Assignment 1: The Effects of War and Peace on Foreign Aid (Please use Somalia)

Use the Internet to research one (1) developing nation of your choice. Your research should include an examination of the effects that war and peace have on the distribution of foreign aid.

Write a three to four (3-4) page research paper in which you:

1.Assess the positive and negative effects that peace and war, respectively, have on the distribution of foreign aid in the developing country that you have selected. Support your response with concrete examples of each of the results that you have cited.

2.Analyze the specific actions that the leadership of the selected country has taken, through the use of its foreign aid from donor nations and international lending institutions, to relieve the severe problems caused by warfare.

3.Discuss whether or not the extension of foreign aid has successfully reduced poverty and the incidence of warfare in the selected country. Support your response with examples.

Use at least five (5) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia, blogs, and other nonacademic websites do not qualify as academic resources. Approval of resources is at the instructor’s discretion. Resources must also be within the last seven (7) years.

Use the Week 5 Data Set to create and calculate the following in Microsoft® Excel^®:

1. Conduct a goodness of fit analysis which assesses orders of a specific item by size and items you received by size.
   • Conduct a hypothesis test with the objective of determining if there is a difference between what you ordered and what you received at the .05 level of significance.
   • Identify the null and alternative hypotheses.
2. Generate a scatter plot, the correlation coefficient, and the linear equation that evaluates whether a relationship exists between the number of times a customer visited the store in the past 6 months and the total amount of money the customer spent.
   • Set up a hypothesis test to evaluate the strength of the relationship between the two variables.
   • Use a level of significance of .05.
3. Use the regression line formula to forecast how much a customer might spend on merchandise if they visited the store 13 times in a 6-month period.
4. Use the average monthly sales of 2014 ($1,310) as your basis to:
   • Calculate indices for each month for the next two years.
   • Graph a time series plot.
5. In the Data Analysis Toolpak, use Excel’s Exponential Smoothing option in order to:
   • Apply a damping factor of 0.5 to your monthly sales data.
   • Create a new time series graph that compares the original and revised monthly sales data.

Paper 3: Political Analysis

The last writing assignment involves demonstrating your understanding of how political parties try to sway voters into supporting them by applying course concepts concerning not only race and gender, but also ideas about the American Dream and political theory. For this paper, you will select four campaign commercials (two from a democratic candidate and two from a republican candidate) from the current election year to analyze for political messages (i.e., we should be afraid of X; women or minorities are disadvantaged by X and we wish to change it; big business needs to get out of politics; etc.) You can use ads from the primary or the current general election ads.

Analyze every part of the commercial. What kind of imagery do they use? How do they construct their argument? Who are they talking to? What hidden rhetoric is found in the commercial (i.e., if they try to argue for keeping Citizen’s United in place, how do they try to appeal to those it disadvantages)? How do they label their opponent? Or do they even address them at all? Who is doing the “speaking”? Is it average people or the politician themselves? Or is it someone showing snippets of their opponent saying something that could harm their campaign?

• Write in formal academic narrative form (i.e. use full sentences and paragraphs). Do not use bullet points.

• Use topic sentences (aka “focus sentences”) to begin each paragraph. Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. A topic sentence also states the point the writer wishes to make about that subject. The supporting details in the paragraph will develop, explain, or support the topic sentence.

I need a 8-10 page contribution paper on the conversation of Feminism. I have collected seven sources that need to be used in the paper, and cited correctly that I will post links to. My stance on the conversation is that Western Feminism is inadequate when applied globally although it is still necessary to be practiced in the western world. I also want to say that western feminists need to stand in solidarity with other women especially those from cultures much different than ours, and not have a “savior” mindset. We need to give other women a platform to speak on their own issues, and stand in support but not offer our “solutions”, especially in a superior-mindset type of way.

ASSIGNMENT

Purpose:

The Contribution Paper is a formal academic argument that contributes something to the conversation in which you have developed expertise over the semester. This paper will include a shortened version of the literature review that you have already written. You’ll use a review of the literature as a way of situating your argument in the conversation and showing your reader that you understand the conversation that is going on and that you have something to add to it. All of the claims you make must be grounded in good evidence, which will come from the sources that you have been working with for the last few weeks.

Remember that your goal is to simply add something valuable to the conversation. You do not need to solve the problem.Lots of really smart people have been talking and writing about your issue, so you don’t have to discover an answer or solution that they haven’t. But you may have discovered a new way to think about one part of the problem, and that is worth writing about.

Audience: Because you are joining a conversation with this paper, your primary audience is made up of those also interested in the same topic or body of research: the authors and readings you have cited, and your collaboration group. You’ll review the conversation for this audience in order to situate your own paper–to show how your paper contributes to the conversation. This academic audience expects a paper that uses the conventions of academic writing: claims supported by good evidence, formal tone, logical connections between ideas, paragraphs structured around topics that move the reader smoothly and logically through the paper, a thesis in the first section of the paper, in-text parenthetical citations, works cited, titles and headings, etc.

Paper Structure: The paper should follow the structure of those that you have been reading for the course, either as a part of the readings about higher education or those about your research topic.

1. It should begin with an overview of the topic in which you:

• identify the general themes and arguments of the conversation,
• identify major voices in the conversation,
• describe the important camps or ways of discussing the topic, and
• provide definitions for key terms.

The overview should help you situate your argument, your contribution. That means that you may not talk about every camp, or every theme. Instead, you’ll focus on those that are the closest to your argument. These may be the camps, themes, or arguments that you are building on, either by agreeing or disagreeing with the positions. You’ll also want to include those sources that provide evidence for your argument. Your thesis sentence will stem from this overview.

2. The body of the paper will be made up of your argument (contribution), organized logically so that, using the same evidence, the audience will come to the same conclusions as you. The body will be structured with sub-claims, supported by evidence, that provide support for the thesis. You may consider having multiple sub-sections in the body that will explicitly structure the progression of ideas and evidence for the reader. You must use standard in-text citations to identify the sources you are using. See OWL Purdue for help with MLA and APA formatting.

3. The conclusion of the paper needs to draw conclusions about the topic that were established in the introduction. It could also extend more broadly to implications of the research, new directions for the conversation to move in, impact to the general public, and the like.

4. Your paper must have a works cited or reference page

Format: The paper needs to be:

• 8-10 pages long, not including the works cited or reference page
• double-spaced,
• word-processed,
• using a standard font (no courier), and
• standard margins.

GRADING

I will consider the following when grading your paper

1. Reasoning and Evidence: Does the writer identify a conversation, make a claim that contributes to that conversation, and support that claim through clear reasoning and credible evidence?
2. Rhetorical Considerations: Does the writer demonstrate awareness of the audience he/she is writing to? Are his/her rhetorical choices effective for that audience?
3. Style: Is the writing cohesive and well organized? Does the writer use a variety of sentence structures effectively?
4. Mechanics: Is the paper largely free of mechanical errors (spelling, grammar, punctuation)?
