RE: DISCUSSION (WK3) SOCW6301 -Formulating Research Questions

Week 3: Defining the Research Problem; Justifying the Study; Reviewing Existing Literature

Successfully conducted research studies often provide the answers to challenges of social work practice, of obstacles in social work research, and of gaps of knowledge within the field. In order to conduct a successful research study, the research question must be clearly defined, well justified, and offer something new to the field’s knowledge base. Whether using quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-method applications to data, the research study can only be as good as the research question that guides it. This week, you focus on defining research questions, justifying studies, and reviewing existing literature.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze research questions
  • Create research questions

Discussion: Formulating Research Questions

Research problems can come from a variety of places. A topic can come up during a discussion with a colleague that motivates you to want to learn more about it. You may have a question for which you cannot find an answer, so you decide to conduct a research study in hopes of finding an answer. You may identify a particular gap in knowledge and be inclined to investigate that gap and close it with the results of a research study.

For this Discussion, consider how crafting a good research question is the cornerstone for designing robust studies that yield useable data. Review the Sessions episode on the Talia Johnson case. Locate two peer reviewed articles authored by the researcher David Lisak on the topics of the undetected rapist and predatory nature.

Post two potential research questions related to the Sessions episode. Consider potential ethical or political issues related to the feasibility of investigating the questions. Evaluate each question in terms of how it might:

  • Contribute to development of new knowledge for social work
  • Lead to more effective practice interventions
  • Lead to social change
  • Be useful to other researchers

Finally, explain the criteria you used to decide which sources of information should be included. Please use the resources to support your answer.

Argument/Persuasive Assignment

Objective:

Write an essay that effectively argues your position on the prompt and presents evidence

from the texts as support. Evaluate and utilize outside sources, effective quoting and clear

analysis. Use and apply rhetorical strategies learned in your own argument.

Required Research/Readings:

This essay will require a minimum of

four (4)

outside sources, which you will need to

find. These source need to be reliable, credible and correctly cited in MLA. You need to

introduce these sources as you use them in the essay and correctly cite them in a Works

Cited page.

Length pages (not including Works Cited)

Background:

If you have ever had to convince your parents to let you borrow the car or

stay out late, or convince a friend or a partner that you should get pizza tonight and not

sushi, you have (possibly subconsciously) used argumentative/persuasion tactics to

convince the other person to agree with you. One of the greatest tools that we have as

writers is the power to persuade others, a skill that will be useful to you far beyond

English class.

The main purpose of an argument/persuasive essay is to convince your audience to

take your side on an issue by presenting a logical idea and supporting it with specific

and appropriate researched evidence.

Prompt:

For this assignment, you will develop an argumentative essay that establishes a clear

claim, supports it with researched sources and refutes at least one counter argument.

You will have two options:

A. Choose a controversial local (San Diego County) issue and argue in favor of one

side.

Previous topics have included issues such as:

What should be done with Children’s Pool in La Jolla?

Should a new Chargers stadium be built? (over now)

How should the pollution in San Diego be controlled?

Should there be a casino in Jamul? (over now)

When choosing a topic for this option, a good idea would be to turn on

your local nightly news or open the newspaper to the local news section.

B. Choose a California based educational issue. These issues can deal with budgets,

student populations, classroom practices or anything else that impacts education

in statewide California classrooms.

With either option, you must argue for a specific course of action, meaning you

shouldn’t only say it is a problem. You should argue what we should do about it/what

changes should be made.

Your essay must also include a minimum of four (4) reliable scholarly sources used with

proper MLA citation and a Works Cited page.

Your essay should consider and refute at least one counter argument. You can address the

counter argument anywhere in the essay. Remember to present a possible counter and

respond to it with a logical refutation.

News story

Also this Has to be with a Third voice writing you cannot use ( I ) its okay to use there and they and anything with a third voice .

