How Do I Prepare for the Future

Chapter 7: How Do I Prepare for the Future?

The final chapter of your treatise will serve as a summation of how you view the future of the field of management and the role you intend to play as a manager. As you develop this chapter, consider where you currently are in your career, the career path you envision for yourself, and how you plan to pursue it. This focus will help ensure you are growing and evolving as a manager and staying current with societal changes, needs, and expectations.

Note: I am presently a Project Manager I work for the School Construction Authority (SCA) my dream is also to complete my Project Management Professional Certification (PMP)along with my Certified Construction Manager (CCM) and later complete my P.E. license Professional Engineering license.

For this chapter answer and address the following topics.

  • What do you dream of accomplishing during your career?
    • Where and how do you see yourself in five years? Ten years?
    • What goals can you set now to help prepare you to be successful? How will you develop and grow your skill set to achieve this goal?
    • How will you ensure you reach your goals and address your priorities?
  • Create a plan for personal and professional growth. Support your plan with references in order to display a concrete/comprehensive strategy for progress.
    • What plan do you have for continual learning and personal improvement?
    • Does your plan include seeking mentorship? If so, what will you look for in a mentor?
  • How will you prepare yourself to be an agent of positive social change? What role does social change play in plans for your future in management?
    • What challenges will you face and how will you be an instrument of change?

This chapter should be from 5-7 pages with at least 4 references.

In-N-Out Business Strategy

In-N-Out Burger as a franchise has developed a business strategy which consist of growing slowly, yet steadily (Cafferky, 2012, p. 587). After reading the case study on In-N-Out, I can conclude the restaurant’s leadership values quality, precision, and loyalty. My assumption is their strategy is slow to insure they make the right decisions and are successful in all they do. If the company rushed it could lead to a decrease in the company’s quality. Slow and steady wins the race. In 2006, the plan was for In-N-Out to open 10 to 12 stores a year for the next five years. I believe this franchise is wise to continue to grow, yet in increments. Some negatives to this strategy in the long-term is this restaurant could be choked out of existence. As other restaurant franchises grow quickly and move across the nation and into other countries. In-N-Out’s niche of simplicity and quality could be lost in the rapid development of competitors. However, I believe this will not be a huge problem for In-N-Out Burger. It may be wise for their leadership to investigate ways to prevent this from happening. A business strategy must be effective and efficient, yet hard-to-imitate (Teece, 2010, p. 180). In-N-Out Burger, has a hard strategy to overcome by the quality they hold in their product which, so many competitors rarely think about. Competitors in the fast-food industry often have plans for fast, cheap, and easy. In-N-Out has none of these qualities in their business strategy.

Desing a Program

After you completed a needs assessment, you were asked to research one of the unmet needs found in your community or organization. This week, you will be designing a program that addresses this need.

One way to design a program is to use a logic model. Chapter 3 of your text described how to do this. Basically, it is a picture or diagram that shows how your program is supposed to work. It identifies the activities that the program should include to address the need and the expected outcome of these activities. The sections of the model will create a framework of action for the program.

The general sections of your model include the purpose or mission, the context, the inputs or resources, the activities or interventions, the outputs or proof the activities were done, and the effects or results. For example, the Community Tool Box uses this diagram to illustrate these sections:

Using the drawing tools in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Visio to create a logic model for your program design. Then, in a 1-2 page paper, expand on each section of your model to thoroughly explain the intentions of your program.

MY NEED ASSESSMENT TO FOLLOW BY

Residents in Miami-Dade in Florida continue to experience significant economic and social challenges which slow down growth and development in the area. The demography attributes from the 2010 census estimated the population to be 2,712,945 residents with persons under 18 years contributing the largest percentage. The white race alone makes up 78.3%, the black and African American comprise 18.5% while other races include the remaining portion. Total housing units by 2016 were 1,021,527 with a median of 53.8% of owner-housing rate, and the median house rent is $ 1,112. Consequently, many people are rendered homeless. 80.1% of the residents have a high school diploma; however, those with a bachelor degree record a low rate of 26.9%. Moreover, per capita income records a rough $23,850 as those in extreme poverty amounts to 20% of the entire population. In addition, about 21.2% of the residents are without health insurance (United States Census Bureau, 2016). The community records high poverty levels that render many unable to afford basic necessities like housing and medical services. Only few people can secure well-paying jobs making unemployment, healthcare, housing and literacy pressing needs in the community.

