Criminology

Individual Portion

  • Search the library and the Internet and research a problem solving court (i.e. drug court, veterans court, teen court, re-entry court or homeless court)
  • Each team member will address the following in 250-500 words individually:
    • Generally speaking, what are some of the criminological theories that serve as a foundation for these specialty courts? Explain.
    • You have been tasked to create a new problem solving court that addresses a special type of offender. Discuss the components of the court and its approach to dealing with these special offenders based upon criminological thought.
    • Remember to post your submission as soon as possible in order to allow enough time to complete the Group Portion of the project.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style.
  • What will be the most challenging element of cognitive restructuring in this case? Explain. In a 3 point slide show from this paper made seperatly.
  • While reviewing problem solving courts, I have found that their foundation is to develop programs that could help criminals find the root of their problem and plan to rehabilitate themselves. Each court has their own techniques in providing help to criminals. These courts usually focus on certain components with the first being 1) a nonadversarial judicial process where the offender confesses to the crime, 2) immediate intervention that focuses on outcomes, 3) intensive interaction between the judge and the offender, 4) an interdisciplinary team approach that might include psychological and social workers who will coordinate services for the offender, and 5) a set of clearly defined rules and goals. The ultimate goal is to keep them from being incarcerated. Teen Court was my favorite to read about. They try to help teens to assume responsibility for their behavior by using the five components above in a specific problem solving court depending on the area of the offender’s crime. Within Teen Court, Bully Court could be set up to only deal with offenders who have committed a crime that involves the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of bullying. Bully Court would be a type of problem solving court that deals with bullies and why they resort to aggressive behavior towards others. Two different criminological theories that would serve as a foundation of Bully Court would be the Psychological Theory and the Sociological Theory. After the defendant confesses to the crime and goes before the judge, an immediate intervention would be set up that would include various members of a team that would select services and define rules that need to be followed and to set specific goals that must be attained. This might include sending the defendant to counseling, group therapy, and/or anger management classes. Then, the offender would need to undergo certain testing. This would include psychological testing to look for a personality disorder, an emotional maladjustment, and/or a particular psychological trait that attributes to the bullying. It could also be necessary to have social psychological testing to look for certain behavior issues, lack of self-discipline, and cognitive issues in a group setting. After meeting with the judge in the Bully Court and testing is complete, an interdisciplinary team will be set up to provide services. A plan will then be put in place that sets up the goals the defendant must meet and the rules that the defendant must follow. The goals could include things like doing community service, group meetings with a counselor and other bullies, listening and viewing to victim statements, or other methods of trying to atone for their crime because they need to make amends and continue to prove that this type of intervention has helped them to become a better member of society and somehow proven that the journey that led them down the path to committing a crime of physical, mental, and emotional abuse to others will be from this day forward altered.

Health Services Organization

As indicated in the Research Activity, out of 200 applicants, you were selected to work as the manager in the research department for a special task force with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Review the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov. Your first assignment with the special task force is to focus on Opioid Overdose. The CDC reports that from 1999 to 2015, more than 183,000 people died in the U.S. from overdose related to prescription opioids.

The CDC has been researching the impact of opioid overdose to protect the public’s health and prevent opioid overdose deaths using surveillance and research. Your focus is two primary areas: 1) opioid prescribing guidelines for physicians, and 2) ways hospitals can create prescription drug monitoring as a part of their Quality Management Department (seehttps://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/index.html).

The CDC sent you to a local hospital, and based on your Research Activity, you were asked to provide the hospital leaders with a 10-slide PowerPoint to explain your research findings and to include a SWOT analysis. Your research skills used to create a SWOT analysis is based on Chapter 3 in the textbook and from the Research Exercise. SWOT stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; this analysis tool can be used to identify forces that can potentially help or harm the healthcare organization. Review the SWOT examples in Figures 1 and 2; listen to the Week 1 Lecture in Blackboard, and review the video on SWOT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_6AVRGLXGA.

Your 10-slide SWOT PowerPoint should follow this format:

  1. Slide 1 should be a cover page;
  2. Slide 2 is the background;
  3. Slides 3-9 should have a Thesis Statement and follow the SESC formula: State, Explain, Support, and Conclude; and
  4. Slide 10 is the reference page and should contain at least three (3) quality peer-reviewed references in SWS format. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as quality resources.
  1. This course requires use of new Student Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details.

Week 3 Assignment: Source Organization Worksheet

During week 2, you were introduced to an organizational tool to help you track and evaluate sources as you found them during the research phase of your project. If you did not download the Word document or the spreadsheet, please do so now. Before you begin please review the Lesson material from Week 2 on Scholarly Sources.