Critical Annotated Bibliography of Five Sources

Writing Assignment #1

Critical Annotated Bibliography of Five Sources

Summary of assignment

  • Task: In this assignment you will write a list of at least 5 sources in alphabetical order in APA format. In addition, each reference will be followed by a short analytical summary of 150-200 words. At the end of the short summary, you will include a sentence or two that critically analyzes the source and that mentions distinctive features about the article and why it may or may not be useful for you in pursuing more research.
  • Length:each annotation should be 150-200 words
  • Format: APA

Strategies in Selecting a Topic for your Annotated Bibliography

You may select a topic of your choice. However, when selecting a topic, keep in mind that it should be a topic on which a number of studies or scholarly articles have been published.

Examples of topics students have chosen in the past or that would be workable for this assignment are the following:

  • The impact of the Internet on research methods of students and plagiarism in student papers
  • The impact of The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act on primary school education
  • The impact of mobile devices on cybersecurity

Overall, in considering a topic, you might consider your major, topics that will be covered in future classes you plan to take at UMUC, and your interests.

For example, please examine the following ideas:

  • If your major is criminal justice, you might consider researching criminal behavior among homeless individuals, criminal behavior among youth, society’s perception of law enforcement, etc.
  • If your major is psychology, you might consider researching counseling strategies, consumer behavior in online shopping, decision-making in upper-management positions, etc.
  • If your major is history, you might consider researching theories on the Civil War, studies on labor patterns in the United States, an aspect of military history, etc.
  • If your major is social science, you might consider researching community responses to health care threats, co-parenting patterns after divorce, etc.
  • If your major is graphic communication, you might consider researching different categories of graphic communication technology, trends in graphic communication through the years, etc.

Whatever topic you consider, keep in mind that it should be a topic on which a number of studies or scholarly articles have been published.

Approach

This assignment will be an analytical/critical/ annotated bibliography. The difference between the descriptive/informative annotated bibliography and the analytical/critical annotated bibliography is explained in the Below Transcript:

Transcript

You have just been given an assignment to write an annotated bibliography. Before you begin, you need to know what exactly an annotated bibliography is and how to get started.

FIRST, WHAT IS AN ANNOTATION?

An annotation is more than just a brief summary of an article, book, Web site or other type of publication. An annotation should give enough information to make a reader decide whether to read the complete work. In other words, if the reader were exploring the same topic as you, is this material useful and if so, why?

HOW IS AN ANNOTATION DIFFERENT FROM AN ABSTRACT?

While an abstract also summarizes an article, book, Web site or other type of publication, it is purely descriptive. Although annotations can be descriptive, they also include distinctive features about an item. Annotations can be evaluative and critical as we will see when we look at the two major types of annotations.

WHAT IS AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY?

An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources (like a reference list). It differs from a straightforward bibliography in that each reference is followed by a pparagraph length annotation, usually 100–200 words in length.

Depending on the assignment, an annotated bibliography might have different purposes:

  • Provide a literature review on a particular subject
  • Help to formulate a thesis on a subject
  • Demonstrate the research you have performed on a particular subject
  • Provide examples of major sources of information available on a topic
  • Describe items that other researchers may find of interest on a topic

TYPES OF ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHIES

There are two major types of annotated bibliographies:

  1. Descriptive or informative
  2. Analytical or critical

Descriptive or informative

A descriptive or informative annotated bibliography describes or summarizes a source as does an abstract, it describes why the source is useful for researching a particular topic or question, its distinctive features. In addition, it describes the author’s main arguments and conclusions without evaluating what the author says or concludes.

For example:

Breeding evil. (2005, August 6). Economist, 376(8438), 9. Retrieved from http://www.economist.com

This editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and the effect they have on people who use them. The author points out that skepticism of new media have gone back to the time of the ancient Greeks, so this controversy surrounding video games is nothing new. The article also points out that most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of generations not understanding one another, rather than of the games themselves. As the youth of today grow older, the controversy will die out, according to the author. The author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This article is distinctive in exploring the controversy surrounding video games from a generational standpoint and is written for a general audience.

Please pay attention to the last sentence. While it points out distinctive features about the item it does not analyze the author’s conclusions.

Analytical or critical

An analytical or critical annotation not only summarizes the material, it analyzes what is being said. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of what is presented as well as describing the applicability of the author’s conclusions to the research being conducted.