Nevertheless, initiatives to address literacy are underway through the read to learn program for free books. The project uses donations to buy and distributes books every week where students and parents can access them (Hunton, 2014). Moreover, several organizations have instituted projects to help the community including; The HandOn Miami (HandsOn Miami, 2017) which organizes volunteer programs to bring change in the community through donations, clean-ups, employment, and healthcare services. Moore Charitable Foundation- concerns with environment and wildlife conservation (About, 2017). The Early Learning Coalition (About Us, 2015), it provides early childhood care and education through voluntary and affordable pre-kindergarten projects.

Despite the underway projects in the community, the programs focus primarily on the youth and families. Specific needs in health care like pediatric care, specific programs for the elderly with chronic and nutrition. Furthermore, housing needs for street families and entrepreneurship programs with the aim of reducing poverty do not receive adequate attention.

For my project, I would like to focus on the issue of health care services to the elderly living with chronic diseases. From the demographic data, there is a significant number of people without medical insurance cover. Again, on the per capita and poverty levels, managing and treatment of such diseases are bound to be a complicated process. The project will focus on capacity building, mobilizing resources, managing and treating chronic conditions among the elderly.

Transcribing a 3 min phone call. Must know how to properly transcribe or else I will refund

I need you to transcribe a 3 minute phone call. You must know how to properly transcribe an conversation and know how to use the proper grammar for transcriptions. The assignment is:

Exercise # 1

This exercise will help you develop an understanding of the transcription conventions we will be using in this course. Most of the data we’ll be working with (in lectures, readings, and assignments) are transcripts of spoken interaction. It is important that you learn to recognize what a transcript shows to have happened in interaction, and how it shows that. One very effective way of acquiring this knowledge is by actually producing some transcript, using the various transcription symbols to represent a stretch of talk.

How to proceed:

1. To prepare for the assignment, familiarize yourself with the notational conventions in the appendix to the Heritage & Clayman textbook (pp. 283-287; also listed below). I strongly recommend that you also work through Professor Schegloff’s online transcription tutorial, linked at the bottom of the course website.

2. The call to be transcribed can be found at the Class Assignments link. To play it you need Quicktime Player, which is available as a free download from Apple.com and runs on both Macs and PCs. Both the .mov and the .wav versions will play within Quicktime on either platform, but only the .wav version will play in Windows Media Player.

3. The call is about 2:40 long, but do not transcribe the entire call; stop when the caller says”they’re grown men” (about one minute into the call).

4. You must transcribe in Courier font. Any proportionally-spaced font (like Times) will ruin the alignment of your transcript for things like overlapping speech. Use Courier only.

5. Refer to the speakers as Clr (for Caller) and 911 (for call taker) in your transcript. Follow the other formatting conventions outlined below.

6. Remember: your job is to represent, as accurately as you can, just what you hear them to have said and done — which is not necessarily what they “should” have said or done.

7. Your work will be evaluated by assessing the degree to which your transcript displays a) an adequate grasp of the level of detail at which we work, b) a grasp of what the symbols are used to represent, and c) a reasonable first effort to represent this stretch of talk.

If your internet connection does not work fast enough for the sound to come through well, go to the CLICC commons in Powell Library and run the data from there.

page1image3945216320page1image3945216656

This exercise is due Wednesday Oct. 17th by 10:00pm, via TurnItIn.

Your work should be a solo effort. Do not share files or compare your work with other students. Under no circumstances can you submit a transcript that is identical or similar to someone else’s.

page2image3947145520

Formatting the document
1. Set all page margins to 1”.

2. Set the font to Courier. This is important, because Courier is a fixed-space font, while others (e.g., Times, Palatino, Arial, etc.) are proportional fonts. In fixed-space fonts, all characters use the same amount of horizontal space. This allows all characters above and below each other to line up evenly on the page, which is critical when transcribing overlapping speech.

3. Set the font size to 10-point.

page2image3947184496page2image3947184768page2image3947185040page2image3947185376

Typing the transcript

1. Begin each line with four (4) spaces using the space bar.

2. After these four spaces, add a three-letter abbreviated speaker-identification, followed by a colon. In the example above, “DOC:” and “PAT:” refer to doctor and patient, respectively. For this assignment, use an abbreviation that makes sense, e.g., Clr (for caller) and 911 (for call taker).