Part 1 Worksheet

For your final project, you will need to collect a minimum of 4 Scholarly Sources. These 4 Scholarly Sources must:

  • Relate to the research questions you posed in your Week 2 concept map or outline.
  • Make connections between your scholarly resources and your research topic—(Please note: you are building toward your project with each assignment in this course).

When you have logged at least 4 Scholarly Sources, fill out the Source Organizational Worksheet and include:

  • The bibliographical information as Given in the worksheet, AND
  • Summarize the source in your own words with proper grammar and spelling

Then attach the document to the assignment submission.

Part 2 Paragraph Submission

In the textbox space, draft a 4-5 sentence paragraph with proper grammar and spelling, describing:

  • Your source search process And
  • How these sources might be useful in creating your final presentation about a career interest.

Once you have completed Part 1 and Part 2 you can formally submit your assignment submission for grading.

WEEK 2:

PART 1: Choose a career interest topic for your final project due later in the course. Your career interest topic should be realistic and one that you are actually interested in learning more about. The career interest might be a field in which you could become employed after completing your APUS degree program or additional training. Using your career interest topic, create a concept map OR an outline to define the task in your research process. Use the process of outlining or mapping the topic for your final project so that you can focus your topic and determine the nature and types of information you will need later in our course. This assignment is a brainstorming activity, not a research task.In your outline OR concept map, include the following:One (1) topic sentence stating which career interest/discipline you will exploreFour (4) or more specific, critical thinking questions about your career interest that can be later answered through source searching and presented in your final projectFor each question, two or more supporting detail statements that describe the type of information needed to answer the question (the actual answers are not yet needed)For each detail statement or statement pair, a description of what kinds of sources might be helpful in providing the information you needFormat appropriately designed for either an outline or concept mapFormal, detailed outlines are useful organizational strategies–the more detail you include, the easier the final project will come together. If you choose to use an outline, it must be very detailed. Consider searching outlining strategies and designs.Concept maps can be developed through one of several available websites:CMAP Tools http://cmap.ihmc.us This tool allows you to move between devices.https://bubbl.us/ This site allows concept map creation and has a companion app.http://www.smartdraw.com/specials/ppc/mind-map-sof… This site includes a free trial.http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Mai… mind mapping software.Gliffy http://www.gliffy.comX-mind https://www.xmind.netMindmeister https://www.mindmeister.comMindmoto http://www.mindomo.comPART 2: Write one paragraph (5-6 sentences) describing the information you listed in your concept map. Your paragraph should describe the career interest topic you chose, the questions you will answer in your project, the types of information needed to answer those questions, and your predictions of source types you might need.SUBMITTING YOUR ASSIGNMENT:PART 1—Your Concept Map or Outline should be submitted as a .doc, .docx, .jpg, .pdf as appropriate for the document you have created. The document should be attached to your assignment submission.PART 2—Your paragraph should be pasted into the submission textbox in the assignment area.Once you have attached the concept map or outline and pasted your paragraph into the window, click “submit” to send this assignment to your instructor for grading and feedback.

Budget Simulation Essay

2. Complete and submit Writing Assignment 2 (worth up to 10 points).

This assignment involves a budget simulation, with the goal of this activity being to allow you to make some budget revenue and expenditure choices based on the economic theories you read about in Week 2 and assess the political impacts of those choices based on the Week 3 readings.

Step 1: Go to the Budget Simulation (http://crfb.org/stabilizethedebt/) by clicking on the highlighted link.

Step 2: Read through the brief introduction and then “play” the game. There are several revenue and expenditure options, so be sure to move through all of the pages to make your choices (you may move forward and backward and click on the “i” notations for more information on any topic). Remember, you have the role of a legislator who needs to consider the impact of choices on all of the citizens and the economy as well as (and perhaps more importantly) the constituents who vote for you. Read through the questions below before completing the simulation to develop your strategies.

Step 3: Develop written responses to the following questions. In your responses, offer specific examples in the choices you made to demonstrate how you applied various course concepts. You can write your responses to each question individually (double spaced, and use APA formatting for citations and references); you do not need to write a cohesive essay. Include appropriate connections to the course readings and additional research. Your submission should be 2-3 pages.

