Positive Psychology and Spirituality, psychology homework help

Dropbox Assignment

Assignment 2: Positive Psychology and Spirituality

Substance abuse counseling lends itself nicely to the integration of positive psychology and spirituality. While both of these therapy approaches have been explored for many years, the integration into substance abuse counseling is a relatively new development. As such, many clients may not be aware of the techniques in positive psychology and spirituality that can be of use in their recovery.

Juanita has been seeking treatment for her marijuana use from you for a month now. While she has significantly cut back on her substance use, she is having difficulty quitting and remaining abstinent for periods that last longer than a few days. In your counseling sessions, Juanita has mentioned that she feels very badly about herself—she feels guilty about being unable to quit and explains that she doesn’t think she is strong enough to quit altogether. She has also expressed nervousness that her boyfriend would no longer like her if she quit smoking, and she has expressed concern that if he leaves her, she wouldn’t be able to find a new boyfriend because she doesn’t believe she is pretty enough. Juanita is also unsatisfied with her job as a cashier at the local grocery store, but has expressed her opinion that she doesn’t think she is smart enough to get a better job. You know from Juanita’s history, that her mother was very critical of Juanita when she was a child and that her father was absent for most of her childhood. In high school, Juanita excelled at classes in biology and math, but she never attended college.

To help Juanita overcome her barriers to marijuana abstinence, write a summary of what the counselor should cover in the next meeting with Juanita. Ensure that you cover the following points:

Explain the concepts of positive psychology to Juanita.

Examine the goals of positive psychology and explain how this approach will help Juanita obtain sobriety, focusing specifically on the concerns and dissatisfactions she has expressed.

Design at least two exercises based on positive psychology for Juanita to work on in between counseling sessions.

Explain spirituality to Juanita, emphasizing the differences between spirituality and religion.

Examine how spirituality and positive psychology can work together to help Juanita achieve her goals.

Write a 4–5-page paper in Word format. Use scholarly resources, including the textbook to support your ideas. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Use the following file naming convention: LastnameFirstInitial_M4_A2.doc.

By Week 4, Day 7, deliver your assignment to the M4: Assignment 2 Dropbox.

⊛ What is the case? Offer a brief summary of the case and key points.

⊛ Explain why this case caught your attention.

⊛ What ethical dilemmas were inherent in the case that pertain to mass communication?

DISC300: death of the lecture

Watch the video, Death of the Lecture. (Links to an external site.)

Each of you will then post a question for class discussion as its own thread, so we should have 20 different threads and 20 different questions (at least). Then each of you should reply to several of the questions posted by your classmates. (Hit reply to this main post in order to create a new thread)

I won’t put exact numbers on the required involvement in terms of number of comments or a word count (people tend to “game” such systems). For example, if you write a really long comment and have a back and forth with several classmates and put in plenty of discussion, but only actually respond to one thread, that might be full credit. While responding with not well thought out, one-word responses to several questions doesn’t particularly add to discussion and may not receive a high grade.

The key is to demonstrate that you’ve put in some effort and thought and we can have a fruitful class discussion. This is going to be an ongoing trend through this semester. I suggest you use the first few assignments to calibrate your expectations. In other words, the first few assignments give you the chance to put out a certain level of effort and then receive feedback from me about whether that’s A or D level effort and for the rest of the semester we can all be on the same page.

This is perhaps the shortest assignment/lecture/video of the semester, but it’s quite relevant to all of us at the moment, so I do expect we will all have something to say. Don’t worry if you need to go off on a bit of a tangent or discuss things maybe not directly mentioned in this video, as long as it’s still close to the topic (i.e. related to online education).

You need to have your question posted by the due date (end of the day Monday the 30th), and I will grade the discussion Thursday. This is typically how this will go through the semester, with your main responses/questions posted by Monday, and then you have Tuesday, and Wednesday to engage in discussion, and by Thursday (so in this case, September 2nd). You can of course post prior to the due date, and engage in discussions prior to Monday. But knowing the procrastinating college student, many of the questions won’t even be posted until the due date, so we need some time built in for discussion to happen after that.

summary essay

Write a summary and response essay based on the article that you were assigned. The summary should be 5 paragraphs long and 4-6 sentences per paragraph. The paper must be in APA format. Here are some tips and suggestions to help you with your writing.

