Module 3 – Case

MARKET STRUCTURE AND GAME THEORY

Assignment Overview

As always, make sure to thoroughly review the required background materials before starting the assignments. The assignment questions will require you to do some calculations and also apply the concepts from the module. Question 3 differs from previous assignments in that you have to use an online simulation tool; but this activity should be a fun break from the standard numerical problems you have been doing.

Case Assignment

    1. For this problem use the Herfindahl Index to compute market concentration:
      1. Suppose Apple has 45% of the U.S. market share for smartphones, followed by Samsung with 30%, LG with 9%, Motorola with 8%, HTC with 6%, and Nokia with 2%. What is the Herfindahl Index for the smartphone industry based on these numbers? Based on the Herfindahl Index, do you think the government would be willing to approve a merger between Apple and Samsung?
      2. Now suppose Nokia and Motorola come out with a new smartphone that takes away a huge chunk of market share from Apple and Samsung. The new market shares are 25% for Apple, 20% for Samsung, 20% for Motorola, 20% for Nokia, 10% for LG, and 5% for HTC.
    2. Use what you learned about perfect competition, monopoly, and oligopoly to answer these questions:
      1. In the table below is the quantity produced, the price, the fixed costs, and variable costs for a perfectly competitive firm that faces a constant price of $150 for its product regardless of the quantity it sells. Use the information in the first four columns to calculate the number for the last four columns. At what quantity should they produce based on what you find with your results?
      2. How do you think your answer might change if it became a monopolist with all of its competitors leaving the market? Or if it became an oligopoly with only one or two competitors?

    1. You’ve read about the prisoner’s dilemma in the background readings. Suppose you are a business owner with just one main competitor. If neither you nor your competitor cut your prices, you will both be more profitable. However, if your competitor lowers its prices and you keep your prices high, then you will lose all of your sales to your competitor. Every month you and your competitor place advertisements in the local newspaper with your price – so you need to decide each month whether or not to keep prices high, or lower them based on what you think your competitor might do.

Go to the following webpage and test out some of your potential price strategies:
      http://www.gametheory.net/Mike/applets/PDilemma/Pdilemma.html

The strategy “defect” indicates lowering your prices. The strategy “cooperate” means keep prices the same. Try out different strategies, such as cooperating all the time or defecting sometimes. There are five different rounds of this game, each with a competitor with different personalities and different strategies. Play all five rounds and experiment with different strategic approaches. Report your scores for each round, and discuss which strategies seemed to work the best for you.

MARKET STRUCTURE AND GAME THEORY

Required Reading

To start with, take a look at this short animated video that will introduce you to the basics of market structure:

McGlasson, M. (2009). Episode 25: Market structures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Hxy-TuX9fs&list=PLr6g_xbkz_0u_cINHBVW1ZuEpozKk2XGx

Now read Chapters 9 and 10 from the following book for more detail on these topics. In particular, pay attention to the numerical examples and the “Self-Check Questions” at the end of each section.

https://open.umn.edu/opentextbooks/Images/1938168240.pngTaylor, T. (2014) Microeconomics. OpenStax College. http://cnx.org/contents/6i8iXmBj@10.174:WXgRcPaN@10/Introduction-to-a-Monopoly

Finally, read this slightly more advanced chapter. Pay special attention to the sections at the end on game theory and the “Policy Response to Oligopoly” section that covers the Herfindahl index:

Module 3 – SLP

MARKET STRUCTURE AND GAME THEORY

For this assignment, you will be building upon your Module 2 SLP by continuing to examine other businesses in your chosen industry. Remember that the other businesses you wrote about in your Module 2 SLP will be your future competitors if you decide to open your own business. So it is important to get an idea of the competitive landscape of your chosen business. After reviewing the required background readings and doing some more research on your chosen industry, write a three-page paper discussing the following issues:

  1. What market structure is there for this line of business in your home town? Is this a monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, or perfect competition? Justify your answer using both your own research on this type of business in your home town, and by referencing some of the required background readings on different types of market structures.
  2. Now that you have examined market structure of your chosen industry in your home town, do some research on IBIS World on market structure in this industry nationwide. You can access IBIS World by going to the main TLC Portal and clicking on “Additional Library Resources”. A link to IBIS World will come up. This direct link might also work if you are already logged onto the Trident online library. What information could you find regarding how concentrated or how competitive this industry is?
  3. Based on the information you found for Question 2, what market structure do you think best describes this industry nationwide? Is this a monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition, or perfect competition? Explain your answer using both information from IBIS World and the concepts from the required background readings.

