point-estimate-and-confidence-interval

WEEK 5 – HOMEWORK 5:

THE REQUIRED WEEK 5 PROBLEM SET IS ON THE ATTACHED WORD.DOCX.

(FROM LANE) Let’s start with the terms “point estimate” and “confidence interval”. You survey 100 units in a 1000 unit apartment building about whether they want cable and 67 units say they do want cable. This of course is 67/100 = 67% of the sample (relative frequency, right?). You now say that “based on your sample (or call it a poll) 67% of the entire apartment building population want cable. The 67% is called a “point estimate”.

But, how sure are you of that single number? Let’s say the cable company must be assured that at least 70% of the units want cable. To satisfy them, you compute a “confidence interval” around your point estimate (we will get to the calculations later). How “confident” do you want to be about this interval? Is being 90% confident OK, or 95%, or 99% ? These are the typical significance levels that we used in earlier work. HERE IS THE PART YOU NEED TO REALLY GET A FEEL FOR: THE HIGHER THE CONFIDENCE LEVEL THE WIDER (NOT NARROWER) THE CONFIDENCE INTERVAL BECOMES.

For our survey the 90% confidence interval could be 67% plus or minus (+) 4%. The 95% CI could be 67% + 10% and the 99% CI could be 67% + 15%. The last CI means that we are 99% confident that the interval from 52% to 82% contains the true value (usually we are talking about the mean). Would this 99% CI satisfy the cable company enough for them to install cable to the apartments? Probably. (If they understood statistics, they might do better using the 90% CI. Do you see that the more confident we want to be the WIDER our confidence interval must be? Make sure you do.

MAKE SURE TO USE THE TABLES (z-TABLES AND t-TABLES) FOR RELEVANT PROBLEMS (NOT SOFTWARE). THESE TABLES ARE AVAILABLE IN THE COURSE RESOURCES. SOFTWARE CAN BE USED TO CHECK YOUR ANSWERS.

Sociology-McDonaldization-of-Society-

Write a 3 page journal in MLA.. The first 2 pages should be the essay and the 3rd page should be the reference page. Cite and reference textbook The McDonaldization of Society by George Rizer. No PLagiarism

George Ritzer explains that fast-food chains have become so popular because they fit with our contemporary lifestyle. In this journal entry, you are going to examine whether this statement fits your own life.

You should answer the questions below to structure your essay.

  • First, think about your own use of fast-food chains (such as McDonald’s, Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, etc.).
    • How often do you use them, and how (dinein, carry out, drive through, etc.)?
  • Then, look at the elements of the changing society that Ritzer describes in his book when he examines the relationship between McDonaldization and social change in American society. ( We are NOT referring to the dimensions of McDonaldization).
    • Which ones of those can you apply to your situation? In other words, in what ways do you see your own life reflecting the changes Ritzer describes?
    • Which ones do not fit? Give specific examples from your life to answer these questions.

At the end, based on your description of how you use fast-food restaurants and how your life has been affected by social changes in American society, decide the following:

  • Does Ritzer’s statement, overall, apply to you, or not .
  • Are the reasons he gives for people using fast food chains the same as your reasons?

Crime-Scene-Scenario-social-science-homework-help

You are the lead investigator who is called to the scene of a potential crime. The victim was found by a bystander at the bottom of a cliff. It appears that she was hiking and fell. There are multiple abrasions all over her body. The body has no identification, and you have no reports of missing persons regarding anyone matching her description.

Consider the first three steps of the Criminal Justice Decision Making Model:

Step One: Define the problem (and the questions that need to be answered): From your reading, pay specific attention to the sections on Challenges in Investigation, Equivocal Death, Suicide, Preliminary Investigation of Homicide, the Homicide Victim, and Estimating the Time of Death. Describe the steps you would take in determining (1) whether this was an accident, suicide, or potential homicide; (2) techniques that could be used to determine time of death; and (3) ways that you might identify the victim.

