the role of culture

Vissing (2011) explains culture as “an organized system of living and thinking. It contains shared attitudes, values, goals, and behaviors that are present in individuals, groups, organizations, or regions of the world” (p. 24). After reading Chapter 3 in the text and “The Relation Between Culture and Social Structure,” summarize some of the ways that the role of culture can shape our expectations about how people are supposed to behave. Moreover, discuss how culture is involved in the consequences when a person does not behave as one is supposed to. Be sure to use the following terms in your explanation: values, norms, material, status, groups, and roles.
Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references.

___________________________________________

In the period of 1922 until 1991, Russia was the biggest contributor to the Soviet Union. However, during the last half of the final period of the 20th century, America and the Soviet Union became the major players to the epic battle that was referred as Cold War that would lead to the domination of the global community. The struggle that caused the war was between the capitalism and the communist states of the economic and social movements. After Russia adopting the democracy and capitalism structures, Cold War tales are about the colors of Russian-U.S. relationships.

World War II The Soviet Union and other nations were issued with money before the World War II to finance the purchase of weapons and other support for the fight against the Nazi Germany. Russia and the United States became allies during the liberation of the European community. When the war was over, the nations that were dominated by Soviet forces developed the Soviet influence. A territory was described by the British Prime Minister to be behind the Iron Curtain. The separation gave framework that leads to the Cold War that took place in 1947 to 1991.

The fall of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev who was the Soviet leader managed to lead a series of reforms that resulted in the dissolution of the Soviet empire and formed independent states. In the year 1991, Boris Yeltsin became the first Russian president through a democratic election. The reforms in Russia created an overhaul to the United States foreign and defense policies.

The New Cooperation The Cold War created the new opportunity for the United States and Russia. The permanent seat was taken by Russia (the veto power) that was there before held by the Soviet Union under the United Nations Security Council. The gridlock created by the council brought a new birth to the United Nations. It was after the Cold War that Russia was invited to be among the G-7 members. The G-7 members are known to be the largest economic group in the world making it to the G-8. The union helped the United States and Russia in finding ways to cooperate with the aim of securing loose nukes formerly in the Soviet boundary. However, there is more to be done in the union between Russia and the United States.

Purpose of Assignment

This assignment will introduce students to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data and provide students with the skills to calculate inflation and interpret the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Note: The BLS is the primary source of information on inflation, but their data is re-posted in other sources, such as the St. Louis Federal Reserve FRED site, among others.

Assignment Steps

Resources: Tutorial help on Excel® and Word functions can be found on the Microsoft® Office website. There are also additional tutorials via the web offering support for Office products.

Use an internet search or the University Library to locate information on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Internet sites you might find useful include the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Federal Reserve of St. Louis FRED web site although you are allowed to use other sources.

Develop a minimum 700-word analysis of inflation by including the following:

  • Choose a product or service you currently consume/use, such as apparel or educational services, that is included in the CPI’s “market basket.” Find the annual CPI index numbers for your chosen good or service for the years 1995, 2005, 2010, and 2015. Enter those index numbers in an Excel® file and calculate the percent change (inflation rates) in those index numbers from 1995 to 2005, from 1995 to 2010, and from 1995 to 2015.
  • Analyze the trends in overall inflation over the last five years and whether your income has kept pace with inflation. How has inflation over the last five years affected you and/or your family?
  • Discuss how a business manager, such as a human resources manager, might use CPI statistics.

Cite a minimum of three scholarly, peer-reviewed references.

Format your paper consistent with APA guidelines.

Managing People

Introduction and Alignment

Human resource management (HRM) refers to the policies, practices, and systems that influence employees’ behavior, attitudes, and performance. Many companies refer to HRM as involving “people practices.” The strategy underlying these practices needs to be considered to maximize their influence on company performance. (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart, & Wright, 2019, p. 4)

The textbook reading for this Workshop One assignment is Chapter 1—“Human Resource Management: Gaining a Competitive Advantage.” The learning concepts in the reading include:

  • Roles and activities of a company’s human resource management (HRM) function
  • Implications of the economy, the makeup of the labor force, and ethics for company sustainability
  • How human resource management affects a company’s balanced scorecard
  • What companies should do to compete in the global marketplace
  • How new technology—such as social networking, artificial intelligence, and robotics—is influencing HRM
  • Human resource management practices that support high-performance work systems (Noe et al., 2019, p. 2)

Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to:

  • Discuss human resource management practices that support high-performance work systems.
  • Assess opportunities to recognize and respond to generational issues through effective HR practices.