  1. Discuss the economic theory or theories (i.e., laissez-faire, mercantilism, Keynesian view, and/or the supply-side view – from the Week 2 readings) that influenced your choices and/or retrospectively, most closely represented your choices. Address how your choices were guided by particular perspective(s) and what the possible outcomes of your choices might be on the economy.
  2. To what extent did you consider the “political” impacts of your choices as you were deciding which revenue sources to add and which expenditure categories to cut? Offer an explanation/examples of the ways in which those “political” impacts influenced your choices. Consider the ideas raised in Swain & Reed Chapter 5.
  3. At which point in the budget process might some of the changes (discuss at least two examples) you made in this simulation be addressed and/or implemented? [Hint: Refer to Swain & Reed Chapter 4.]
  4. Were you ultimately able to stabilize the national debt at the game goal of 60% of the GDP (you will not lose points if you were not able to stabilize the debt; the goal is to make the ‘best’ choices in your opinion)? Offer an explanation as to why you feel you were (or were not) able to achieve the goal.

Deontological or utilitarian theory

In the Week One Assignment, you formulated a concrete ethical question, took a position on that topic, and identified a reason supporting and a reason opposing that position. In the Week Three Assignment, you discussed either deontological or utilitarian theory, applied that theory to the question, and raised a relevant objection.

By engaging with the course material, you now have had a chance to
refine your thinking and broaden your understanding of the problem by
approaching it from the perspective of multiple ethical theories.

In this paper, you will demonstrate what you have learned by writing an essay in which you

  • Present a revised formulation of the ethical question and introduction to the topic.
  • Explain the kind of reasoning you think is the best way to approach
this question, and how that reasoning supports the position you think is
    strongest.
  • Raise an objection, and be able to respond to it.

Instructions

Write an essay that conforms to the requirements below. The paper must
be 1500 to 2000 words in length (excluding the title and reference
pages) and formatted according to APA style.

  • Introduction
Your first paragraph should begin with
the topic question, suitably revised. It should be focused, concrete,
and on a relevant moral problem. You should then introduce the topic in
the way described by the Week One instructions, but reflecting the
developed understanding and information you have gained about the topic
and any necessary refinement of the scope.

    Follow this with a
thesis statement that states your position, and a brief description of
the primary reason(s) supporting your position. Finally, provide a brief preview of the overall aim and procedure of your paper.

  • Explanation and Demonstration of Moral Reasoning
    This
section of the Final Paper will explain and demonstrate what you
believe to be the best way of reasoning about the question you have
chosen, and showing how that reasoning supports the position you have
taken on the question. You might explain the principles, rules, values,
virtues, conceptions of purposes and ends, and other general ideas that
you find persuasive, and show how they support concrete judgments.

    In
the course of doing so, you must make reference to at least two of the
approaches that we have examined in the course (such as deontological,
utilitarian, or virtue-based), and utilize at least one resource off the
provided list for each of the two approaches. One of these theories may
be the theory you discussed in your Week Three Assignment, but your
discussion here should be more refined.

    For example, you might
find the reasoning associated with Aristotelian virtue ethics to be the
most compelling, and reference Aristotle in the process of showing how
that reasoning supports a certain conclusion. In the course of this, you
could contrast that with a utilitarian approach, referencing Mill for
    instance.

  • Objection and Response
    After explaining the ethical
reasoning that supports your position, you should raise an objection and
respond to it. An objection articulates a plausible reason why someone
might find the argument weak or problematic. You should explain how it
brings out this weakness, and do so in a way that would be acceptable to
someone who disagrees with your own argument. Then, provide the best
response you can to the objection, showing how it does not undermine
your position. Your response should not simply restate your original
position or argument, but should say something new in support of it.
  • Conclusion
Provide a conclusion that sums up what you presented in the paper and offers some final reflections.

Resource Requirement
You must use at least four scholarly resources. Two of the resources must be drawn from the list of acceptable primary resources
(See attached file) on each of the two theories you discuss. For example, if you discuss
deontology and virtue ethics, you would need at least one resource under
the “Deontology” list and at least one resource under the “Virtue
Ethics” list. The other two may be from either the Required or
Recommended Resources, or scholarly resources found in the Ashford
University Library.

  • The textbook may be cited, but it does not count toward the resource
requirement. If you cite the textbook, you will still need to cite at
least four more sources that fulfill the requirements stated above.
  • If you need help with finding additional resources, or are unsure
about whether a particular resource will count toward the requirement,
    please contact your instructor.
  • For sources to count toward the resources requirement, they must be
cited within the text of your paper and on the reference page. Sources
that are listed on the references page, but not cited within the paper,
do not count toward fulfilling the resources requirement.

