In Franklin H. Giddings book, Democracy and Empire (1901), he coined the phrase

“democratic empire” to suggest that imperial expansion was itself a democratizing project.

It was more than just the introduction of modern infrastructure or the gift of Western

education and civilization, but the creation of social cohesion through the rapid

assimilation of subject peoples. Revisiting the period from the 1880s until the end of the

First World, assess the accuracy of this claim. The U.S. was an empire and it was a

democracy, but are these compatible? Did U.S. imperial ventures undermine or strengthen

democracy? Did movements to expand democracy weaken or strengthen U.S. empire?

In this assignment, you will create a Situation Analysis for one (1) of the following companies / brands: Jeep Cherokee, Amazon.com, or Google.

Each of these three (3) companies (Jeep Cherokee, Amazon.com, and Google) has been through numerous changes in recent years. For this assignment, select only one (1) company / brand. For this assignment think about a specific decision that was made by your supervisor in the organization you currently work for or have worked for in the past. Review the background materials carefully on the Vroom-Yetton model and think about how this model applies to this decision that you experienced. Then write a 2-page paper applying the Vroom-Yetton model to this decision:

1. Describe the decision that management had to make, and also whether their decision-making style was autocratic, consultative, or group-based. Explain your reasoning.
2. Go through Vroom-Yetton’s seven questions and apply these questions to their diagram to see what decision-making style their model suggests. Briefly explain the reasoning behind your answers to the seven questions.
3. Conclude your paper with a discussion of whether or not you would recommend this model to your supervisor and whether or not you were surprised by the recommendation given by this model regarding decision-making style.
