HPE 4393: Epidemiology; Fact Sheet Assignment

100 points

Due 4/16 via eLearning

Assignment

Students will conduct research on a specific health condition, disease, injury, or other health outcome that impacts humans, then create a concise fact sheet summarizing findings and describe the condition you selected. You may work independently or with a partner, but no more than two students may work together.

NOTE: Because we are working online for the rest of the semester, I do not expect an infographic. I expect a regular word document with an introduction paragraph and then additional sections of information that can be listed as bullet points or paragraph narrative. You should still include at least one chart, map, or other scientific graphic that provides additional content for your fact sheet.

Fact Sheet Requirements

  • The fact sheet should be 2 pages minimum, 4 pages maximum (pages after the 5th page will not be reviewed/graded). References must be included in the 2-4 pages. You should include full references at the end. You may use APA style or another style, just be consistent.
  • Include at least one graphic – but make sure it’s a scientific graphic like a map that shows frequency distribution, a chart, a medical diagram, etc.
  • You must include at least 5 references, and you must have at least 1 reference that is a peer-reviewed, scientific review or original study from public health or medical journals, published within the last 5 years.

Steps to follow to create the fact sheet

  • Choose a topic
    • It should be a disease or health condition that affects humans. You can use the A-Z index on the US CDC website (www.cdc.gov) as a starting point.
  • Conduct your research
  • Limit the scope of your fact sheet
    • Pull out the key pieces of information to answer each question as concisely as possible.

Questions to answer within your fact sheet

For some topics, these will not all be appropriate to include, but be sure to clearly state that fact and a justification so that I don’t think you have just skipped it. You don’t have to use this order.

  • a)What is the name of the disease or condition? How is it defined and diagnosed?
  • b)Why is it a problem? Describe its symptoms, morbidity, and mortality.
  • c)What are the major risk factors of the condition? Is there a known agent or cause of the disease? If the cause is not completely understood, what are the leading candidates for causes?
  • d)What populations are at risk for this disease or condition? Does the disease vary by subgroups or by geographic location? How? Consider how the disease or condition varies by aspects of person, place, and time.
  • e)What are the appropriate measures of morbidity and mortality? For example, consider using the following… (include all that are appropriate for your topic, as well as any other measures of morbidity or mortality that you find)
    1. Incidence
    2. Prevalence
    3. Case fatality rate
    4. Proportional mortality ratio
    5. Sex- or age-specific mortality rate
  • f)How is the disease treated?
  • g)How is the disease prevented (are there behaviors that can help prevent the condition/outcome)?

Tips

  • Put your name(s) on the fact sheet
  • Spell out acronyms or abbreviations on the first reference, then use the letters
  • Use graphics or tables to back up your points – but only use graphics that add to the information
  • Use bullets to simplify key points
  • Take into account the reading level of your audience – avoid the use of jargon or words that are too complex
  • I recommend that you choose COVID-19 for this assignment, but you may choose a different topic if you prefer.

MGMT 412 unit 3 Individual Project

Project Management: MGMT412

Deliverable Length: 2-4 pages

McGee Carpet and Trim installs carpets in commercial offices.  Andrea McGee has been very concerned with the amount of time it took to complete several recent jobs.  Some of her workers are very unreliable.  A list of activities and their optimistic completion time, the most likely completion time, and the pessimistic completion time (all in days) for a new contract are provided in a given table.  Following are the activities that are required to install the carpets in the offices: Activity 1 (Measure office room dimensions), Activity 2 (Estimate cost), Activity 3 (Material Requisition), Activity 4 (Workforce Requisition), Activity 5 (Special Tool Requisition), Activity 6 (Installation), Activity 7 (Inspection and customer acceptance).

Activity 2 starts immediately after Activity 1. Activity 3, Activity 4, and Activity 5 start concurrently after Activity 2. Activity 6 does not start until after Activity 3, Activity 4, and Activity 5 are completed. The carpet installation project is complete after Activity 7 is completed. If OT = Optimistic Time, MT = Most Likely Time, and PT = Pessimistic Time, use Program Evaluation Review Estimate (PERT) to compute the statistical time for each activity in the table shown below.

Also, (a) Determine the expected completion time and the variance for each activity (b) Determine the total project completion time and the critical path for the project.  (c) Determine Early Start (ES), Early Finish (EF), Late Start (LS), and slack for each activity.  What is the probability that McGee Carpet and Trim will finish the project in 40 days or less?   Define project management and the necessary      requirements. Analyze implications of changes in project scheduling. Evaluate application of project management techniques      in terms of the firm’s business operational goals and requirements.

Please submit your assignment in an APA formatted paper.

Submitting your assignment in APA format means, at a minimum, you will need the following: TITLE PAGE.      Remember the Running head: AND TITLE IN ALL CAPITALS ABSTRACT.      A summary of your paper…not an introduction. Begin writing in third person      voice. BODY.       The body of your paper begins on the page following the title page and      abstract page and must be double-spaced (be careful not to triple- or      quadruple-space between paragraphs). The type face should be 12-pt. Times      Roman or 12-pt. Courier in regular black type. Do not use color, bold      type, or italics except as required for APA level headings and references.      The deliverable length of the body of your paper for this assignment is      2-3 pages. In-body academic citations to support your decisions and      analysis are required. A variety of academic sources is encouraged. REFERENCE PAGE.       References that align with your in-body academic sources are listed on the      final page of your paper. The references must be in APA format using      appropriate spacing, hang indention, italics, and upper and lower case      usage as appropriate for the type of resource used. Remember, the Reference      Page is not a bibliography but a further listing of the abbreviated      in-body citations used in the paper. Every referenced item must have a      corresponding in-body citation.