Rough Draft of Final Paper

In this course, we look at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism,
deontology, and virtue ethics. We also examine different perspectives on
ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For
this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue,
selected from the list of issues below.

Choose one of the ethical issues from the list to research and write about. It
is recommended that you choose a topic that you are familiar with or that you
have thought about previously, if possible. For example, you might choose an
issue that either worries you or enrages you, you might choose one that you
have worked on, or you might choose one that relates to recent events in your
community.

Possible Issues

  • Corporate executive compensation
  • Corporate contributions to political campaigns
  • Affirmative action
  • The media and its responsibilities
  • Domestic surveillance
  • Whistle blowing in government or in a business
  • Religion in the workplace
  • Pornography
  • Consumer tracking
  • Ethical problems of gambling
  • Progressive taxation rates
  • Immigration
  • Women’s equality

In your paper, you will apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the
issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at
least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper.
Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get
distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or
legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and
perspectives to the topics. Explain how the theories and perspectives would
analyze the issue. What are the ethical issues? Where are there breaches of
ethical behavior? How could each theory help us think about what would
constitute virtuous or ethical behavior?

Your draft must include at least three pages of text, plus a title page and a
reference page. Your draft should include a clear thesis statement that states
what you plan to argue. Also, include a list of the resources you intend to
use. Format your rough draft according to APA (6th edition) style and properly
cite and reference all your resources, using APA format. If you would like to
refer to APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within
the Learning Resources tab in the left navigation bar

Option #2: How to Deal with a Project that is Off Course

Option #2: How to Deal with a Project that is Off Course

There are many examples of projects that have gone off course. Often times, a new project manager is brought in if the situation is dire. For this assignment, find a project that did not stay on scope, time, or budget. Then, determine what project management principles were not followed for the project. Lastly, suggest how you, as a newly selected project manager, would make changes to ensure the project got back on track.

Examples of recent projects off course would include:

Your paper should be 2-to-3-pages, well written and in conformity with the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements for style and writing expectations. Include a title page and a reference page that includes at least two outside references (not including your textbook) to support your analysis.

Another Assignment are you ready

When looking for information about a particular issue, how often do you try to resist confirmation bias by seeking out sources that might contradict your own point of view?

This assignment asks you to engage in this aspect of critical thinking.

This assignment is divided into two (2) parts.

In Part I of the assignment, you will read a book excerpt about critical thinking processes, review one (1) Website in order to gather information, and engage in pre-writing to examine your thoughts.

In Part II of the assignment, you will write an essay geared towards synthesizing your ideas. As author E.M. Forster said, “How do I know what I think until I see what I say?”

Part I Preparation and Pre-writing:

Follow the steps below to explore an issue through reading and writing –

1. Read “The Believing Game and How to Make Conflicting Opinions More Fruitful” by Peter Elbow at http://www.procon.org/sourcefiles/believinggame.pdf. Devise strategies for playing the “Believing Game” and the “Doubting Game,” which are discussed in the Elbow article. According to the article, “the doubting game represents the kind of thinking most widely honored and taught. It’s the disciplined practice of trying to be as skeptical and analytic as possible with every idea we encounter. The believing game is the mirror image of the doubting game or critical thinking. It’s the disciplined practice of trying to be as welcoming as possible to every idea we encounter.”

2. Select one (1) of the issues from ProCon.org that your professor has approved as a topic choice for your essay. Go to www.procon.org, scroll to the list of issues, click on the issue you selected, and read the background information section on the issue.

a. To play the “Believing Game,” read either the Pro section

or the Con section on the www.procon.org Website – whichever argument is in opposition to your position on the chosen issue. Consider at least three (3) of the premises (reasons) listed in that section. Apply the “believing” questions suggested by Elbow, such as “What’s interesting or helpful about the view? What would you notice if you believed this view? … In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

b. To play the “Doubting Game,” read either the Pro column

or the Con column on the www.procon.org Website – whichever argument is in agreement with your position. Consider at least three (3) of the premises (reasons) listed in that section. Apply the “doubting” questions suggested by Elbow, such as the journalistic questions who, what, when, where, why, how.

Synthesizing and Writing: Part II

Now that you have examined your thinking about an issue by pre-writing about your ideas –

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

1. Present an argument on an issue by stating your conclusion and identifying your premises.

2. Identify three (3) premises of the argument in

opposition to your conclusion, and describe your reactions to these premises, based on the believing questions suggested by Elbow, such as

“What’s interesting or helpful about the view? What would you notice if you believed this view? In what sense or under what conditions might this idea be true?”