For most of your annotated bibliographies, however, you will be writing analytical or critical annotations.

For example:

Breeding evil. (2005, August 6). Economist, 376(8438), 9. Retrieved from http://www.economist.com

This editorial from the Economist describes the controversy surrounding video games and the effect they have on people who use them. The article points out that most critics of gaming are people over 40 and it is an issue of age not of the games themselves. While the author briefly mentions studies done around the issue of violence and gaming, he does not go into enough depth for the reader to truly know the range of studies that have actually been done in this area, other than to take his word that the research is unsatisfactory. The author of this article stresses the age factor over violence as the real reason for opposition to video games and stresses the good gaming has done in most areas of human life. This article is a good resource for those wanting to begin to explore the controversy surrounding video games, however for anyone doing serious research, one should actually examine some of the research studies that have been done in this area rather than simply take the author’s word that opposition to video games is simply due to an issue of generational divide.

Please pay attention to the last sentence. It criticizes the authors research.

Please note that in these samples, the citations follow the APA format. Your instructor may require you to use another citation format, such as MLA, so check first.

TO GET STARTED

Now you are ready to begin writing your own annotated bibliography.

  • Choose your sources Before writing your annotated bibliography, you must choose your sources. This involves doing research much like for any other project. Locate records to materials that may apply to your topic.
  • Review the items Then review the actual items and choose those that provide a wide variety of perspectives on your topic. Article abstracts are helpful in this process.
  • Write the citation and annotation When writing your annotation, the complete citation should always come first and the annotation follows. Depending on the type of annotated bibliography you are writing, you will want to include:
    1. The purpose of the work
    2. A summary of its content
    3. For what type of audience the work is written
    4. Its relevance to the topic
    5. Any special or unique features about the material
    6. The strengths, weaknesses or biases in the material

Annotated bibliographies may be arranged alphabetically or chronologically, check with your instructor to see what he or she prefers.

GUIDELINES FOR FORMATTING THE CITATIONS

Remember, the citations themselves must be formatted properly. these guides to help you correctly format citations according to APA, MLA or Chicago Style. Remember to check with your instructor if you are unsure which style to use.

Submitting the Work:

  • Please submit a first draft of the essay to me a before 12 hours or 24hours before due date.
  • I will review and provide comments to it. Using the comments, you do the corrects and provide the final draft.

Sources to be use:

Please find the attached pdf files. I have 5 copies attached (WA# source1 – 5) for the five sources to be written. Please do let me know if we can use these sources. Also, you can equally do you own research just make sure to cite correctly. Can you go through the articles and list me the topics you will be writing on before you proceed to write?

TIP: Please use this template Template for Taking Notes on Research Articles” that will help you write the assignment

Template for Taking Notes on Research Articles: Easy access for later use

Whenever you read an article, pertinent book chapter, or research on the web, use

the following format (or something similar—LaTex or Endnote, for example) to

make an electronic record of your notes for later easy access. You may think you’ll

remember everything you read in researching class assignments, professional

papers, proposals, or your thesis, but details will slip away. The time spent filling

out the form will help you understand the reading and will save you hours of

rereading when you write a Background, Related Work, or a Literature Review

section. Put quotation marks around any exact wording you write down so that you

can avoid accidental plagiarism when you later cite the article.

Service blog assignment:

The text book is attached Use the concept in chapter 1,2,3,4 and 12

A sample of a blog is attached

The purpose of this assignment it to understand and evaluate service encounters from your perspective as a customer. In addition, keeping the blog will sensitize you to the various service issues we will be covering in this course.

Every learner in this class will complete a service encounter blog outlining two service encounters. After the service encounter is described, the experience will be analyzed in relation to the textbook chapter concepts/terms for that week/period.

We all have a number of service encounters every week, everything from restaurants, banks, airlines, dry cleaners, travel agencies, phone and cable providers, public transport and libraries to medical services. Each blog entry will correspond to one service encounter you have had over the term. Collect a variety of types of incidents (i.e., don’t do only restaurants); including some that you find very satisfying and some that are very dissatisfying. The best way to complete your blog is to record each one immediately following a particular encounter.

