through several stages of data analysis and often conduct many different statistical tests to examine the data. For this discussion, find a journal article and analyze the results section of the article. Your article may use any type of research method, but it should not be a review article. Answer the following questions in your analysis. (questions attached)

Parenting and Education During Early Childhood

Prepare a 1,200- to 1,400-word paper in which you examine various forms of caregivers, parenting styles, and early childhood education. Be sure to include the following items in your assessment: Evaluate the different types of parenting styles and their influence on development during infancy and early childhood. Compare and contrast at least two different kinds of caregivers (e.g., stay at home parent, daycare, grandparent, nanny) and the positive and/or negative impacts on development during infancy and early childhood. Discuss how early childhood education has evolved and its impact on cognitive development in early childhood

Use a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Cognitive psychology discussion post

Discussion post – 2 to 3 paragraphs

Attention is a cognitive function that plays a central role in almost everything we do throughout the day. Based on this week’s readings, discuss the area/aspect of attention that you think is most important for or most influential on cognition. For example, when is vigilance or divided attention important for cognitive processing? Or how can unconscious processing influence our perception of an item? Be sure to support your opinions with specific terms and theories from the readings. How could you apply the ideas you have discussed to different settings, for example, in driving or advertising?

Does Rawls' approach provide a better social contract than Hobbes?

Does Rawls’ approach provide a better social contract than Hobbes?

For this discussion board recall the last module’s reading from Hobbes’ Leviathan and contrast it with the position of John Rawls in the selection from the first of his seminal work in political philosophy, A Theory of Justice (1972).

First, explain Rawls’ argument for the Original Position and it helps us choose the basic structure of society. Next briefly reiterate Hobbes’ argument for an absolute monarchy. Finally, consider each of the readings and provide an argument for which of these positions is a better or more realistic vision of political life. Choose only one to support, not both. Make sure you consider both readings equally in your response.

Required Reading – John Rawls, A Theory of Justice (Selection)

Recommended Reading – “Original Position”, Sections 1, 2, & 3.

Important: You may find some of the information in Sections 5 & 6 helpful. Please be advised that you should proceed through this material in a cautious and careful manner. The terminology is tricky and it usage is not always as apparent as it would be in everyday conversation.

Cognitive Psychology – topic and setting submission for final project

Overview: As a professional with a cognitive psychology background, you may be called upon to contribute your insights to help solve a contemporary problem in an applied setting. This solution could take the form of a proposal for a new program, research study, or initiative. For your final project, you will select an applied professional setting and contemporary problem related to cognitive processes and draft a proposal to explore strategies to improve the problem in that particular setting.

In order to help you organize the thoughts you generated in an earlier discussion board in Module One, this assignment will allow you the opportunity to develop a topic suggestion. First, you will identify your topic of interest within the field of cognitive psychology from the following options:

·Attention

·Learning

·Memory

·Language

·Decision making

Next, you will choose an applied setting, a professional field that could pose a contemporary problem related to your identified topic. You will describe how this problem relates to your topic and setting in this assignment.

·Education

·Law

·Mental health

·Technology

Finally, you will generate three research questions about a contemporary problem related to your topic and applied setting.

For example, if your topic is attention and your field of interest is technology, your potential problem could be related to decreasing attention spans and the online learning environment. Some potential research questions related to this problem might include:

·How does multitasking (e.g., listening to music while reading or texting while reading) influence attention to online course material?

·How do individuals with ADHD perform in an online learning environment, and what strategies can help them succeed?

·What strategies can teachers and students use to increase attention to relevant material in an online course?

Note that the topic and setting elements are graded Pass/Fail. Please see the feedback provided by your instructor and re-submit, as needed.

Guidelines for Submission: This submission should be approximately one page, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double spaced, adhering to all appropriate writing conventions, including APA-style citation format where appropriate. Feel free to use bulleted lists to identify your topic, setting, and research questions. Your contemporary problem will require explanation in a written paragraph.

Cognitive Psychology – Annotated Bibliography for final project

Final Project Milestone Two: Annotated Bibliography

In this milestone, you will work from the topic, applied setting, and research questions you identified in Module Two and start identifying relevant research to support your final proposal. Two major aspects of your final project include selecting foundational theories relevant to your topic and suggesting potential strategies or techniques that may alleviate a problem in an applied setting. To help you prepare for these aspects of the project, you will complete an annotated bibliography featuring a minimum of four research articles. Two of the articles that you find should be related to the theories you related to your topic that you intend to feature in your final proposal. The other two articles should discuss applied research related to your topic area.

For each article, include a summary that highlights how the article relates to your chosen topic and setting, and address the following questions:

How do the research results and statistical findings in the article apply to your research question and your applied setting?

What are the strengths and limitations of the research results and findings in supporting the research question?

How could you expand on available research to more specifically address your research question?

Overview:

When engaged in the research process, it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the amount of information you are taking in. Sometimes writers begin to lose track of how the content they are reading will be helpful in

supporting the claims they make in their papers or in their research question. A working annotated bibliography helps writers organize potentially useful resources and streamlines the process of identifying relevant research.

When drafting a proposal, it is important to make a compelling case why the proposed project can improve practice in an applied setting. As a psychologist, you do this by pulling from examples of theoretical and applied research from the field. Works of theoretical research establish foundational theories and offer insight as to why problems exist in an applied setting. Applied research studies observe practice in an applied setting and suggest strategies and techniques to improve a problem based on collected data. Together, these types of research comprise a well – balanced argument that explains why a problem exists and how it can be fixed.

In Module Four, you will submit a working annotate bibliography with at least four entries, including

scholarly books or articles, pertaining to your proposal topic, applied setting, and the research questions

identified in Module Two. Two of the articles you find should be related to the theories you related to your topic that you intend to feature in your final proposal. The other two articles should discuss applied research related to your topic area.

For each article, include one paragraph summarizing how the article relates to your chosen topic and setting and a second paragraph addressing the following questions:

•How do the research results and statistical findings in the article apply to your research question and

your applied setting?

•What are the strengths and limitations of the research results and findings in supporting the research

question?

•How could you expand on available research to more specifically address your research question?

Conclude each entry with a brief critique of the article. What are the strengths of limitations of the research? How could future research build on these findings?

Guidelines for Submission: Each annotation should be 1-2 paragraphs in length, double-spaced in Times New Roman 12-point font, using proper APA citations.

Advance Research Methods

IN two separate headings discuss the following. Include reference from :

Bordens, K.S., & Abbott, B.B. (2018). Research design and methods. (10th ed). New

York: McGraw Hill Education.  Minimum 350 words each topic

Discussion Topic: Aging or Changes Over Time

Think of a research topic in developmental psychology that deals with aging or changes over time (possibly the research idea that you are using for your proposal). Briefly describe the different developmental designs, and select one that you would use to explore this topic. Provide a rationale as to why you would use the approach that you selected and why you believe this method is preferable to the other two in this case. Describe some of the pragmatic issues that researchers face when using the developmental designs and how these issues can threaten the validity of your results. Finally, take some time to discuss the problem of generational cohorts and whether or not you feel this would be an issue in your hypothetical study.

Discussion Topic: Single-Subject Methods

How are the single-subject methods unique to experimental research? Think of a problem behavior that you might want to improve upon in one of your future clients, and devise a single-subject design to study the effectiveness of your new intervention. Which single-subject approach would you use here (baseline, discrete trials, dynamic), and why?