3. After the speaker identification, add five (5) spaces before starting the speaker’s talk.

4. Transcribe until the end of the line, and then add a hard return to advance the cursor to the next line. In general, you should always hit the return key get to the next line; do not keep typing and do not use tabs to advance the cursor.

5. Before adding the next line of talk for the same speaker, use the space key to enter enough spaces to line it up with the previous lines. Do not use tabs or any other formatting device.

6. When your transcript is finished, go back and replace the first two spaces of each line (remember, there were four) with a two-digit line number (01, 02, 03 … 10, 11, 12).

Other suggestions

1. If possible, use earbuds or headphones when listening to the call. You’ll be able to hear details much more easily and clearly and your transcript will be more accurate.

2. Remember to transcribe what you hear (the words and sounds as actually produced by the speakers). People do not always speak perfectly or formally. Sometimes they contract words (as in “havin'” in line 01 of the example above) or leave them out altogether; and sometimes they stop, back up, and repeat or revise what they’ve said (as in line 04 of the example above). You should aim to represent what you actually heard, not what you should have heard.

3. Do not run a spell check on your transcript!

4. DO NOT LEAVE THIS EXERCISE UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE! IT WILL TAKE LONGER THAN YOU ANTICIPATE! Most people find it easier and get better results by working on the assignment in several shorter sessions rather than one long session.

Transcription Conventions

The typed or printed examples embody an effort to to have the spelling of the words roughly indicate how the words were produced. Often this involves a departure from standard orthography. In addition:

Punctuation is designed to capture intonation, not grammar, and should be used to describe intonation at the end of a sentence or some other shorter unit. Use the symbols as follows: Comma is for slightly upward ‘continuing’ intonation; question mark for marked upward intonation; and period for falling intonation.

Left-side brackets indicate where overlapping talk begins.Right-side brackets indicate where overlapping talk ends, or

marks alignments within a continuing stream of overlapping talk.

Numbers in parentheses indicate periods of silence, in tenths of a second.

Colons indicate a lengthening of the sound just preceding them, proportional to the number of colons.

A hyphen indicates an abrupt cut-off or self-interruption of the sound in progress indicated by the preceding letter(s) (the example here represents a self-interrupted “because”).

Underlining indicates stress or emphasis.
A “hat” or circumflex accent symbol indicates a marked pitch rise.

Equal signs (ordinarily at the end of one line and the start of an ensuing one) indicates a “latched” relationship — no silence at all between them.

Empty parentheses indicate talk too obscure to transcribe. Words or letters inside such parentheses indicate the transcriber’s best estimate of what is being said.

page4image3945341952

hhh .hhh The letter “h” is used to indicate hearable aspiration, its length roughly proportional to the number of “h”s. If preceded by a dot, the aspiration is an in-breath. Aspiration internal to a word is enclosed in parentheses. Otherwise “h”s may indicate anything from ordinary breathing to sighing, laughing, etc.

° Talk appearing within degree signs is lower in volume relative to surrounding talk.

((looks)) Words in double parentheses indicate transcriber’s comments, not transcriptions.

Well written respond to the questions (A2)

The work of finance professionals can go a long way toward promoting positive social change. The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) is a leading organization in promoting this direction in business. PRME has six principles, including “Values.” The “Values” principle states, “We will incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility as portrayed in international initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact” (PRME, n.d.). From this principle, many companies are utilizing “impact investing” to harness “the power of the capital markets to provide financial and social returns” (Ahern, 2015). Corporations can accomplish this by connecting sales to social campaign and nonprofit beneficiaries around the world. For example, Warby Parker’s “Buy a Pair, Give a Pair” campaign partners with VisionSpring to provide access to vision care and eyewear around the world (Warby Parker, 2015).

Review the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and consider how financial decisions can contribute to promoting positive social change.

In a 3-page paper, address the following:

  • How do finance and accounting play a role in ethics and sustainable positive social change?
  • How might you use accounting or finance to support this role that you described above?