Step Two: Gather evidence (law, policy, procedure, data) and evaluate for relevancy: Find information on additional forensic techniques that might help in your investigation. What evidence might help you ascertain whether or not an additional person was on the scene? How might that influence your findings?

Step Three: Weigh moral considerations and direct/indirect consequences: What would be the next steps that you might take in this investigation? If you were to identify the victim and find that she was in a relationship with reported accounts of domestic violence, how might this influence your investigation?

Following Steps 4 and 5 of the Criminal Justice Decision Making Model, write a 1.5 -page essay in which you discuss the steps you would take in this investigation. As you write your essay, focus on using effective descriptions to communicate your points. This should include the use of vivid language, creating an experience for your audience, and showing rather than telling what the processes are. Use source material with APA citations to support your points as necessary.

Step Four: Write your proposal, utilizing the above material.

Step Five: Balance your position by addressing alternatives and potential pitfalls.

Format-a-business-letter

Assignment Instructions

Compose the business letter (in proper business letter format) based on the information for the scenario noted below. Please feel free to use business letter formats and page set ups that you view in our readings, or ones you search for using MS Word templates. Any formal business letter template that you find in Word or other credible format sources is fine for this assignment.

You will want a sender address (that would be you, but you can use a made up address) and you can make a letterhead to be most complete.
Remember to include a “to” or recipient address (make it up if you need to).
Subject line
and Date would also be in a business letter.
You will need a salutation as well.

Here are the details that the letter must include (adapted from Davis 93):
You are a tax accountant for a woman named Dr. Barbara Smith. She is a retired university professor. She recently received a letter from the IRS dated December 2, 2012. The letter has a heading titled “Proposed Changes to Income.” She is giving you the letter to represent her on a response to the IRS.
The following facts concern this issue and you need to incorporate them in the letter, using the best possible order and layout, following the Six Cs of Communication.

(These facts are not listed in a particular or desired order):

The IRS claims that Dr. Smith had three income payments not reported or listed on her tax return.

The Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association payment she received that year was $1,213. Of this amount, $516 was on her return on Schedule B as dividends.

The College Retirement Equity Annuity payment she received of $2,656 seems to be missing from her return.

Dr. Smith has a business that includes writing.

Of the Teachers Inurance Annuity Association payment, $697 of it was listed on line 16 of the return as fully taxable pension.

You want the IRS to send Dr. Smith a revised tax bill.

Dr. Smith’s Social Security Number (SSN) is 123-56-9876

The book royalties of $275 she earned was included in the $4,660 gross receipts on Schedule C under Business Income.

Carefully consider the way to send a letter, correcting the record and noting what was indeed reported and any other corrections that need to be made. Consider how to visually order and layout this information.

According to Daft, a goal is “a desired future circumstance or condition that the organization attempts to realize” (Daft, 205). Goals can describe what the organization plans on accomplishing in terms of growth, profits, and employees. According to Daft, “A plan is a blueprint for goal achievement and specifies the necessary resource allocations, schedules, tasks, and other actions” (205). Planning is the next step that the organization does in order to achieve their goal.

I work for the Park District and they thrive to become the leading provider of recreation and leisure opportunities to Chicago residents and visitors. They also thrive to have safe, inviting and beautifully maintained parks within a ten minute walk of every Chicago resident. In order for them to thrive they had to come up with new goals to improve, expand and update their parks throughout Chicago. Their goals were to replant degrading park landscapes, rehabilitate dozens of park structures, elevate the level of maintenance of park facilities, construct new field houses and most importantly completely revamp its programming.

Their plan was to work with other agencies and non profit organizations to achieve their goals of revamping its programming. They also are also planning for some outside resources to help educate and train programs for park district staff members. The Park District has allocated a Capital Improvement Plan that is intended to prioritize new and rehabilitation projects throughout the parks over the next five years. This long term plan compiles requests for capital improvements from numerous sources.
