Definition of Critical Thinking

The first reading contained the following definition of critical thinking:

According to the article, Critical Thinking as Defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, (http://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/defining-cri…), “Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skillfully conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication, as a guide to belief and action. (Critical Thinking.org)

This definition uses words with which you may be unfamiliar. For our assignment this week, you will need to write an extended definition of each of the following words and demonstrate how these words apply to the critical thinking process and to your own experiences:

  • Conceptualizing
  • Analyzing
  • Synthesizing

Your assignment this week will be a five-paragraph essay, each paragraph should address the following:

Paragraph One

Begin by writing your own definition of critical thinking. Consider the following questions to guide your definition:

  • What does it mean to think critically?
  • What is the difference between thinking and thinking critically?
  • What do we gain or lose by thinking critically?

Paragraphs Two, Three, and Four

Once you have your definition of critical thinking, look up the definition for each of the three words listed above, and, in a paragraph for each word, use those definitions to describe how each of them apply to your definition of critical thinking. Be sure to identify the source or sources where you found your definitions. If you use any direct words from a source, be sure to place those words in quotation marks.

Paragraph Five

In your concluding paragraph, give an example or examples of a time or times when you applied critical thinking in your own life.

Your completed assignment should be written primarily in first person and should be 500-750 words in length. If you use sources in your writing, be sure to identify them. If you use any direct language from a source, be sure to place those words in quotation marks.

Gender difference in korean speech

Models of language and gender have been proposed:

  1. the deficit model “women are seen as disadvantaged speakers because of their early sex role socialization”
  2. the dominance model “women are seen as being in a powerless position in their interactions with men”
  3. the cultural difference model “the two different secs through childhood and adolescence from different conversation goals and styles”

Explain what words or speech forms were associated with each sex? Discuss the gender difference in descriptive words. which particular aspect of the social setting can you find for each gender? What can you reduce from this about the way Koreans may think or feel about the gender roles in society. Gender-related processes influence behavior, thoughts, and feelings in individuals; they affect interactions, when gender is regarded not as an attribute of individuals but a system of meanings, the processes by which difference are created and power is allocated can be understood by considering how gender is played out at three levels: societal, interpersonal, and individuals.

“Thirteen Original Colonies” Please respond to the following: PROVIDE SPECIFIC EVIDENCE FROM THIS WEEK’S WEBTEXT in your response. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES!

  • Using the Webtext, (Be sure to provide specific evidence from the textbook readings for this week for your response MINIMUM OF 150 WORDS) briefly describe three (3) characteristics for each of the English colonies located in the South, Middle, and New England regions Now state two (2) religious, business, agricultural, or political elements most likely to be found in South, Middle, and New England colonies that set them apart from each other.
  • Imagine you are a colonist, which region seems most appealing to create a new life in the New World.
  • Be sure to make a substantive comment to at least one of your classmate’s posts (MINIMUM OF 100 WORDS)

1. The English colonies are
separated into three groups known as the South, Middle, and New England
regions. Some of the colonies share similar characteristics, while others have
significant differences.

South

Virginia was the first colony founded in 1607 by John smith and
other colonist. The colony was named after Queen Elizabeth “the Virgin Queen”.
Virginia faced many struggles due to health concern, battles with natives, and
shortage of food. In order to survive iron, planting tobacco, sowing corn
became a source of income.

Maryland was created in 1634 and named by in honor of Henrietta
Maria. This colony also worked in the tobacco fields to gain profits. Maryland
is also known for adopting slavery which lawfully classified Africans as
property and not people.

The Carolinas (North and South Carolina) was founded by Virginia
Colonists known as the Lord of Proprietors. Both are identified as restoration
colonies. The northern part of the Carolina immigrants converted sap from pine
trees to turpentine that was utilized to protect ships. Slavery was dominant
with blacks in the Southern part of the Carolinas.

Georgia established in 1732 by a member of Parliament, James
Oglethorpe. The Parliament sponsored hundreds of settlers which named Georgia
the only government supported colonial project. In Georgia large quantities of
rice was gathered by slaves.

Middle

New York and New Jersey were also restoration colonies added by
Charles II. New York encompassed a variety of different people and religions
including French Protestants and Jews. In addition, slave conflict was very
high in New York.

Pennsylvania was invested in 1681 by William Penn as compensation
to settle a land debt with Charles II. It is also a restoration colony that
became the focus of British America. Quakers congregated to Pennsylvania to
present their religious beliefs without conflict.

Delaware was named after the Delaware River. Accepted the Quakers
religious Christian society. Participated in fur trading.

New England

Massachusetts was governed by John Winthrop allowed settlers to
honor their own religion without harassment. This colony was first known as an
English colony until the war against Great Britain.

Rhode Island was originated in the 1630 by Roger Williams who
deported from the Massachusetts colony because of religious acceptance for
nonbelievers was not supported. This colony refused to allow religious
diversity.

Connecticut was New Hampshire colonies were founded by Puritans
who did not support other religions.

If I was a colonist the middle region would be more appealing
because of the valuable natural resources for food and the versatile religious
independence.

2. Good morning everyone.

This subject about the English colonies is very interesting
to me

The English were Largely non-Catholics. Although some
tolerance was practiced in most colonies, the Puritans in Massachusetts
established an autocratic and restrictive religious leadership. Pennsylvania
mandated complete tolerance.

South Region – VA, Colony full of people
searching for gold, John Smith (A leader of England’s first settlement called
Jamestown) instituted a policy “No work, no food”,

Farming tobacco, the economic success came, which caused
problems with the Native’s that lived there.

The Governor of VA refused to help the frontier colonists,
due to make lost of money off the fur trade with the natives.

Catholicism was not popular during this time in England,
Anglican was the major religion. Lord Baltimore of Maryland established a
colony to provide religious freedom for catholics.

NC and SC in 1729 became separate colonies.

Middle
– New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey , New York, was named after the
Duke of York , The English granted large estates to a few favored families.
Admiral William Penn (PA named after him, Charles II owed the Penn family a
large debt) helped take Jamaica from the Spanish in 1655.

New England – Connecticut, Massachusetts, New
Hampshire Massachusetts, pilgrims came to the New World, they wanted to flee
religious persecution, they came from the ship called the mayflower, the
natives taught them how to use the resources of the land. The were separatists
from the Anglican church. Had a lower social status

The puritans wanted to create a pure form of the Anglican
church, had a higher social status.

If I were a colonist, I would have to say the colony that
seems most interesting to me would be Pennsylvania, they seemed like they had
more religious freedom, I think that’s the reason the Quakers moved there.
