Based on your research and discussion activities this week on File Sharing and Artists Royalties and Compensation for Online Music sales, propose a new law covering Global Internet sales (a hypothetical international law) which will help protect artist rights and ability to be compensated for creative works. Your new “law” needs to address these issues: 1. Artists Royalties and Compensation for Music Downloads and Streaming, both for performance and composition, 2. File Sharing law.

Present a short defense of your position on each issue and how the law supports artists rights (or not). Assume you are not bound by existing US or International regulations, but take into consideration the differences in US and European compensation and protection policies as they exist today. This “law” should be well written in a simple, easy to read form (no “legalese” needed) and should be short and to the point. You need to cite any materials you use from your research.

Theme Reading/Activity 1

Read the following excerpt from Peter Elbow’s Writing Without Teachers (1973). After reading, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and try to freewrite as Elbow describes it. Use a pen and paper, not a word processor (this will let you write a little slower, emphasize, underline, scribble, not be bothered by autocorrect etc). Don’t stop for anything. Don’t put down your pen until the timer goes off. To make it easier to get started, try responding to this question: “Who are you?”

Once the timer goes off and you have completed your freewrite, take a minute to read it over. Where do you repeat yourself, change topics, ask questions, babble etc. In other words, what are some things you notice about your writing. Did you write any answers to the question of “who are you?” that perhaps you didn’t expect?

After reading it over, post a paragraph summary of the freewrite here. This summary allows you to share the parts of your freewrite you think are interesting and keep private the parts that are personal. After the summary paragraph, include a paragraph of reflection. How did this exercise work out for you? Did you find it difficult? Interesting? Entertaining? Frustrating? Most importantly: do you think this freewriting method could help lead you to topics worth researching later on in this class?

Read the following excerpts from Thomas King’s The Truth about Stories (if you’re pressed for time, focus on the first 10 pages) and Jim Corder’s “Argument as Emergence, Rhetoric as Love” (the first 3 sections are most important). As you read, try and form connections between the two arguments. How are they similar? How are they different? What purpose does each one serve and for what audience are they written?

Last week you responded to Peter Elbow’s freewriting task by attempting to answer the question “Who are you?” This week, think about your identity in terms of the stories/narratives that you tell about yourself and that society tells about you. You might think about how you would answer the question of “Who are you?” as compared to how different people might answer it for you. How would your parents answer it? Your best friend? Your classmates? Stranger on the bus? What stories/narratives inform your answer and what stories/narrative inform theirs? What power do these stories or narratives hold? What responsibilities do they come with?

Post a response here that addresses some of these questions. Your response can take the form of structured paragraphs (around 250 words) or it can be more creative (personal narrative, poetry, comics, music, video, collage, etc). Use whatever genre best makes your point. Be sure to finish your response with a reflection on how contemplating your identity in forms of stories/narratives from a variety of perspectives might lead you to discover a research topic of interest for this class.

Trauma Case Study

Reason for Referral

Maryam is a 17-year-old Caucasian female university student who was referred to your agency by her physician Dr. Jaffee. Maryam presented in her doctor’s office complaining of lack of sleep. Dr. Jaffee did not give her medication as Maryam has reported drinking three to four glasses of vodka and orange juice per night to sleep. Dr. Jaffee’s report indicates the patient is sleeping 2-4 hours per night and often awakens with nightmares. Blood tests were normal with the exception of slightly elevated liver enzymes. Blood pressure was 130/94. Patient was scheduled for a follow-up appointment in two weeks.

Behavioral Observations

Maryam arrived on time for her appointment. She was driven to the appointment by her university roommate. The client appeared anxious, had circles under her eyes, and was tearful during the intake. Maryam was oriented to time, place, and person. Client vocabulary was above average. Client appeared tired and despondent evidenced by low voice, soft speech, and flat affect.

Presenting Problem

Maryam states “I can’t drive a car. I am too afraid that someone will hit me or I will hit someone else. I can’t sleep so I don’t get up to go to class in the morning.” Client states, “I am afraid to drive.” She goes on to state, “I made such a horrible mistake; I don’t deserve to live. I am so stupid.”

Client states that she was involved in a three car accident two months ago. Client reports one person was critically injured and the other was treated and released at the hospital. Client reports she received a citation, as she turned in front of two oncoming cars at a red light.

Support System

Client reports that she lives in student housing on the campus of a local university. She has one roommate who brought her to today’s appointment.

Legal: Client is facing legal problems due to the accident.

Family Support: Maryam’s family lives out of state. She has no relatives that live locally.