Unit 7: Natural Born Celebrities Reading

Instructions

Please choose one of the following questions to answer for this unit by Wednesday at 11:59pm (CST). You should also respond to two of your classmates’ postings by Sunday at 11:59pm (CST).

Before answering this unit’s questions, you should read Schmid’s Natural Born Celebrities, “The Victorian Killer as Media Star: Jack the Ripper and H.H. Holmes, p. 31.

Keep in mind, as you read the text, a few of the questions posted below.

Rubric

Online discussions will be graded according to the following rubric.

Full-bodied entries—of at least ten sentences of writing from you (in addition to quotations from the text)—are more likely to receive full credit. Lesser credit will be assigned to work that is missing, brief, or clearly disengaged or sloppily produced such that miscues interfere with readability.

Your responses to other students’ work are also assessed. Students often resist commenting on each others’ work in substantial ways; instead choosing to post simply “good job” or “looks okay to me.” This kind of peer response doesn’t help your own—or your peers’—development as a writer and thinker.

Acceptable peer responses will, among other things:

  • Explicitly identify what was learned from someone else’s work.
  • Ask a follow-up question.
  • Offer an alternative interpretation.
  • Offer concrete strategies for improvement.

Points

Criteria

18-20

Discussion posts are completed on-time; they not only thoughtfully respond to and incorporate course readings when appropriate, but they evidence creative thinking and make a significant contribution to peers’ understanding of the course topics. Moreover, follow-up posts/peer responses clarify and extend the class conversation, demonstrating critical thinking.

16-17

Discussion posts are essentially complete and incorporate, when appropriate, excerpts from the course readings. Initial post is made by due date, and follow-up posts/peer responses engage others in continued discussion.

11-15

Discussion posts are incomplete, inaccurate, and/or late. Peer response is present but perfunctory, offering little “back” to enhance peers’ understanding.

1-10

Posts and peer responses are not made to all topic threads.

0

No posts are made, or posts are entered after the unit’s discussion has ended.

Questions (Reading)

Choose one questions to answer:

  1. At first glance there is little to connect Joe Goldberg (in our novel this week) and Jack the Ripper, but Schmid portrays the panic and fascination with the Ripper as something that the media created. On p. 33, Schmid describes the public panic in 1888 when Jack the Ripper stalked and killed his victims as motivated by the media. Is our fear of Joe the same as a Victorian Londonite’s fear of the Ripper? Or is our fascination with serial killers dramatically different in the 21st century? Give specific media examples or points from our novel this week to detail why or why not.
  2. Schmid details the fact that much of our own knowledge of the Ripper is taken from “dime novels” written just after the murders. These books were excessive, romantic, Gothic depictions of a monster. Using specific examples from our text this week, show me whether or not You is a “dime novel” reveling in gratuitous description of a murderer or in real life danger.
  3. Much of Schmid’s chapter discusses the ties between Jack the Ripper and nationality, specifically his “Englishness” or his foreignness, depending upon the choice of suspects. Take a note from Schmid and describe the ways You is an American serial killer novel. What aspects of our society or national identity appear to be tied with serial killer media in the 21st century or with the consumption of violence overall?

: Comprehensive Client Family Assessment

Demographic information: This covers the characteristics of a population. Some of the characteristics examined are race, ethnicity, gender, age, education, profession, occupation, income level and marital status (Mabey, 2015). Juan Hernandez is a 45-year-old Mexican male a married to Elena Hernandez who is also a 43-year-old Mexican lady. (Not real client names)

Presenting problem: This refers to the initial symptoms that lead someone to seek help from a doctor or other provider (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The Juan Hernandez as the head of his family is seeking counseling to address his frustrations and worries he experiences, parenting his children. He is accompanied by his wife Elena who is encouraging him to seek help because she is stressed out as well. He expressed feeling anxious, depressed, and angry most times which makes him harsh to his children. He is also worried that he might have inherited some traits from his parents on hard parenting methods.

History or present illness: Juan Hernandez reports having an anger outburst since middle school which was never evaluated and treated because it was “normal” for his family. He reports that the feelings resurfaced after he started feeling stressed out and frustrated with his children. They have no serious, severe illness as well.

