Explain and demonstrate knowledge of concepts including the supply/demand relationship, price ceilings and floors, and market surpluses and shortages.

Course Scenario

Oil Company X is a large oil refinery which has been expanding and taking on new investment projects. Recently, they have considered building a pipeline that stretches across the United States, from Canada to New Orleans.

The Board is considering a proposal to increase their oil stores to better prepare for events that impact the market price of oil. They have asked you, as a member of the Cost Department, to determine events that effect the price of oil. They have requested a report explaining the various effects of these events on equilibrium price and quantity.

Instructions

As a cost analyst at your firm, you are asked to evaluate the effects that the following scenarios will have on the supply and demand of oil in the oil market. You will submit a PowerPoint document with any relevant graphs, including a narration of the shift changes as if you were explaining them to the Board.

Using the drawing tools in PowerPoint, graph the changes to the supply and demand curves in response to the following events:

1. Natural disaster near the outlet of the pipeline.
2. Natural disaster near the inlet of the pipeline.
3. Recession.
4. Increase in availability of alternative energy sources.

Be sure to provide an oral explanation to justify why the supply and/or demand curve would shift, the direction of the shift, and the new resulting equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity. Remember that you do not need to include actual figures, but rather explain if the price and quantity would be increasing or decreasing. You can use the drawing tools within PowerPoint to draw your graphs. Also, be sure to include the change in the resulting equilibrium price and equilibrium quantity if any curve shifts occur.

Record a presentation as if explaining this to the Board. There are many free screen recording software/Webware options available (such as Screencast-O-Matic) to use in presenting your PowerPoint. Make sure that both your voiced narration and the PowerPoint slides are captured during your screen recording.

After recording, paste a link to the recording on the last slide of the PowerPoint presentation. You will submit the PowerPoint in the Drop Box.

Format your PowerPoint to include a title page, introduction, body slides, conclusion, and references. Remember to cite your sources using correct APA format, and also use correct grammar, spelling, and formatting.

Social media has grown to become a very important source of information for travelers to make decisions regarding destinations and hospitality services. Particularly, online product reviews such as those in websites Tripadvior and Yelp have become an essential electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) and have shown to influence consumer behavior and, as result, generate impact on business performances. Therefore, there is an increasing need for businesses to understand what consumers are sharing with each other through these online reviews. In this exercise, you are expected to apply a text analytics tools, i.e., word cloud generator, to online reviews and interpret the results from the business perspective.

Specifically, you need to do the following:

1. Identify a real business.
2. Propose an idea to use Word Cloud Generator (https://www.wordclouds.com/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.) for business purposes;
3. Collect data (>100 reviews), run analyses (show graphs), and interpret results (what it means);
4. Make recommendations to the business.

Note:

1. You need to provide the rationale for the data you select.
2. There are different ways to enter the data, how you want the data to be processed (e.g., removing stopwords etc), and how you want the program to display the word clouds. You should explain these specifications in the paper.
3. There are different ways to use the tool, e.g., to understand what people talk about the business in negative vs. positive reviews, how does the focal business compare with its competitors, etc. You need to be creative!

A few requirements for the paper:

1. Use a cover page, main body (consisting of sections) and reference page to organize your paper.
2. Try to limit the main body to eight pages of actual text (including tables, charts, and figures). The paper must be double-spaced and written in twelve-point type with standard margins. The page limit does not include the cover page, a reference page (if applicable), and/or any attachments you would like to include.
3. You must reference all of the sources you cite in the paper. An APA.

Cost of Living

The City of St. Albans has a unionized police force that is coming up for a contract renewal. The police have one issue: the cost of living increases. During the past 10 years, police officers have received minimal cost of living increases, and this time they want to match what other police forces are making. They claim that their salaries are below the national level. The incoming new police hire earns a salary of $48,200. Using the websites provided in the research section, prepare data and an argument on behalf of the police officers to support their position (from textbook).

This assignment will be written as a PowerPoint slide show presentation (PowerPoint Tips). Approach it as if you are giving the presentation to governing board of the City of Albans. You are trying to persuade the board that the police officers need a raise. Your proposal should be:

• 8-10 power point slides
• The note section of the slides should be used to explain the slides.
• At least two recent and credible sources in addition to the textbook must be used.
• All sources must be cited using APA formatting.
• Charts, tables, graphs, etc., may be used.
• The first slide should be a title slide.

The last slide should be a reference list.