Analyze your entries in relation to the chapters covered during that week or over that period and identify five to seven common threads that relate to the text. Write a short 2 to 3 pages (approximately 1000 words) report (12 pt.) describing your encounter and relate your encounter to chapter concepts. Include page number references for the analysis. Include external resources for additional insight.

Each journal entry should include the following:

  • Name of service firm, type of service (e.g., airline, bank) , can be online website such as amazon
  • Date and time of encounter
  • Chapter(s) service encounter relates to
  • Identify concepts from the chapter(s) which will be discussed in the blog in the beginning of the blog
  • Price of service (for relationship-type services, e.g., your cell phone or banking service, provide your average monthly bill or fees)
  • Describe your encounter briefly, so that someone who was not there would know what happened. Include the following in additional to other descriptors
    • What were your expectations?
    • Details of the services, interactions with staff, facilities, etc.
    • Were your expectations met?
  • How would you rate your level of satisfaction with this encounter on a scale of 1 to 7– extremely dissatisfied’ to 7 ‘extremely satisfied’.
  • What were your reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction associated with each incident
  • How would you describe your reaction to this encounter? Include in your description
  • Include your feelings and emotions at that time (e.g., angry, sad, happy, etc.). Why did you feel that way?
  • How likely is it that you will go back to that service provider/firm? Rate on a scale from one ‘definitely not’ to 7 ‘definitely yes’. What could the employee/firm have done to make you happier with the encounter? Alternatively, what did the employee/firm do that made you happy with the encounter?
  • If it was an unsatisfactory experience, include any attempt by the firm to recover from the service failure.
  • Why would you return or not return to that firm? (Provide details, especially when there is a big discrepancy between your satisfaction and your repeat patronage intention?)
  • Identify concepts/terms from the chapters scheduled for the period that relate to the encounter. Relate each encounter to chapter concepts for the specified period. Cite chapter references with page numbers. Cite external references using APA style (include web URL or permalink instead of the “doi” so that I can access the article). Use only journals/periodicals that are in the public domain or that are on the Camosun library database. If other journals are used, provide a complete copy of the journal article.
  • Use references from scholarly sources.
  • Popular sources can be used, but they need to be supported with an additional scholarly source.
  • Under Chapter contents in the textbook online resource, Mindtap, you will find a section called Key terms. These are useful in determine the concepts/terms in relation to your experience.

Scholarly sources:

  • are original research published in academic or research journals
  • are researched and written by experts in the field
  • are usually peer-reviewed (meaning they are evaluated by other experts in the same field)
  • citations are included
  • are usually longer in length, about 10-30 pages

Popular sources:

  • these are general interest stories which may refer to research but do not contain original research – keep these to a minimum in your writing.
  • these may or may not be credible.
  • usually written by the general public
  • are not peer-reviewed
  • very rarely include citations
  • are usually shorter in length, about 200 words to a few pages

Unacceptable sources:

  • Wikipedia
  • Social media sites (fake news)
  • Business promotional sites
  • Previously used presentation or documents in other classes (this is considered cheating)
  • Documents that are posted on or in an essay writing service.

Internet Paper

SOC/WOMS 306

Length: 2-3 pages

Times New Roman, 12pt font, 1″ margins, double spaced

50 points possible

As we study gender roles and social change, it is important to understand the agencies and organizations that work to either maintain the status quo or work to facilitate social change. To investigate these entities and the issues with which they work, I want you to select an issue and find an organization on each side of the debate. The instructions that follow will provide you with a framework with which to present the issue and its many sides.

Pick one of the following topics or suggest a topic of your own. If a topic you are particularly interested in is not on this list come see me! As long as there is a gendered aspect to the topic you can use it with prior approval.