3. Identify three (3) premises of the argument in agreement with your conclusion, and explain your responses to the journalistic questions you asked in order to probe these premises, based on the doubting questions suggested by Elbow, such as the journalistic questions who, what, when, where, why, and how.

4. Examine at least three (3) types of biases that you likely experienced when you read the premises on the Pro side of the argument and the premises on the Con side of the argument. (

5. Describe whether or not your position on the issue has changed. Indicate whether or not your premises supporting the issue have changed. Explain why or why not.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

 Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.

ASSIGNMENT 2: CHALLENGES IN THE BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT, PT 1

WeeDue Week 9 and worth 330 points

As you have explored in this course, ongoing challenges in the global business environment are mostly attributed to unethical business practices, failure to embrace technology advancements, and stiff competition among businesses. Imagine that you have been appointed as the Chief Compliance Officer of a Fortune 500 company of your choice and must prepare a presentation for your suppliers regarding your Supplier Code of Conduct to deliver via a web meeting.

This assignment has two parts. For the first part, you are to create a five to seven (5–7) minute dynamic video on your company’s Code of Conduct. You may use any type of recording device you have to create this video—smartphone, laptop, webcam, or other type of video recorder. The specific points to cover for this video are listed below.

As an alternative to the video, you may submit a four to six (4–6) page paper that details what you would say in such a presentation following the same prompts as the video assignment below.

For the second part of the assignment, you will create a presentation using PowerPoint (or other equivalent software) summarizing the important changes and explanations regarding the code of conduct that you communicated in your video/paper presentation to email to the suppliers after the meeting for future reference. The specific points to cover are listed below.

You must submit both parts of the assignment to receive full credit.

Note: If you are using a tablet or smartphone you will need to email the video file to yourself, then save it to a computer in order to upload to Blackboard. You may want to upload your video to a file sharing service, such as Dropbox, if your email will not let you send a large video file. Dropbox is accessible from all smartphones and tablets from the Dropbox app.

Once you are ready to upload your video to Blackboard, view the Kaltura video tutorial found in your online course shell (Week 9). Please use the following naming convention in the popup window for your video once it is finished uploading:

Part 1: Video Presentation OR Paper
Prepare and present a video that is a maximum of five to seven (5–7) minutes OR write a four to six (4–6) page paper in which you:

  1. List specific changes that your company has made to its Code of Conduct in recent years. Provide at least one (1) example of each change.
  2. Explain the identified changes to the suppliers in such a way that they will understand the standards that your company requires in order to maintain their relationship with the company.

If you choose the written paper instead of the video, your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Specific Library Resources to help you get started

The Strayer University Library is accessible at research.strayer.edu.

A general introduction to the Strayer Library is available in your course shell on the left-hand menu under Research-Library.

  • Introductory Search – Use the home page’s search box to keyword search many, but not all, databases.
  • Targeted Search – Scroll to the bottom of the page for an A to Z listing of all databases. Float over each link to see a description of the database and click to load that particular database’s custom search page. Custom search pages include both basic and advanced search options.

These databases are only partially searchable through the general search bar. You will have to search them individually to find resources for your paper.

  • Nexis Uni – This contains legal information and would be useful to search for court cases in which your company has been involved.
  • Video Explaining Nexis Uni
  • Mergent Online – This has company info on both public and private companies. Fortune 500 can be public or private. Mergent is known for financial and accounting info, but also has qualitative information too. They offer news feeds, country reports on business environments, industry-wide reporting, company reports, and Annual Reports—the middle 3 are unique to this database. Starting with looking at a company’s annual report would be very useful for this assignment. Industry reports would also be useful to see if your company is involved in any industry-wide initiatives or is notable in its industry in any way (could be good or bad.)
  • Instructional Videos on each of the databases:

American City Business Journals – This is probably the most fun way to read business news by metro area. They have over 35 journals based around US cities. Look up the metro area your company is associated with, go to ACBJ, then choose the applicable city, and search for news articles.

Research Starters are like the academic version of Wikipedia. Search on a topic to get an overview with links to other information within that topic. It will help you get ideas for keywords for your own searches and what you need to know in order to successfully write your paper.

Note – This is an exception example. Research Starter articles do appear in a feature box above the results list when using the general search box on research.strayer.edu.

Don’t stress over writing papers! Watch this video on writing papers and essays. Topics include how to start your research, how to organize your research, how to draft your paper, and how to revise it.