Past psychiatric history: Juan Hernandez has never been diagnosed with any mental health problem.Hence, the client has had no case of mental illness other than the current instance of uncontrolled anger, anxiety, and depression. His wife Elena has no mental health history.

Medical history: Juan Hernandez was recently diagnosed with hypertension and he reports that his father is hypertensive as well. Elena his wife has no medical problems.

Substance use history: Juan Hernandez denies any use of illegal drugs. There are no substance use incidences in the past of Juan or Elena.

Developmental history refers to a person’s growth. Both clients have not reported any case of developmental complications. Juan and Elena were born full term and grew normally.

Family psychiatric history refers to cases of any mental illness in the family and relatives of the clients. Juan has not reported any cases of family psychological history. Despite the fact that Juan’s parents were hard on him with angry tones most times, they were never diagnosed with mental health problems. Elena as well has not reported any case of family physiological history.

Psychosocial history, this is the client’s background on matters relating to the interrelation of social factors and individual thought and behavior. Juan is a construction worker and has few friends that he chats with occasionally.

History of abuse/trauma refers to cases of repeated treatment of an individual in cruelty or violence (Wheeler, 2014). Juan has had instances of trauma out of violence treatment from both his parents. This made him hate schooling and hence become severely affected. Something that he is worried might happen as well to his family. Elena expresses no history of trauma.

Review of systems, this is a technic used by healthcare providers for eliciting a medical history from a patient (Mabey, 2015). Juan reported general fatigue and difficulties sleeping at night. Neurologic; dizziness sometimes. Gastrointestinal: decreased appetite and constipation. Psychiatric; stress and depression. Elena ROS; General: Neurologic: No issues reported. Gastrointestinal heartburn and constipation

Physical assessment refers to the structured examination perform by any health provider to collect the complete data about a patient. In this assessment, the provider used observation, inspection, palpation, auscultation, and percussion. Juan proved to be physically fit and no case of complications as well as Elena.

The mental status exam is the evaluation of the individual’s current mental capacity through the evaluation of general appearance, behavior, any great belief and perception, mood and all aspects of cognition. Juan is alert, and oriented x3, neatly groomed, has appropriate affect and mood, speech clear and coherent and sufficient cognition noted. No sign of abnormality noted. Elena’s mental state also proved to be fit as well. Juan and Elena deny suicidal and homicidal ideations.

Differential diagnosis, this refers to the process of distinguishing a particular disease or disorder from the others that share similar clinical features. Juan was evaluated to have generalized anxiety with anger symptoms, a Depressive disorder associated with insomnia and decreased appetite, and lastly hypertension.

Case formulation means problems formulation that involved a theoretically based explanation of the information obtained from a clinical assessment (Mabey, 2015). Juan presented a problem of being too angry, and this problem was contributed by trauma that he had as a child from his parent’s punishment when they were angry. The client has been in this state by repetition of the same situations. The client has access to the medical care as a way of accessing health. Elena presented her situation as being stressed by Juan actions and fearful attitudes of their children.

Treatment plan involves guidelines for helpful ways of ensuring that the client has been saved from the disorder shown (Young, & Solomon, 2009). Juan is an intelligent man the clinic will support him by offering psychoeducation. The interventions involve talk therapy, client will explore feelings and coping skills in life situations, explore measures of self-control and remain safe, be able to express self calmly without anger, develop holistic self-care to manage life stressors, explore his experiences and how they impact his relation to himself and others and how it contributes to experienced anxiety and, explore sleep hygiene ways to improve sleep. Juan and Elena will explore helpful and good parenting strategies to help guide their children upbringing.

  • French and Raven

Assignment: Applying French and Raven’s Bases of Social Power: A Powerful Solution

There have been many stories throughout history of leaders who have been corrupted by their power. The very definition of leadership as “a process by which an individual influences the group to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2016, p. 6) implies the power to exert influence. Leaders must exert power in order to lead, but they must also strive to understand the complexities of power. Research by French and Raven (1959) and by others (Burns, 1976; Neck & Manz, 1994) provides insight on the types, or bases, of power available to a leader, the process of choosing among those bases, and the motivations for leaders’ choices (Northouse, 2016, p. 379). Recent researchers (Barbuto & Warneke, 2014; Vevere, 2014) also explore the effectiveness of using individual bases of power in particular situations and the effects certain bases of powers have on leaders and those they lead. Armed with this information, leaders can avoid utilizing certain bases of power when the choice may lead to negative consequences. They can instead choose to wield power in ways that will foster organizational success. Understanding the bases also gives both leaders and followers insight into situations they observe and difficult interpersonal interactions they negotiate.

