Prepare a well-constructed letter to the editor that considers the following questions:

• Identify a specific, current issue (possibly within the field of education, criminal justice, or government) through which to explore these questions.
• How might knowledge, practices, and acceptance (or nonacceptance) of psychological research, concepts, and trends be helpful or harmful to society?
• How does psychology influence social, cultural, and political issues?

Additional Requirements

• Written communication: Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
• APA formatting: Ensure that resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting guidelines.
• Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.

Chapter 16, Research Report 16.1 – Sociotechnical systems

The Trist and Bamforth (1951) article is a foundation article, so it should be possible to find something more recent than this article. The point of the exercise is to find another article dealing with sociotechnical systems.

To that end it may be helpful to:

1. Use the library databases to search on “sociotechnical systems” as well as the authors’ names to find related articles. “Social systems” and “technical systems” might also be used, but “sociotechnical systems” is the term usually used in the literature.
2. Use Research report 16.1 to generate search terms, as previously suggested. The narrative has useful phrases that can be used for a literature search.
3. You do not want to merely summarize the article. You want to indicate whether the article you found is consistent or inconsistent with the Trist and Bamforth (1951) findings. Then you want to discuss what these results, as a whole (both articles together), mean to leaders and managers in terms of being able to consider sociotechnical systems successfully when planning change efforts.

Oligopoly and Game Theory

You may have noticed the discussion in Taylor (2014) at the end of Chapter 10 about oligopoly and the prisoner’s dilemma. The prisoner’s dilemma is an example of game theory. A “game” is like a board game, as your optimal move depends on what your opponent does. The same holds in oligopoly, as your own decisions as to what price to charge or how much to produce depend on what your competitors do.

Find one other YouTube video on game theory and share the link with your classmates. Then discuss the following issues:

• • Did the Batman video or the other video you found help explain the concept of game theory? Or was it just silly?
  • Besides oligopoly, can you think of any other situations that game theory is useful for? This can be situations in the business world, in your own workplace, or even something you saw in a movie or TV show.
  • What do you find easier to follow – the game theory matrices or the math equations/computations that you’ve used in this class?
