The First one :

Compared to chapter one, chapter two had a lot of in-depth information about migration. One surprising fact for me was the “white persons” only discriminatory law in effect until 1952. I always thought immigration issues are a current problem only but it seems like we have been dealing with the issues of migration laws since very long time. It was also interesting to read about how there are different types of movement, and it depends on certain factors such as the migrating unit, situation at the point of origin and destination and the socioeconomic and political framework within which migration occurs. I am from India; I voluntarily moved here about ten years ago. Since I am a migrant myself, I know all those factors play a significant role when deciding to move. Another interesting part of the chapter was a note on the “black-white paradigm.” As it states in the book, the analysis done by some academic researchers suggest that there was too much attention given to white-black issues and too little attention to all other groups of color. I believe that one major factor in this is media. More often than not, media exaggerates issues and which is why when the movement of African American slavery was going on, this issue became institutionalized. Since then, the government and media have been too focused on it.

The Second one :

I thought chapter 2 was more involved in theories and historical examples of immigration and oppressive acts that followed. With the opening of the chapter once again linking to the idea of class and hierarchy within white descendants to colored peoples, the chapter is interesting with the history of order/ assimilation theories and power-conflict theories. I liked that the ethnic terms were well defined within each section that gave proper understanding of the term use within the chapter. A lot of the theories mentioned in the chapter focused on the relations of European and Caucasian descendants and the African American integration from slavery to modern day. It talked about the subordinate economic, political, segmented aspects of society. The birth of stereotypes and racial nomenclature play into the structural foundation for racial separation and inequality that has continued throughout society. This was an interested chapter because it does give a prelude to cultures and subjects that will be further addressed in later chapters but gives a nice introduction to the content and context of the beginnings of racism and its impact on society and how society has functioned due to the standards created in the earliest eras of this country.

An organization’s operational budget is no more than next year’s action plan in financial terms. It should list major goals and objectives for the upcoming year, as outlined in an organization’s strategic plan. The budget must identify which programs or services best achieve those goals and estimate all expenses necessary to deliver them. Budget documents should also include expectations for revenue. Despite the necessary elements involved in all operational budgets, these documents can vary in quality from organization to organization. Each year, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awards government organizations for the quality of their budget documents, using criteria established in its Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Program.

In this Assignment, you evaluate a budget document using the above criteria. Review the criteria for the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Award Program in the Learning Resources for this week. Then, select a public organization and a specific budget document from the organization.

The Challenge

Your M3 reading assignments include an article on adaptive reuse (see Adaptive reuse in the healthcare industry: repurposing abandoned buildings to serve medical missions), a practice which has vast implications for healthcare strategy. It also represents a very good opportunity for you to leave your “desks” and get out into the field to explore possibilities. Here’s the scenario:

A dentist desires to establish a clinic in or around your given marketplace and he has reached out to you for assistance. He will serve as the sole dentist within the given clinic and he will offer the customary array of services available at most any general dentistry practice. The dentist desires operational efficiency and also takes opportunities where possible to make environmentally-responsible decisions. Having learned of adaptive reuse, he enlists you to search the local marketplace seeking abandoned and available commercial buildings which might be able to be converted into a dental practice through adaptive reuse. Your mission is to identify three potential adaptive reuse candidates in your area, identifying their physical address, describing them in detail, and ranking their potential to be converted successfully. The candidates must be actual commercial properties which currently are for sale, so best to consult commercial real estate websites and conduct good old-fashioned, boots-on-the-ground investigations to identify prospects. Feel free to supply links in your text to real estate listings, if available, or other resources to identify your selected candidates.

Note that in the real world, a project such as this would represent quite the undertaking, requiring possession of an extensive array of information (e.g., spatial needs, financial resources available, location preferences, etc.). Such rich detail (and the time needed to make use of it) isn’t available due to obvious course parameters, but you certainly have sufficient time to perform a cursory examination within your local marketplace for purposes of identifying a few potential candidates. That’s exactly what you must do and, through this, you’ll have a better understanding of adaptive reuse.

The Submission Requirement
