PROMPT-The-context-that-had-created-and-supported-the-Jeffersonian-world-view-

  • PROMPT: The context that had created and supported the Jeffersonian world view (that of the yeoman farmer as the bedrock of American democracy and the American economy) disappeared by the mid-nineteenth century, prompted by a shift toward an economy based on commerce, manufacturing, and larger scale agricultural endeavors. What is your best explanation for why this change took place? What impact did this change have upon the ethics and civics of what it meant to be an American? Be sure to consider change over time and geographical differences in your analysis.

Hint: Think broadly here as you scattershoot/concept map your essay before writing. What were the economic causes of this change (think about markets, productivity, trade policies, etc.)? What role did technological change play? Consider social causes (conflicts between groups, classes, races, genders), political causes (new voters, political parties, institutional leadership, etc.), government (state, federal, various branches), and expansion of the nation. Think also about intellectual changes (new ways of thinking, religion, and conceptions what it means to be an American and questions of ethics and civics) and changes in environment. You need not answer all of these questions in your essay, they are here to guide your thinking on the prompt. Hint 2: Make sure that you integrate your discussion of Change over Time and Ethics/Civics throughout your analysis, not just in one paragraph. This means that Change over Time and Ethics/Civics WILL NOT be key points in your rule of three thesis statement.

  • Requirements for the Final Essay

    • Must be in Rule of Three format with a introduction and strong thesis statement, 3 paragraphs of the body (each with their own thesis statement – one for each of the three key points of your overall thesis), and conclusion. So a minimum of 5 paragraphs.
    • This is a fact based essay, you must provide specific and detailed evidence for your hypotheses.
    • You must utilize a minimum of three primary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay
    • You must utilize a minimum of three secondary sources from the assigned materials as evidence in your essay
    • You may only use materials assigned in this course for your essay (we have vetted all the materials utilized in this course, other materials may not be appropriate or accurate)
    • DO NOT quote secondary sources
    • You may briefly quote a primary source (a phrase or a sentence) before immediately analyzing the relevance of the quote – a quote cannot stand alone as explanation or evidence
    • You must consider change over time in this essay
    • You must consider ethics/ethical decision making in this essay
    • You must consider change over time in this essay
    • Don’t forget about geography, where something takes place matters and it may be important to your argument.
    • You must use Turabian citation style in this essay; all citations must be footnote style citations (no parenthetical cites allowed, no endnotes/works cited at the end, you need footnotes). Be sure to review how to properly cite a primary source that may be contained in another work and be sure to use page numbers where possible.
    • 12 pt type, 1 inch margins, double-spaced

  • How the Assignment is Graded

The assignment is worth up to 50 points. The following factors are taken into account when we grade:

RULE OF THREE THESES – Do you have a well thought out and clear overall thesis in your introduction? Do you have a thesis statement for each of your three paragraphs of the body? Do the paragraphs of the body follow the overall thesis statement?

EVIDENCE – You must have solid evidence for each point you raise in the thesis. Evidence is not simply a statement, there must be an explanation of how that evidence supports the thesis statement. Example: If you were writing a paragraph on the causes of the Cold War, you might use the Baruch Plan as an example. Simply writing “the Baruch Plan was a cause of the Cold War” in your paragraph would not be enough and would not be analytical. However, the following sentences do provide a good analysis of this piece of evidence:”One cause of the Cold War was the failure of the United States and the Soviet Union to agree upon a plan for nuclear disarmament after World War II. The Baruch Plan, presented by the US, would maintain the American atomic weapon advantage for the foreseeable future. This played into Stalin’s suspicions of the Americans’ true motivations toward the USSR.”Did you use the minimum number of primary sources? secondary sources?

    HISTORICAL ACCURACY, CLARITY, AND LOGIC
Is your argument clear and does it make sense? Is it historically accurate? Does your evidence prove your point? Does your analysis answer the prompt? Have you considered change over time and geographic differences in your essay?

    PROPER CITATION
Have you properly cited? Have you used Turabian/Chicago? You must also FOOTNOTE. Parenthetical cites are NOT allowed.

    GRAMMAR, SPELLING AND MECHANICS
Is the essay up to college standards for grammar and spelling? Is it an analytical essay? Does it meet minimum length and formatting requirements?

Assignment W7 (100 points)

“Civility”

This week, we briefly took a look at civility in a TEDtalk video. Our discussion forum also addressed the issue of civility. As you go through college, you will encounter a greater variety of people from all kinds of backgrounds. It is increasingly important in our society today to maintain civility as we interact with others. What exactly is civility?

For this assignment write a five paragraph essay explaining the definition of civility and its importance in education. Be sure to follow the steps below to find an article that addresses the issue and incorporate at least one quote and one paraphrase from the article to support your ideas.