  • Mail order brides
  • Same-sex marriage
  • Divorce
  • Bigamy and polygamy
  • Cohabitation
  • Parenting
  • Fathers’ Rights
  • Housework
  • Other

Instructions

  1. Find two websites (organizations) that have conflicted viewpoints (opposites sides) from each other on your issue. Answer the following questions for EACH organization:
  1. What is its name? Who founded it? When and why did they start the organization?
  2. What does the organization do? How is it funded? How many members do they have?
  3. Who is most likely to be a member? Who is least likely?
  1. Address the following gender issues:
  1. What are the key issues of each side? What are their arguments for their side?
  2. What legislation has passed or failed to pass which relates to this issue?
  3. How is gender a key concern in this debate?
  4. Which sociological perspective would best fit each side of the debate? Why?
  1. Your paper should have an introduction, a conclusion and three sections with bold headings. The first two bold headings should be the names of the organizations and the third one should be called Gender Issues.
  2. At the end of your paper, you should cite the web address of the sites you used.
  3. Remember to keep your paper focused on how your issue is specifically related to gender roles, norms and inequality.

Here are some tips from last semester that can help with your internet papers.

  1. Do not leave out sections of the paper that were included in the directions:

  4. See the example posted for more.

  1. Your assignments are submitted through safe assign so you can check for plagiarism. When I open your safe assign report and there are multiple areas flagged that are directly taken from another source without a single change or quotation mark that is considered plagiarism. I will take 50% off of your grade for plagiarism. I strongly suggest reviewing the multiple resources I have added to this course under the course resources tab in Blackboard if you are confused about this.

Because I am offering a reminder about these things, you will not be able to correct your papers after the due date.

2 paragraghs. Human services. 3-1

As this is Part II of your two-week exploration of instruments used to analyze a family and/or community, choose the remaining two assessment instruments that you did not select in last week’s discussion: ecomaps, genograms, sociograms, or culturagrams.

Investigate these resources further on your own and/or review the following resources, which were also provided in the previous discussion:

Then practice with the instrument by diagramming your own family, or a family of your choice from a TV show or movie. It is helpful if you use the same family as you did in Module Two so that you can see the variation in the instruments.

You can use Microsoft Word to create your diagram by using the shape and line features, or you may hand draw the diagram. You are encouraged (but not required) to upload your actual diagrams so that your peers can see your work and so you can demonstrate their use when applied to a family or community.

In your submission, answer the following questions:

  1. What did you learn about the family (either your own family or a TV/movie family) during this process that you did not know before?
  2. Given your use of all four tools over the past two weeks, which two tools did you find to be most helpful? Provide a rationale for your selection of the two most helpful tools.

In responding to your classmates’ posts, comment on their learning and identify additional ways in which one or more of the tools could be helpful and provide a rationale to support your response.

You will discuss the Founding Principles and how they were displayed (or not displayed) in a particular period of time.

For this assignment, you will discuss the Founding Principles and how they were displayed (or not displayed) in a particular period of time. (Jacksonian Era)

After selecting a period (Jacksonian Era), post a 250-300 word entry that 1) state one founding principle 2) how it was employed or ignored in the selected era. No outside sources are allowed. Be sure to utilize the readings and lectures from the class to support your arguments.

It’s basically a disscussion that need to answer the question about an article

The article by Wamboye, Adekola and Sergi, among other things, aims to evaluate the extent to which U.S. institutions of higher learning are internationalized and the perceived international awareness, competency, and expertise of U.S. students. For this question, and based on your reading of the article, I would like you all to comment on ways that U.S. higher education institutions could raise domestic student awareness and involvement in study abroad programs. Which strategies do you think might work best for the population of students attending UNA? How might your choice of strategies differ if you were thinking about another much larger state institution in Alabama? Finally, comment on the degree of importance that you personally attach to internalization of college campuses.

I want the answer to be about 250-350 words and it doesn’t have to be formal like in a APA format or stuff like that. Just a basic response of what you think of this article and make sure to answer EVERY question the professor asked. Please and thank you.

policies for limiting child-targeted advertising for fast food for Australia

Questions to Respond to:

1.Briefly describe the country to which you have been assigned, and the health status of that country overall (e.g. life expectancy; leading causes of death; prevalence of nutrition-related diseases (obesity, diabetes, CVD); health indictors such as smoking, physical activity, and healthy eating)

2.Briefly describe the prevalence of nutrition-related diseases/disorders in children in the country. If data is available on children’s health behaviors, please include that as well.