A summary/response is a natural consequence of the reading and annotating process. In this type of essay, writers capture the controlling idea and the supporting details of a text and respond by agreeing or disagreeing and then explaining why.

The first step after active reading is writing a summary. Writing summaries is a common practice in college. They pull together the general conclusions and approaches of experts who have done research in a particular subject. Summaries should be written in your own words although you could include short quoted excerpts if you decide the author’s or speaker’s words summarize a point most precisely. Try to use pertinent quotations from the source, working them in gracefully where appropriate. Probably the best way to write a summary is to ask your self the following questions:

–What issues are described, explained or resolved in this work?

–What is the controlling idea?

–What are the supporting details?

–What results or conclusions are made?

–What opinion does the author want readers to keep in mind about this topic?

–What information does the author use to convince readers?

After you have written your summary, double-check to be sure that all facts you included are correct.

a) State the author’s name and the title of the article you are summarizing in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary.

b) Express the author’s main idea in your own words in the first 1-2 sentences of the summary (no more than three words in a row from the text you’re summarizing.)

c) Identify main points that support the main idea. Write the main points in your own words (no more than three words in a row from the text.)

d) Use minor details (e.g. examples, explanations and specific details) only when needed to support the main points.

e) Arrange the ideas so the organization and transition words in the summary paragraph reflect the original text.

f) Show that you are summarizing someone else’s ideas with expressions like “According to” + author’s name or author’s last name + a signal verb.

Preparing a Response

Response, in this case, connects personal experiences, ideas, observations, and/or opinions with the article you have been actively reading. It provides you the opportunity to explain your thoughts about the author’s argument. To do this well, you need to consider how you “see” the article’s main idea in the real world, how it influences you or others, and what are its causes, effects, and potential solutions.

Two Typical Organizational Formats for Summary/Response Essays:

1. Present the summary in a block of paragraphs, followed by the response in a block:

Paragraph 1 – Intro/thesis
Paragraph 2 – Summary
Paragraph 3 and 4 – Agreement (or disagreement)
Paragraph 5 – Conclusion

Note: Some essays will incorporate both agreement and disagreement in a response, but this is not mandatory.

2. Introduce the essay with a short paragraph that includes your thesis. Then, each body paragraph summarizes one point and responds to it, and a conclusion wraps the essay up.

Paragraph 1 – Intro/thesis
Paragraph 2 – Summary point one; agree/disagree
Paragraph 3 – Summary point two; agree/disagree
Paragraph 4 – Summary point three; agree/disagree
Paragraph 5 – Conclusion

Many environmental organizational theorist have a central claim or conclusion to their arguments that organizations

Question 1:

Many environmental organizational theorist have a central claim or conclusion to their arguments that organizations, their success, their design, and their processes are mostly dictated by the environment. Write an essay explaining why environmental theorist believe this (that is explain the logic of their argument) and then write a critique of it in terms of whether or not you think they were correct? Are managers mostly constrained by the environment? Is the idea of managerial or organizational agency a myth? Be sure you use examples (made up or real) when both describing their theory and in your critique. You can also draw on any of the books we read to help you with your response. Good responses have details, examples, and draw from the material from the class including lectures, readings, postings, and movies.

Question 2:

Tett’s book on Silo’s identifies a major problem of many large organizations — the rise of isolated silos and a variety of problems that come from their isolation. She also suggests some cases where individuals and organizations have been able to “bust” these silos or think about them in different ways. Write an essay that uses organizational cultural and/or organizational environment approaches and make an argument that one of those two approaches does a better job finding solutions to the problems of silos as Tett sees them. To be specific, write an essay that first details the concept of Silos as offered by Tett, then briefly explains the problems they create, and then talks about some of Tett’s suggested solutions to the problem. Then make an argument that either the culture approach or the environment approach offers a meaningful way to see and deal with the problem of Silos.