Assignment Steps

1.Use EBSCOhost to find a scholarly article pertaining to the topic of “civility.”

2.Prepare a summary of the article.

a.As you read the article, pause after each paragraph and jot down the main point of that paragraph.

b.Use your own words – do not copy the authors’ words.

c.Find ideas that you want to either quote directly or paraphrase in your paper. (Look for an idea that is so powerful, you cannot put it into your own words.)

d.Note the page number where the idea comes from.

3.Write a five paragraph essay on civility utilizing the resources from steps 1 and 2.

a.Your paper should be at least 750 words

b.Include a thesis statement in the introductory paragraph.

c.Write three supporting paragraphs with topic sentences that enhance and extend the thesis statement.

i.Include descriptions or examples of civility

ii.Cite your sources

1.Paraphrases must be highlighted in yellow

2.Direct quotes must be highlighted in blue

iii.Don’t simply drop your quote or paraphrase into a paragraph. Introduce the quote and the author before using it, and explain the quote’s relevance to your topic afterward. For example:
As John Rogers, lead canine researcher for The University of Southern California States, “Canines, while extremely vicious at times, are more prone to use their strength for the aid of others” (21). This demonstrates that dogs’ strength tends to be a virtue rather than a deficit.

d.Include a concluding paragraph that provides an appropriate closing to your essay.

4.List your sources in a References page at the end of your paper.

Health policy

Go to the Harvard Kennedy School and purchase the case study – Expanding Health Insurance to Millions: Learning from the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment ($3.95): https://case.hks.harvard.edu/expanding-health-insu…

Write a memo to the governor providing policy advice on their next steps based on your critical analysis of the information provided in the case as well as your knowledge of the health care system. Your memo should provide your position on the issue – after the experiment, should the State of Oregon expand their health insurance program? Your analysis should be supported by one or more policy analysis criteria – ethical, economical, feasibility etc. Identify at least 2 challenges or issues raised by the experiment and provide policy solutions to address them in support of the policy to expand health insurance coverage OR use these challenges to support your position against the policy to expand health insurance coverage in Oregon. You may need to do some research on your own to find evidence to support your position (Peer reviewed research literature and other resources). Please see grading rubric for assignment on Canvas. Remember this assignment is considered the examination for this course. Good luck

1 Paragraph Response to 2 Classmate’s Post (2 Paragraphs Total)

Respond by Day 5 to at least two of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:

  • Ask a probing question.
  • Share an insight from having read your colleague’s posting.
  • Offer and support an opinion.
  • Validate an idea with your own experience.
  • Make a suggestion.
  • Expand on your colleague’s posting.

Classmate 1 (Amy) Post:

“My final project will be a survey to measure several items in connection with selecting the right people for the right volunteer positions to make the organization more effective. The items surveyed will be personality traits, ability, interest and attitude. In order to measure these items, I will construct a questionnaire which will ask questions of both volunteers and guests. As a result, I hope to find the right volunteers are working in the right position and will experience less stress and burn-out and are considerably happier when they are utilizing their talents.

The three most important considerations related to sampling in my project are: sampled group, reliability and validity of the data (Anastasi, 1997). I would include the sampled group to be the population of interest as the volunteers. The results of the survey will be assessed for reliability and validity to ensure the long-term goals are met and if the goals are not met, then the questionnaire will be given to a second group and those results will be assessed to find out if the questionnaire needs to be changed or if the process needs to be changed (Tett, 2009). In assessing the relationship between the questionnaire and the results given by the questionnaire, the results can differ slightly as each individual has a different view (Sweney, 1962). The questionnaire is multiple choice and the individual should answer based on their initial thought, the researcher will find a slight amount of variance between the results. “

Classmate 2 (Kristopher) Post:

When conducting research, it is important to understand the population that one is examining. This is because it may be difficult or impossible to test the entire population. As a result, one will need to sample a smaller portion of the population to gather results. These samples must be representative of the population (Babbie, 2017). This can be achieved in many ways, however, they must follow certain guidelines so the data can be most accurate.

The sample size must be large enough to have a statistical significance to the larger population (Tett, et al., 2009). There are specific formulas that are designed to demonstrate a sample size that could be extrapolated to a larger population and maintain statistical significance. If a sample size is too small, there could be a lack of statistical significance when a correlation is present. This is known as a type 2 error (Jackson, 2005). If the sample size is too large, then it can consume too many resources and make the data gathering too expensive. For my proposed experiment, I will be focusing on the United States of America and its population. This is because personality types and consumer trends are culturally based (Hays, 2009). Extrapolating data to other cultures would introduce some confounding variables. As a result, the sample size should be dictated by the approximate population of the United States.

