SOC308 WEEK 2 ASSIGNMENT

Ethnic Group Evaluation

By the mid-twentieth century, the European immigrant groups described in Week One had combined to form a white racial majority in the United States. Today, Blacks, Indigenous Americans, Asians, Hispanics, and non-white Europeans interact with the white majority in a system of race that can be broadly described as comprising whites and non-whites, whites and racial minorities, or whites and people of color. While unique ethnic groups share a culture in which ethnic conflict is present, including pressures to assimilate, the broader culture also celebrates the unique culture of many ethnic groups in America.

Write a paper in which you evaluate a selected major ethnic group in the United States. Please elaborate on the following points in your essay:

  1. Select and describe one of the following ethnic groups:
    • Black Americans
    • Hispanic Americans
    • Asian Americans
    • Indigenous Americans
    • White Americans
  2. Examine the history of this group in the United States, including the following:
    • Immigration
    • Contact with other ethnic groups
    • Assimilation or pluralism, and its connection to the group’s contact with other ethnic groups
    • Conflict with other ethnic groups
  3. Provide an example of a widely held myth or misconception about this ethnic group. How do we know this is a myth? Why is this myth so difficult to abandon?

Your paper must be three to four pages in length and utilize APA formatting and citations, including separate title and reference pages (neither of which counts towards the three-page requirement). In addition to the required readings, use at least two scholarly sources (one of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library) to support your points.

McGee Cake Company Mini Case

The McGee Cake Company
In early 2005, Doc and Lyn McGee formed the McGee Cake Company. The company produced a full line of cakes, and its specialties included chess cake*, lemon pound cake, and double-iced, double-chocolate cake. The couple formed the company as an outside interest, and both continued to work at their current jobs. Doc did all the baking, and Lyn handled the marketing and distribution. With good product quality and a sound marketing plan, the company grew rapidly. In early 2010, the company was featured in a widely distributed entrepreneurial magazine. Later that year, the company was featured in Gourmet Desserts, a leading specialty food magazine. After the article appeared in Gourmet Desserts, sales exploded, and the company began receiving orders from all over the world.
Because of the increased sales, Doc left his other job, followed shortly by Lyn. The company hired additional workers to meet demand. Unfortunately, the fast growth experienced by the company led to cash flow and capacity problems. The company is currently producing as many cakes as possible with the assets it owns, but demand for its cakes is still growing. Further, the company has been approached by a national supermarket chain with a proposal to put four of its cakes in all of the chain’s stores, and a national restaurant chain has contacted the company about selling McGee cakes in its restaurants. The restaurant would sell the cakes without a brand name.
Doc and Lyn have operated the company as a sole proprietorship. They have approached you to help manage and direct the company’s growth. Specifically, they have asked you to answer the following questions.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of changing the company
organization from a sole proprietorship to an LLC
What are the advantages and disadvantages of changing the company
organization from a sole proprietorship to a corporation
Ultimately, what action would you recommend the company undertake?
Why?

The Trickster Archetype and The Epic of Gilgamesh:

The assigned Vogler reading instructs on how to identify this specific archetype in a story and it provides many examples of it in other works, particularly cinematic narrative. Now that you’ve read The Epic of Gilgamesh in its entirety, which character (or, characters), best fits this archetype? Does only one trickster character exist, or, are there more? If more than one exists, who is the primary? Cite passages (use quotations and MLA parenthetical citations with page numbers) from both Vogler and The Epic of Gilgamesh to fully support your answer.

Government Dissemination Strategies

The ability to provide the public with information regarding terrorist groups, acts, and threats is critical to managing fear and anxiety. The importance of a carefully crafted message cannot be overstated. The government has many possible dissemination tools and sometimes the tool can dramatically affect the reception of the message. Proof of this became evident during the 2008 U.S. Presidential election where fundraising from the internet dwarfed conventional fundraising methods. The internet proved a more viable tool to communicate with the public. When communicating terrorist related information, it is critical to reach the target audience with the targeted message.

As you consider the different methods used to communicate terrorism information with the public, discuss the following:

Assignment Guidelines

  • In 4–6 paragraphs, address the following:
    • What are the most common communication mediums available to the government? Explain.
      • What do you think are the pros and cons of each? Explain.
    • What unconventional communication methods might the government leverage? Explain.
      • Why might these be appropriate tools for information dissemination? Explain.
    • The Department of Homeland Security currently uses a “Threat Level” system to communicate with the public regarding terrorism. Is this method effective?
      • How has the continued state of “yellow” or elevated alert desensitized the American public to the threats from terrorism? Is this justified?
      • What changes would you make to this system? Explain.
