Annotated Bibliography

Read the instructions for the final paper to determine the kinds of articles you will need to use as references. Also read the Example Research Proposal provided in the course materials to help you visualize your final paper. Search the Ashford University Library’s databases and the Research Methods research guide to find appropriate peer-reviewed sources for your proposal. Read the selected articles and reread relevant sections of the textbook and the full text of the study you have been working with throughout the course. Using the Sample Annotated Bibliography information and example from the Writing Center as a guide, create an annotated bibliography of the sources you will use in your final research proposal.

The references in the annotated bibliography must be listed in alphabetical order, formatted in APA style, and published within the past 10 years. All selected sources other than the textbook must be available in full text in the Ashford University Library. After each reference, insert two paragraphs. The first paragraph should summarize the main points of the source, in your own words. Do not use any quotations or verbatim wording from the source for this assignment. In the second paragraph, explain how you will use the source to support your research proposal.

For this assignment, a title page in APA format is required but it is not necessary to include a separate reference page, because the paper itself is the reference page with additional information inserted. If you do include a separate page of references, be aware that it will not be counted towards the required page count. Your paper must be a minimum of four pages (excluding title page) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

      Textual Analysis

      In this paper you have free range in how you interpret the texts you choose to write about and the topic you choose, but the structure I want you to use and steps I want you to take to construct the paper are fairly uniform—see this as a guideline to help you.

      Step 1: Choose TWO of the following texts from Unit 1 to write about:

      Gilgamesh Plato’s Allegory of the Cave

      Sophocles, Antigone

      Step 2: Choose ONE of the following topics to guide your reading of the texts you chose in step 1:

      Friendship The Experience of Being a Stranger/Outsider/ New to a place How Cultures Change or Government/Ruling Over Other People

      (Keep in mind that these topics can be interpreted in any number of ways—I’m looking for you to explain your own particular focus on the topic in relation to the two texts you choose.)

      Step 3: Title your paper—You will title your paper simply using the two texts and the topic you chose. For example:

      The Experience of Being an Outsider in Gilgamesh and Plato’s Parable of the Cave

      (Note how the title is capitalized and centered with no bolding or italics, except for the titles of the texts.)

      Step 4: Writing the paper itself. As you read, take careful notes on the texts to help you interpret them and find appropriate quotations to support your claims.

      See the next page for how to structure your paper. (Note: You can stray from this structure in your analysis, but know that you must have a good reason for doing so, and you may lose points if I find the structure isn’t effective. If you want to give your paper a different structure I highly recommend you email me about it ahead of time for my approval and support.)

      The structure of the paper should be the following:

      Introduction (1 paragraph/half a page): Explain how your topic is reflected in the two texts you chose, and how this topic can help us understand the texts in relation to each other (compare and/or contrast). (In other words, here you’re introducing the content of the paper by explaining why you chose this topic and these two texts—but remember to keep your language formal, as this is a formal paper!)

      Reading of Text 1 (2 paragraphs, about 1 page total or more): In one short paragraph you should briefly summarize the first text you intend to analyze. In a second, longer paragraph you should analyze this text in terms of the topic—this is a much longer, more in-depth explanation of what you introduced in the introduction. Use at least one (no more than two) quote to serve as evidence of what you’re seeing in the text. Make sure all quotes have a citation (page number at the end of the sentence) and are fully explained.

      Reading of Text 2 (2 paragraphs, about 1 page total or more): Same as you did with Text 1.

      Conclusion (1 paragraph/half a page): Recap, in detail, the comparison you’re making between these texts and then, the most important part, tell your reader what this comparison does for us. Does it help us understand something better? Does it help us understand something curious in one of the texts better? This is called answering the “So what?” question.

      When this is all done, your paper should be at least 2.5 pages. The best papers are usually at least 3 pages. Very thoroughly explained papers might reach to the bottom of the fourth page. Please don’t make your paper longer than 4 pages.

      A quick note on plagiarism: ANY words you write that are not your own, even if it’s a small phrase you found on the internet, MUST be put into quotation marks and cited. Outside research is not a component of this assignment, so I don’t want you to use outside sources, but in the past people have found it useful to turn to the internet to define the topic they’re using—this definition, unless you put it into your own words, MUST be put into quotation marks and cited. If you put the definition into your own words, you STILL MUST cite the source where you got it with a parenthetical at the end of the sentence (Miriam Webster).

      Plagiarism, no matter how minor, will NOT be tolerated in this class. Any and all forms of plagiarism WILL be reported.

      Discussion 1: Benefits of Group Therapy

      Group therapy is often utilized when treating substance abuse and addiction for a variety of reasons. Group therapy can provide a level of accountability not found in individual therapy. One form of accountability is the use of “sponsors,” a service that is typically not found in individual therapy. Therapy groups frequently include members who are at varying stages of recovery. This enables group members to interact with others in the therapy group who are struggling with similar issues. Those who are at later stages of recovery can see through the defenses (e.g., minimization, denial, and rationalization) that might be displayed by newer therapy group members. The relapse rates for substance abuse and addiction can be high, and, thus, the cost of treatment can be high. Group therapy provides a cost-effective treatment form by splitting the cost between multiple members.

      Sometimes watching something makes the content “come to life” in a way that reading does not. This week you get an opportunity to watch a movie that incorporates group therapy. More specifically, you analyze group therapy movies that are based on substance abuse or addiction.