Managing the Event – Incident Command System

Read:

The authors offer that the US has undertaken great efforts to be prepared for the next large-scale threat should and when it arises. They also offer that for such systems to be of value they need to be examined and assessed for response sufficiency. Therein can often be the problem. As the week’s writings go on to argue – it can be challenging if not impossible to accurately measure emergency preparedness.

Extending from your readings:

  • Do you agree with the author’s positions that assessing preparedness is challenging and less that accurate? State and support your position.
  • On the basis of your readings, what potential threat to the Homeland do you believe we are least prepared for?
  • Are there ways we could enhance our readiness and in terms of our resultant preparedness, how could we measure such readiness?

Must be a minimum of 250 words

Can you assist with power point

Create a 5- to 6-slide PowerPoint presentation that explores professional ethics and responsibilities. (Note: Websites such as Wikipedia are not acceptable academic sources.) You may use the slide notes function to explain slide contents as necessary. In your presentation, address the following topics: BBA 4751, Business Ethics 4

 professional ethics and responsibilities of intermediaries;

 professional ethics, responsibilities, and loyalty of managers; and

 professional ethics and responsibilities of employees to the community.

In addition to the information on professional ethics and responsibilities, provide at least one example of each topic above. Cite your sources, and create a reference slide using proper APA formatting. The title and reference slides are not included in the slide count.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina damaged the New Orleans and surrounding areas, news reports of groups of looters were announced. Oftentimes, when under the influence of a crowd, individuals will display aggressive or unlawful behavior that they would not otherwise participate in. This phenomenon is referred to as deindividuation.

Research and discuss the following:

  • Identify and describe a historical event in which the deindividuation phenomenon occurred.
  • Explain the process of deindividuation (e.g., how it works, what changes happen within the individual to allow for unusual behavior).
  • Discuss how deindividuation might also occur outside the presence of a crowd, such as in other settings in which a person feels anonymous.

Include at least 3 sources in your paper. Use in-text citations and a reference list according to APA-style guidelines.

Please submit your assignment.

Other Information

parole/probation

For your final project, you will select one of the three listed subdivisions of the Florida Department of Corrections to use as the basis for a performance assessment. This document holds some information for the organization and each subdivision, though you will be expected to perform your own research on the organization, comparable organizations, and trends in the field to determine opportunities and external threats.

Parole/Probation Subdivision (aka Community Corrections)

The roles of the Parole/Probation subdivision revolve around performing professional assessment and supervision of criminal offenders. Correctional probation officers are responsible for investigating, assessing, supervising, counseling, and/or classifying offenders. In addition to the FDC organizational mission statement, the Parole Subdivision has its own mission, The Community Corrections Department and its officers shall service all adult offenders and families, victims, law enforcement officers, agency representatives, and the public—with equal respect, dignity, and sensitivity. The Community Corrections Department will develop an array of comprehensive services addressing the needs of both inmates and the surrounding community.

This subdivision has recently been faced with some challenges, including lack of interdepartmental communication, low supervisor-to-subordinate ratio, obsolete information technology software, and an unreliable record management system. These impacts have led to a high employee turnover rate as well as gaps in accurate tracking of offenders. The department has a low rate of offenders and one of the best re-entry programs in the state. The surrounding community is satisfied with the level of service the department provides.

Your organizational assessment and recommendations report should answer the following prompt: How effectively is the criminal justice organization meeting its mission and established goals, and how can the organization improve its performance?

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Introduction: In this section, you will describe your selected criminal justice organization to set the stage for your performance assessment.

A. Describe your selected organization, providing specifics of the general purpose of the organization, the location, and any other relevant information necessary to set the stage for the performance assessment.

B. Describe the mission statement of your selected organization and its related goals or objectives. What are the specific goals or objectives set forth to deliver on the mission of your organization? For example, the mission of the New Jersey Department of Corrections is to protect the public by operating safe, secure, and humane correctional facilities.

II. Structure: In this section, you will analyze the overall structure of the organization to set the stage for your performance assessment. For the purposes of this project, you will select a subdivision of the agency on which to focus your performance assessment.

A. What are the departments or subdivisions into which your selected organization is divided, and how do these subdivisions work together as a whole in relation to the mission of the organization? In other words, each department or subdivision has its own goals, but how do all the departments or subdivisions work together to achieve the organization’s mission?

