Drama Paper: Mini-research paper (4-5 pages, Times Roman 12, double-spaced)

 In this paper, as in our previous assignments, you will be doing a close reading, but with two differences: (1) this paper asks you to examine two works and compare/contrast them, and (2) this paper requires research.  In this paper, you will compare and contrast Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll House.  Your larger purpose in comparing/contrasting them is to consider the concept of tragedy.  Your thesis should make an assertion about the nature of tragedy in both works.

 This paper will address the following questions:

• How are these two plays different?  Do these differences tell us something about the nature of tragedy?
• How are these two plays similar?  Do these similarities tell us something about the nature of tragedy, or about the difference between Shakespearean drama and “modern” theater?

In this assignment, you are confined to discussing these two plays, but within this framework, you are free to choose what order to address these questions in and how to create a thesis that focuses your discussion.  Feel free to emphasize comparison and de-emphasize contrast or vice-versa, as long as in some way you have done both.  Be sure to give equal time to both plays, however.

It is also up to you how to use research in this paper.  My recommendation is that you use it to bolster your discussion of tragedy, drawing from scholarly sources to create your definitions, but you may also want to use articles on the plays themselves to help with your readings.  This is fine, as long as the following conditions are met:

1. All sources must be cited correctly using MLA documentation.  This includes (1) in-text citations and (2) a Works Cited page.
2. You must use at least five sources.  There is no maximum: if you would like to include more sources, that’s fine, but since our objective is close reading, it’s definitely not necessary.

Length: This is a lot of material to cover in 4-5 pages.  This means you need to be very concise.  Do not go over five pages!  Less is more.

This paper must illustrate the perspectives of a specific person or group of people (e.g. freed slaves) within a historically marginalized population. For the purpose of this assignment, we define historically marginalized as people whose perspectives have not been represented in history texts until very recently. Discuss the person’s or group’s era and experiences in context of what was happening around them, prioritizing their experience rather than the established narratives of the dominant experience. Possible perspectives include those of Anne Hutchinson, Pocahontas, or Sojourner Truth.

This paper must include a discussion of the following topics:

• A thorough summary of the event, including the incidents that took place and the key individuals involved
• The importance of the event in the larger scope of U.S. history
• How the event changed the daily life of the person from whose perspective you are writing
• A prediction for how the event will make a long-term impact in the lives of those in the under-represented group from which the perspective is being written (keep in mind that this perspective should be written from the time at which the event took place).

• Consist of at least four full pages but no more than six pages
• Use at least five sources, including a scholarly journal article
• Please be sure to include a Reference Page in APA style with this assignment. Try to choose scholarly resources, focusing on primary sources whenever possible.
• Have an introduction and strong thesis
• Make use of historical evidence and examples supporting your thesis
• Finish with a forceful conclusion reiterating your main idea.

Envision that you work for a major, nationwide accounting firm. Your firm has many openings, and wants to recruit the most qualified accounting students. You’ve been asked to help recruit talent at several local universities. You begin the recruiting process with many of these accounting students via Facebook and LinkedIn. Once you have identified high-potential recruits, you organize several social events to get to know them better. You also hold several informative sessions about what it’s like to work at your firm and about what career paths are available. Since so many other firms are competing for the top recruits, the presentation about opportunities at your firm is critical. You want to make sure that your presentation is organized for maximum impact.

Use the six identified parts of a presentation to record a 2- to 3-minute video of yourself delivering a recruiting presentation.