This assignment will be assessed using the additional criteria provided here.

For assistance with your assignment, please use your text, Web resources, and all course materials.

Paper #2 and Oral Task #3

RESEARCH CONCEPT PAPER: Sustainability at FDU

Over the past decade, many higher education institutions have embraced the importance of sustainability, as both developed on college campuses and throughout universities’ curricula. Sustainability is a widely discussed concept that concerns preserving the environment for generations to come. Whether related to concerns over climate change, renewable energy, clean water, effective waste management, or more, sustainability is a goal that many organizations and individuals are currently hoping to achieve.

In recent years, Fairleigh Dickinson University has seen a rising interest among university constituents, students, staff, and faculty alike, to embrace sustainability at the University. As a result, FDU is seeking to develop Sustainability Initiatives at its two New Jersey campuses that may be included in its Strategic Plan for 2021-2025.

The Office of the University Provost is requesting concept papers from the campus community that will address and develop sustainability initiatives at either one or both of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s New Jersey Campuses. The concept papers will be sent to the Office of the University Provost’s Strategic Plan Committee for Sustainability.

You will work with an assigned group to create a concept paper to present to the Strategic Plan Committee for Sustainability. You and your group are tasked with planning a sustainability initiative that will be effective, implementable, and has longevity on the campus of your designation. The paper should also highlight how this proposed initiative how will fulfill a gap in sustainability that the university currently faces, how it will be easy for students, faculty, and staff to adopt, and how it integrates into the current University culture.

The article “Going Green on College Campuses” by Adrienne Mand Lewin for ABC News describes several kinds of initiatives that could be initiated on a college campus. It is your group’s job to create a similar, but unique, sustainability initiative at one or both of FDU’s campuses.

The concept paper must include an explanation of how your sustainability initiative will be effectively implemented and embraced at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Your paper must also include how long this project will take to initiate, develop, and implement (timeline).

The concept paper must be a minimum of 8 full body pages, and meet these Formatting Requirements:

• Letter of Transmittal

• Cover Page (with concept paper title and team member names)

• Table of Contents

• Purpose (Body) – 1 page

• Background (Body) – 1 page

• Proposal (Body) – 1 page

• Timeline of Implementation (Body) – 1 page

• References

All papers should cite their research in APA Formatting.

After submission of the Final Proposal, all groups will present their concept papers in an Oral Presentation.

Your Task:

Write a concept paper that fulfills the Strategic Plan Committee for Sustainability’s solicitation. You will be assigned to a group. You and your team must all collaborate with one another on all ideas and writing for the assignment. Following final submission of your concept paper, you will present with your team in an Oral Presentation.

Requirements:

1. All groups must collaborate and contribute equal parts work

2. All papers must meet the Formatting Requirements listed above.

3. All papers must be proofread before submission. You can receive feedback on your paper at the Metro Writing Studio (MWS) or the Academic Resource Center (ARC) at the Metropolitan Campus and at the Academic Support Center (ASC) at the Florham Campus. Bring the assignment instructions with you when getting tutoring support.

4. All papers must include Secondary Research.

o Students must use AT LEAST 3 secondary sources in writing their Final Draft paper. The “Going Green on College Campuses” by Adrienne Mand Lewin can be included as 1 of the 3 secondary sources. Students may choose to use more than 3 secondary sources.

5. All papers must be submitted in 2 parts, both of which will count towards EACH student’s FINAL GRADE as follows:

o Draft (4 % of Final Grade)

â–ª The initial draft of Proposal should include details about what, if any, initiatives of sustainability exist on the chosen FDU campus. At least 2 secondary sources must be used in the draft.

â–ª The initial draft of the paper must be submitted on Safe Assign by one group member.

Gun Violence

According to Robinson, when we compare America to countries around the world,   America does not have a high rate of crime, but has one of the highest rates   of lethal violence (2012). Discuss three factors that are contributing to   lethal violence. Using the Problem Analysis Triangle (introduced in Week   Two), discuss three potential initiatives to counter gun violence. What are   examples of initiatives outside the criminal justice system (i.e., law   enforcement, courts, and corrections) that can impact crime and criminal   issues?

Your initial post must be a minimum of 250 words in length. Support your post   with examples from your required reading material and /or other scholarly   sources, and provide in-text citation in APA style.

Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7. Review the   initial posts of your classmates. They discussed three factors that   contribute to lethal violence. Select one of these factors and discuss what   the implications and consequences of the factor are on social justice in   society. Does this factor enhance or detract from criminal justice?

Children,   Media, and Junk Food

Proper health and nutrition is of critical importance to the growth and development of young children yet many American children eat in ways that do not meet proper nutrition guidelines.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the media, and its promotion of junk food, is one of the main culprits in the obesity epidemic.  Read the article, “Children, Adolescents, Obesity, and the Media,” and watch the video, We’re Not Buying It: Stop Junk Food Marketing to Kids.

In your post, address the following: What role does the media play in the promotion of      unhealthy food choices?  Identify and describe a specific example. What are the long-term consequences of these media      messages on children’s health and nutrition? Describe two to three specific things parents and      teachers of young children can do to combat media messages that promote      unhealthy food choices.

Your discussion post should be at least 200 words in length.

Guided Response:  Read and respond to at least two of your classmates with at least one additional idea for parents or teachers to combat unhealthy media messages.  Each response should be at least 50 words in length.