      For this Discussion, review one of the suggested movies in this week’s Learning Resources. As you watch, notice how the therapy group might differ from other non-substance or addiction therapy groups. In addition, examine how the dynamics of the therapy group are therapeutic and how this process is different from individual therapy. In particular, keep Yalom’s therapeutic factors in mind, and see how they play out in the film’s therapy group.

      With these thoughts in mind:

      Post by Day 3 a brief description of the film you selected. Then, explain why group therapy is an effective treatment for substance abuse or addiction based upon what you saw in the film. Finally, explain which therapeutic factors might have the most benefit for people in group therapy for substance abuse or addiction.       Discussion 2: Experience and Effectiveness in Group Therapy

      How might clients feel if they discovered that their substance abuse therapist had no personal experience with substance abuse? Would they feel betrayed? Lied to? Would they even care? Therapy is an intensely personal journey, and it is important that clients trust their therapist to successfully guide them through the process.

      For this Discussion, review the media titled “Audio Therapist: Colleague Calling.” Think about how you might respond to your colleague on the phone. Consider the relationship between effectiveness as a therapy group leader and firsthand experience with the recovery process. Use your own words in clear terms, as though you are speaking directly to a colleague.

      During this course, you will analyze a Fortune 100 company. Each week, you will conduct research on your chosen company and address questions relevant to the week’s topics.

      This week, you will select the company that you will use throughout the course. Conduct a search in Google using the terms “Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For.” The first hit will be for Fortune Magazine’s Best 100 Companies (Money.CNN.com). Click on the link and you’ll see the top ten winners at the top of the page. You can select a company from the top ten, but you are welcome to use any company in the top 100. To access the entire list, click on “Access Full List.”

      Click on the company and read the summary. Following that, access the company’s website to read more about the company.

      For this week’s assignment, address the following:

      • Provide a brief summary (in your own words) of the company and explain what the company does.
      • Consider the degrees of competition that you learned about this week (perfect competition, monopolistic competition, oligopoly, and monopoly). Discuss which category your chosen company falls under. Be sure to justify your thoughts.

      Scenarios
      1. The p-value was slightly above conventional threshold, but was described as
      “rapidly approaching significance” (i.e., p =.06).
      An independent samples t test was used to determine whether student satisfaction
      levels in a quantitative reasoning course differed between the traditional classroom
      and on-line environments. The samples consisted of students in four face-to-face
      classes at a traditional state university (n = 65) and four online classes offered at
      the same university (n = 69). Students reported their level of satisfaction on a fivepoint
      scale, with higher values indicating higher levels of satisfaction. Since the
      study was exploratory in nature, levels of significance were relaxed to the .10 level.
      The test was significant t(132) = 1.8, p = .074, wherein students in the face-to-face
      class reported lower levels of satisfaction (M = 3.39, SD = 1.8) than did those in the
      online sections (M = 3.89, SD = 1.4). We therefore conclude that on average,
      students in online quantitative reasoning classes have higher levels of satisfaction.
      The results of this study are significant because they provide educators with
      evidence of what medium works better in producing quantitatively knowledgeable
      practitioners.

      2. A results report that does not find any effect and also has small sample size
      (possibly no effect detected due to lack of power).
      A one-way analysis of variance was used to test whether a relationship exists
      between educational attainment and race. The dependent variable of education
      was measured as number of years of education completed. The race factor had
      three attributes of European American (n = 36), African American (n = 23) and
      Hispanic (n = 18). Descriptive statistics indicate that on average, European
      Americans have higher levels of education (M = 16.4, SD = 4.6), with African
      Americans slightly trailing (M = 15.5, SD = 6.8) and Hispanics having on average
      lower levels of educational attainment (M = 13.3, SD = 6.1). The ANOVA was not
      significant F (2,74) = 1.789, p = .175, indicating there are no differences in
      educational attainment across these three races in the population. The results of
      this study are significant because they shed light on the current social conversation
      about inequality.

      3. Statistical significance is found in a study, but the effect in reality is very small (i.e.,
      there was a very minor difference in attitude between men and women). Were the
      results meaningful?
      An independent samples t test was conducted to determine whether differences
      exist between men and women on cultural competency scores. The samples
      consisted of 663 women and 650 men taken from a convenience sample of public,
      private, and non-profit organizations. Each participant was administered an
      instrument that measured his or her current levels of cultural competency. The

      cultural competency score ranges from 0 to 10, with higher scores indicating higher
      levels of cultural competency. The descriptive statistics indicate women have
      higher levels of cultural competency (M = 9.2, SD = 3.2) than men (M = 8.9, SD =
      2.1). The results were significant t (1311) = 2.0, p <.05, indicating that women are
      more culturally competent than are men. These results tell us that gender-specific
      interventions targeted toward men may assist in bolstering cultural competency.

      4. A study has results that seem fine, but there is no clear association to social
      change. What is missing?
      A correlation test was conducted to determine whether a relationship exists
      between level of income and job satisfaction. The sample consisted of 432
      employees equally represented across public, private, and non-profit sectors. The
      results of the test demonstrate a strong positive correlation between the two
      variables, r =.87, p < .01, showing that as level of income increases, job
      satisfaction increases as well.