B. Describe your selected subdivision and outline the specific goals and responsibilities of the subdivision, describing how they align with the overall mission of the agency. Consider how the goals of the selected subdivision align with the mission of the agency.

C. Describe the key policies in place that run your selected subdivision of the organization, explaining how these policies align with the mission of the subdivision. For example, the subdivision might have specific rules and regulations within its operating procedures and laws that ensure the subdivision meets its established goals.

III. Assessment Plan: In this section, you will develop a plan to gather valid and reliable data in your performance assessment, and outline specific assessment strategies and sources of information.

A. Determine the organizational assessment strategy that would be most appropriate to use in your assessment of the selected subdivision of the organization. Justify your selection. For example, you might select an organization assessment plan or model, such as the systems model, to assess compliance and effectiveness of the subdivision with the mission.

B. Justify how your previously selected organizational assessment strategy will ensure you collect valid and reliable data in your performance assessment. For example, the systems model will allow you to examine the specific inputs such as resources, policies, and procedures that determine how far the organization is achieving its mission.

C. Outline the sources of data and information you will use to assess the organization’s performance, justifying your selection of sources. For example, you might use crime report statistics to identify areas of high crime rates, or you might interview specific individuals to assess the effectiveness of policies and procedures within the organization.

D. Performance Assessment: In this section, you will assess the performance of your selected subdivision in the organization in relation to the mission and goals of the overall organization by performing a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis.

i. Identify the major internal factors that positively and negatively affect the organizational performance. Justify your identifications. For example, a key internal factors may be the selection criteria for staff or clients.

ii. Identify the major external factors that positively and negatively affect the organizational performance. Justify your identifications. For example, key external factors may laws, legislators, and citizen inputs.

iii. Based on the previously identified internal factors, analyze whether or not the organization is maximizing its strengths and minimizing its weaknesses. Substantiate your claims. For example, consider the areas of the subdivision that have the most impact on success, such as the classification of offenders.

iv. Based on the previously identified external factors, analyze whether or not the organization is maximizing its opportunities and minimizing its threats. Substantiate your claims. For example, consider the areas that are most vulnerable in assuring success and how these can be turned into strengths, such as housing inmates in a reception area to adequately assess their needs, not simply classifying on offense criteria.

IV. Performance Report: In this section, you will develop recommendations to improve the performance of the organization, basing your recommendations on evidence from your performance assessment.

A. Determine where the organization is in compliance with its organizational mission. Substantiate your findings with evidence from your

performance assessment. In other words, where is the organization complying with its stated goals to move the organization toward its mission?

B. Determine where the organization is in noncompliance, or can improve its compliance with the organization’s mission. Substantiate your

findings with evidence from your performance assessment. In other words, where can the organization improve in complying with its stated

goals to move the organization toward its mission?

C. Provide specific recommendations to improve the organization’s performance in meeting its goals and mission. Justify your recommendations

with evidence from your performance assessment. For example, you might provide recommendations to bring areas of noncompliance into

compliance with the mission.

D. Explain how these recommendations might be implemented in the organization. Consider the short- and long-term approach to implementing

the recommendations. Consider the costs involved in implementing, the staffing necessary, or whether or not policies must be created.

V. Communication Strategies: In this section, you will recommend communication strategies for the leadership to communicate the findings and associated recommendations of the report.

A. Recommend who in the organization should receive the key information related to the report, justifying how this recommended distribution could improve organizational performance. Consider why some people should receive certain information, while others should not, or why all employees should receive the same information.

B. What communication strategies would you recommend the leadership use when communicating the previously identified information to the previously identified individuals in the organization? Justify your recommendations. Consider how your strategi es might change based on your target audience.

C. Provide recommendations to the leadership for how they can gather feedback from the employees on the previously identified recommendations to inform organizational performance, and explain how this feedback can inform continued improvement in the organization.

What strategies can be used to elicit feedback from the employees, and how will this feedback be used to improve the organization’s performance with respect to the previously outlined recommendations?

Your organizational assessment and recommendations report must be 8–10 pages in length (plus a cover page and references) and must be written in APA format. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins. Include at least four references cited in APA format.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING HEADINGS FOR EACH CRITICAL ELEMENT AREA IN YOUR FINAL PROJECT.
