Imagine you are an Information Security Manager for a large national retailer. You have been hired to be directly responsible for the planning and oversight of IT audits. At the request of the Board of Directors, the CEO has tasked you with developing a plan for conducting regular audits of the IT infrastructure. • They allow employees to bring their own devices into the organization; however, they are subject to being searched upon entry and exit from the building.
• They enable remote access to corporate information assets for employees and limited access to extranet resources for contractors and other business partners.
• They enable wireless access at the main office and the stores.
• They process an average of 67.2 credit card transactions per hour every day at each location and via their corporate Website.

Using Camus’ “Create Dangerously” as a model for style and tone and a guideline for

structure, make an attempt to address the question “what does it matter who is

speaking?.

Camus’ talk/essay centers around the questions of what sort of art an artist should

produce, the role of the artist in society, and the role of art in society. He looks at the

position of the artist and reasons why artists might find themselves being criticized

for having produced particular works and then examines some assumptions that lie

beneath these criticism to see if those assumptions are correct. Based upon his

conclusions in those sections he then goes on to put together his own overall

conclusions.

I’m asking you to do the same sort of work in your essay, but rather than

considering the piece of art (the text) as the central part, we are thinking about how

the public’s view of the artist might shape the public’s opinion about the text.

Just as Camus ends up looking at the artist and society in his attempt to understand

what sort of art an artist should produce, I expect that you may need to think about

message, purpose, context, and audience when thinking about the way in which we

need to create our own ethos in communication.

Length wise, I expect that most writers would need to write for at least six pages

(double spaced, in MLA format) to attempt a satisfying, thoughtful and productive

response, and that a focused response would not go much longer than eight pages.

Your readers will all be familiar with the readings from our course, so those

readings would be useful for discussing examples of what you mean. You may also

use outside examples if you are trying to make a point not covered by one of our

class readings, but keep in mind that an outside text might require more explanation

and might push your paper longer that you prefer.

All examples that you refer to in your paper or that you use to help shape your own

explanations in the paper need to be identified in the paper and included in the

works cited.

And professor’s comments are: Good work on the writing and imitation side of things, but this essay is a bit off-topic for the prompt itself. Too much about art (not our subject) and not enough about ethos. I’ll grade this on quality of writing and polish if you choose to complete what you have, but it will not qualify as superior work if you are aiming for that in the portfolio. That would require a topic shift and deeper revision.

Preparation

Joanna Capella came to work for Educational Books (a small academic publishing house) in 2010 as an assistant to Arthur Moore, CEO. In 2012, Moore, her mentor, promoted her to vice president in charge of author relations. Her responsibilities included putting scholars under contract to write academic works. From 2012–2014 she failed to sign anyone upper management considered significant. In late 2014 she was reassigned to a position as vice president in charge of marketing, where her primary duty was to promote the company at book conventions. Upon reassignment, she promptly resigned from the company and brought suit for sexual harassment/constructive discharge.
It is undisputed by either side that Moore and Capella had a consensual sexual relationship, which ended in late 2011. It is also undisputed that Mr. Moore stated on two occasions to other executives that Ms. Capella “was a good lay.” Ms. Capella was not present for these statements. It is also undisputed that Mr. Jeffrey Marx, also a vice president, stated in 2013 that she “only had her job because of her personal relationship with the boss.” Sandy Alder, also a vice president is quoted as saying in front of three subordinates with Ms. Capella present that Capella “slept her way to the middle.” Lastly, one of these three subordinates, Victor Johnson, asked her on an occasion in early 2014, “Could I sleep with you to get a promotion?” He later apologized and said he was joking.
Educational Books’ executive handbook has a strong anti-harassment policy. The handbook also provides for a complaint procedure by filing an official complaint which, at the executive level, is sent to Mr. Moore for investigation and action. Ms. Capella did not ever file such a form.