To prepare for this Assignment, consider Case Study 7.1, “His Team Gets the Best Assignments” on pages 150–151 of Northouse (2016).

    By Day 7

Submit a 3-page analysis of the case study. In your analysis, do the following:

    • Identify two of French and Raven’s bases of power in the case study, and explain how leaders can use these bases of power to exert influence.
    • Explain how you might use your knowledge of French and Raven’s theory to resolve one of the problems presented in the case study. Justify your response.

    Literature Review

    Due Date: Jul 29, 2018 23:59:59 Max Points: 100

    Details:

While the implementation plan prepares students to apply their research to the problem or issue they have identified for their capstone change proposal project, the literature review enables students to map out and move into the active planning and development stages of the project.

A literature review analyzes how current research supports the PICOT, as well as identifies what is known and what is not known in the evidence. Students will use the information from the earlier PICOT Statement Paper and Literature Evaluation Table assignments to develop a 750-1,000 word review that includes the following sections:

    1. Title page
    2. Introduction section
    3. A comparison of research questions
    4. A comparison of sample populations
    5. A comparison of the limitations of the study
    6. A conclusion section, incorporating recommendations for further research

Submit a paper that identifies and examines two distinct types of sentinel events that frequently occur in healthcare organizations

Submit a paper that identifies and examines two distinct types of sentinel events that frequently occur in healthcare organizations. The error types that you select must be significantly different; for example, patient suicide and wrong-site surgery.

In writing this paper, you should consider and address (as necessary) the following:

    • Identify, compare, and contrast the system factors that influence organizational performance.
    • Identify, compare, and contrast the processes and techniques that can be used to investigate, prevent, and control these types of events now and in the future.
    • Identify, compare, and contrast the measures that can be used to assess the performance of the organization and the risk management plan in this area as it relates to patient safety.

Your paper should be well-written and meet the following requirements:

    • Eight to 10 pages in length.
    • Include at least six references from the peer-reviewed articles. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find peer-reviewed articles.
    • Conforms to CSU-Global Guide to Writing & APA.

    Current Environmental Analysis

    GRADING RUBRIC MUST BE FOLLOWED

ANY OUTSIDE REFERENCES USED MUST BE WITHIN THE PAST 5 YEARS

In 3–5 pages, analyze the current environment of a selected health care organization.

    Questions to Consider:

    • How does the analytical model of strategic management compare with the emergent learning model in health care?
    • What are some examples of analytical strategies in a small health care organization? How do they differ from large organizations?
    • What is the analytical strategy within your own health care organization?

    Preparation

Choose a health care organization. This may be an organization where you currently work, where you desire to work, or one about which you would like to learn more. You may select one from any of these sectors (or select a sector not listed here that directly reflects your career plans).

    • Long-term care.
    • Mid-sized facility.
    • Behavioral health hospital.
    • Large urban hospital.
    • Small rural hospital.
    • Freestanding facility.
    • Telehealth organization.
    • Government/military integrated delivery network (IDN).

    Conduct an Environmental Analysis

Analyze your health care organization’s current environment using tools included in the strategic management planning process. The purpose of this analysis is to scan the both the internal and external environments so that you can identify current challenges and opportunities in preparation for the future.

Note: You may use any contemporary environmental analysis tool to conduct your analysis (for example, PESTL analysis, Michael Porter’s 5 forces model, Levels of competition model).

In order to complete the analysis you will need to examine both the internal and external environments. Your analysis must include the following:

    • Identify key structural features of the industry that determine the forces governing competition.
    • Discuss the goals and strategies of the respective competitive forces.
    • Examine the organization’s directional strategy, including its vision, mission, and values.
    • Determine the organization’s positioning approach at this point in time.
    • Summarize your insights and findings related to the current challenges and opportunities faced by your selected organization at the time of your analysis.
    • Include references to peer-reviewed sources that support your analysis. Examples of these sources could be accrediting body standards, industry standards, government agency reports (for example, National Academy of Medicine, et cetera) as well as organizational information.
    • Cite your sources using current APA guidelines.