Another essential feature of sample significance is that the demographic data of the sample should meet the demographic data of the larger population being studied (Babbie, 2017). For example, the population of the United States is roughly 51% female; as a result, a similar demographic should be found in the sample. One way to ensure this kind of symmetry is to ask for demographic information in the assessment. Common demographic information includes sex, age, and ethnicity (Burkholder, 2016). This way it is possible to correlate the gathered sample data to the overall population census data. Because my specific area of inquiry has to do with personality type, it may be important to utilize other research to determine demographics of personality type so that there is an accurate representation of the number of different personalities in the population.

Randomized sampling is one of the most important parts of generating a sample. A random sample is where every individual of the population has an equal chance of being selected to participate (Burkholder, 2016). This has the unique effect of removing many extraneous variables that are unique to an individual participant. Let us say, for example, the survey is given over the Internet through a specific website. This means that individuals who either do not have the internet, do not have a computer, or do not have the knowledge to navigate to the website cannot participate. This would effectively reduce the randomization of the sample and decrease its overall quality of data. Another example of this is if participants are made to pay $100 to participate, then this would alter the demographic of people participating, such as individuals who value money less or individuals who have $100 to spend. The data gathered would be significantly skewed for the population being studied. However, it may not be entirely possible to have a fully randomized sample. Certain assumptions are made to reduce the number of resources spent on conducting research (Babbie, 2017). For example, it is assumed that most participants are literate and will not need a translator or a reader to participate in the assessment. If this were the case, then there would be a significant increase in resources that could be allocated.”

Week 10 Assignment 4

After twelve (12) years, your business is wildly successful with multiple locations throughout the region. You are now ready to think really big. You want to purchase a huge competitor. (Note: You determine whether the competitor is a privately or publicly held company.) To expand, you will need additional capital from the debt or equity market, or both.

Write a five to seven (5-7) page paper in which you:

1. Use one (1) of the valuation techniques identified in Chapters 10 and 11 to calculate the value of the competitor you wish to purchase. Note: You will have to make assumptions; however, your assumptions need to be rationally supported.
2. Analyze the various financial tools available to you to determine the tools that will be most helpful in assessing whether your company can afford to purchase the competitor. Support your response.

Imagine you can indeed afford to purchase the competitor; however, you will need an additional $100 million.

3. Examine the options available to you to finance the competitor through the debt market, recommending the best alternative as a result of your analysis. Provide support for your recommendation.
4. Examine the options available to you to finance the competitor through the equity market, recommending the best alternative as a result of your analysis. Provide support for your recommendation.
5. Conduct a cross comparison of your debt and equity examinations to determine where to ideally obtain the additional $100 million funding needed to make the purchase and the approach that you would take to securing the funds. Provide support for your recommendation.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Health Care LLC specializes in selling hospital, medical, scientific, laboratory equipment, devices and instruments to hospital and medical colleges. The company handles both written and telephone orders, using the following procedures.

One of several company-employed field sales representatives records customer orders on a three-part form (Form A). The original is left with the customer, the duplicate is mailed to central headquarters each day in a special color-coded envelope, and the triplicate is retained in the sales representative’s order pad. When the written orders arrive at headquarters, they go directly to the secretary of the order entry department. The secretary initially receives all telephone orders and inquiries as well.

The secretary routes inquiries to the customer service representatives and directs both written and telephone orders to one of three order entry clerks. Telephone orders are transcribed onto Form B and then read back to the customer for confirmation. Because both written and telephone orders are now in written form, further processing of Forms A and B is identical.

All customer orders are entered through video display terminal VDT located in order entry. They undergo a series of programmed edits as part of the data entry process. One of the edits is to validate the customer’s name(s), address(es), freight and credit terms, and credit rating by referencing the customer master file (Note: all computer files are kept on disk). The inventory master file is accessed to check inventory availability.

Orders that pass all these tests are then recorded on the sales order master file; the inventory balance is reduced, and a screen message informs the clerk of the updates. The clerk files the accepted customer orders by customer number. Orders that fail any of the edits or validations are recorded in a computer “suspense” file for later investigation.

Each evening, data processing prints five-part sales orders (Form C) from the data stored on the sales order master file. Order entry receives two copies of the sales order; it files copy 2 in the accepted order file and mails the original (copy 1) to the customer. Copies 3 and 4 are sent to the warehouse, and copy 5 is sent to accounts receivable. Using copy 3, warehouse workers pick the goods. They file copy 3 and deliver the goods and copy 4 to the shipping department.

A shipping clerk checks the assembled order against sales order copy 4, prepares a three-part shipping notice (Form D), and records the shipment in a shipping log. The shipping notice original, signed by the carrier, serves as the bill of lading; sales order copy 4 is used as the packing slip. The bill of lading and packing slip accompany the goods to the customer. The duplicate of the shipping notice is sent to accounts receivable; the triplicate is sent to order entry, where it is filed in the accepted order file.