Resources

Background Information

The HR department is solely responsible for outplacement, labor law compliance, record keeping, testing, unemployment compensation, and some aspects of benefits administration. The HR department is most likely to collaborate with other company functions on employment interviewing, performance management and discipline, and efforts to improve quality and productivity. Large companies are more likely than small ones to employ HR specialists, with benefits specialists being the most prevalent. Other common specializations include recruitment, compensation, and training and development. Many different roles and responsibilities can be performed by the HR department depending on the size of the company, the characteristics of the workforce, the industry, and the value system of company management. (Noe et al., 2019, pp. 6–7)

In this case study, you will evaluate how Marriott utilizes HR practices focused on putting employees first. Built on the principle, “Take care of associates and they will care of customers” (Noe et al., 2019, p. 63), this approach to HRM, based on employee satisfaction and engagement, has helped contribute to success in a highly competitive industry.

Understanding Poetry

Week 3 Discuss Section

  • MUST CONTAIN a minimum of 250 words, and it MUST ALSO CONTAIN two scholarly sources, i.e. articles from the library’s databases that you have consulted.

1.

Read the following three poems. Then, read them again. Read each of them aloud (which might help you to feel out the sounds in the poem).

Poem #1 – “Ode to Browsing the Web” by African-American poet Marcus Wicker (NOTE: Don’t let the language in this poem dissuade you from taking the time to think about how it’s crafted. Wicker is a rising star in the poetry world for good reasons.)

http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poem/246482

Poem #2 – “Traveling Through the Dark” by William Stafford

http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/171495

Poem #3 – “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/wild-geese-by-mary-oliver/

Next, describe (in one paragraph/per poem) the pictures these poems create in your mind. Make specific reference to each poem’s use of imagery. Try to be as specific as you can. Pull out passages, words or details that particularly impact you. Or, if something confuses or boggles you, feel free to share that, too.

What we want to do here is simply begin to engage with a poem and try to understand what it’s made of; we’ll start with the images in a poem and what those images lead to in terms of meaning.

For each poem, try to write one paragraph about what you “see.”

Complete Section- 1200 word minimum and 3 scholarly sources

Read the following poems:

  • Alexie, “Evolution” (pages 523 – 524)
  • Randall, “Ballad of Birmingham” (page 529 – 530)
  • Alarcón, “Mexican is Not a Noun” (pages 542 – 543)
  • Williams, “Red Wheelbarrow” (page 563)
  • Frost, “Out, Out” (pages 596 – 597
  • 2.”Select THREE central images in Alexie’s “Evolution.” In one 150-word paragraph per image, describe Alexie’s choice of language in crafting these images and why his word choice is vital to the poem’s larger theme of systematic Native American degradation. Your response must include at least one scholarly source. Be sure to properly cite. For more details on how your response will be evaluated, please review the rubrics found under Unit 3 Course Materials.”

3.”In 400 words explain your reaction to how Alarcón chose to structure his poem, “Mexican is Not a Noun.” Pay close attention to Alarcón’s word choice, word order, line breaks and use of stanzas. Hint: you might choose to discuss the impact/effect of such short lines and stanzas. Your response must include at least one scholarly source. Be sure to properly cite. For more details on how your response will be evaluated, please review the rubrics found under Unit 3 Course Materials.”

4.”In 400 words explain your reaction to the imagery in Williams’ poem, “Red Wheelbarrow.” Questions to consider in your response: Why does Williams use the phrase “so much depends?” What does the speaker mean by saying that? Hint: pay close attention to the central images in this poem. What do they represent? What words does Williams choose to describe the images? Your response must include at least one scholarly source. Be sure to properly cite. For more details on how your response will be evaluated, please review the rubrics found under Unit 3 Course Materials.”
