Capital Budgeting Accounting Homework help

Ben Guslists, vice-president of sales, has recommended adding a new product line. A market study and cost analysis show that the new line should yield the following annual results:

New Sales $2,800,000.00

Cost of Sales $1,600,000.00

Operating Expenses $200,000.00

Total Expenses $1,800,000.00

Income before Income taxes $1,000,000.00

Income taxes (40%) $400,000.00

Net Income $600,000.00

Depreciation of $150,000.00 is included in total expenses. Cost of sales and operating expenses include only direct costs of the new line.

Financial data for last year, considered to be a typical year, are:

Net Sales $12,000,000.00

Cost of Sales $7,500,000.00

Operating Expenses $1,800,000.00

Total Expenses $9,300,000.00

Operating Income $2,700,000.00

Interest Expense $100,000.00

Income before Income taxes $2,600,000.00

Income taxes (40%) $1,040,000.00

Net Income $1,560,000.00

Total Assets $12,000,000.00

Current Liabilities $3,000,000.00

Long term debt $1,000,000.00

Shareholders’ equity $8,000,000.00

Total liabilities and equities $12,000,000.00

Depreciation expense included totals $400,000.00 for the firm.

The investment in additional equipment for the production and sale of the new product line has been estimated at $3,000,000.00. “The new product line will yield a 20 percent return on assets,” Guslists states.

Steve Grunewald, the vice-president of production, interrupts, “Are you talking about a cash-flow return, Ben?” he asks. “No,” Guslists answers. “When depreciation is added back, the cash-flow return will be greater.”

The vice-president of finance, Jude Gallagher, asks, “How do you think we should finance the investment?”

“We should be able to issue long term notes”, Guslits responds. “Our debt at the present time is modest. And with debt financing, we gain the advantage of leverage.”

“In your estimate, Ben you forgot to include any interest cost. It will cost us $150,000.00 after income taxes to finance $3,000,000.00,” Gallagher replies.

Required:

  1. What impacts will the new product line have on profit measures and cash flows?
  2. Examine and comment on Guslits’ strategy to finance the investment. Is it likely that shareholders will be impressed with the investment? Why?
  3. In your opinion, is the investment attractive? Explain.

Unit 2 Discussion 2

Demographic Perspectives

Research has illustrated that the increased size and proportion of our older population has an impact on the family in later life. In the United States, the number of elderly people is projected to exceed 70 million by the year 2030, at which time all of the baby boomers will have reached age 65; older individuals will represent about 20 percent of our population by then—one in every five people you see on the sidewalks and in the grocery store will be 65 or older! Of equal magnitude are the challenges for the global community to plan for their aging societies and to propose and implement culturally relevant solutions to the challenges of health care and economic security. The demographic frame of reference will continually direct our attention to the distinct yet diverse characteristics, situations, and needs of the family in later life; to the aging of our society; and to global aging.

As a human service and public service leader, you have increased your awareness of the abundance and utility of demographic information about the family in later life and aging in the United States and elsewhere. For this discussion, consider the demographic information that might be useful concerning the family in later life for one or more of the following audiences: your chosen profession, your local community, politicians or policy makers, or marketers or product developers. Using one of the sources cited in the assigned chapter readings for this unit and integrating your thoughts from the Intergenerational Timeline, the Riverbend City simulation, and course readings, complete the following:

  1. Find three or four facts about the family in later life that would be useful for the audience(s) you have identified.
  2. Identify the audience(s) and discuss the information and how you would share it.
  3. Discuss the implications of the information for your chosen audience.
  4. Support your position with scholarly and professional research from the current literature.

“The Bad Citizen in Classical Athens” BOOK REVIEW (1200 words)

Writing a thorough book review (1200 Words).

Be sure to provide a full citation for the book you are reviewing at the top of your review: Author, Title (Place, Date). Also be sure to put your name on your paper.

All book reviews require the following elements: a discussion of the topic of the book, a presentation of the book’s thesis (or lack of a thesis if this is the case), a discussion of the historiographical context* in which the book is presented, a discussion of the organization/structure of the book, i. e. number of chapters, sections, the main arguments of the individual chapters, whether it is has a bibliography, whether it has an index, whether there is a scholarly apparatus of foot notes or end notes, a discussion of the sources used by the scholar, and finally an assessment of the success of the work in terms of argument, presentation, and style, including an assessment of the likely audience for this work. In discussing the sources, it is important to address the question of how the author uses particularly types of sources to answer particular kinds of questions.

*The historiographical context of a book is the overall discussion of this topic by previous scholars. It is almost never the case that an author is the first one to address a historical question. In almost every case, the historian is responding to what other earlier scholars have written about the topic. In some cases the historian whose work you are reading disagrees with previous scholarly views. In some cases, the historian whose work you are reading thinks that previous scholars have missed a valuable issue, and seeks to address this issue in his or her own study. Whatever the case may be, your task is to inform the reader regarding your author’s discussion of previous scholarly treatments of the issue, and the ways in which your author intends to challenge or augment previous work on the topic.

In fairness to the readers of the review, who depend on the review for a decision about whether the book is worth reading or even purchasing, the reviewer must strive to provide an impartial presentation of the author’s intent in the subject matter and thesis. Once these have been presented, it is then the reviewers obligation to state his or her opinion about whether the book succeeded in discussing the subject matter in a compelling manner and whether the author made his or her case with regard to the thesis. Similarly, it is the reviewers task to examine carefully both the scholarly works and the sources employed by the author to see if there are significant gaps, e. g. no scholarship in German, no citations to Latin texts but only to English translations.
