Modern day policing and society: where are we headed?

Assignment 1: Modern Day Policing and Society: Where Are We Headed?

Due Week 4 and worth 200 points

In this course we have been learning about the different eras of policing, from the inception of the first police force in 1829 to the current era of policing today. Based on the current climate, there is a level of distrust today between the police and the public. Riots, marches, and protests in response to high-profile police shootings have eroded the relationships that were built through community policing. With the hopes of improving police efficiency and finding new approaches to working together with the public, the country is again ready for a new era of policing.

Use the Internet and your textbook to research the different eras of policing up until today. Based on the role and function of police officers changing over the years, address the questions below relative to the current state of policing and where we are headed in the future. As an optional component of this assignment for extra credit, you may also interview a law enforcement professional to get his/her explanation on this topic.

Write a three to four (3-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Examine at least (2) of the eras of policing and discuss their main strengths and weaknesses.
  2. Examine at least two (2) issues facing law enforcement today and explain the impact both of these issues have on social order.
  3. Take a position on where law enforcement is headed in the next five (5) years. Discuss what you believe the future of policing looks like, and the main challenges you think law enforcement will face.
  4. Describe the role of the public in cooperation with the police, as you see it, in the near future in order to improve the relationship between these groups and to optimally work together in facing the future challenges you identified.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Distinguish the relationship of criminal justice to social justice and the wider notion of equity and fairness.
  • Summarize the mission of law enforcement in democratic societies and describe the structure of American policing today.
  • Summarize the current ethical issues faced by criminal justice professionals and future of the criminal justice system.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in criminal justice.
  • Write clearly and concisely about criminal justice using proper writing mechanics and APA style conventions.

Grading for this assignment will be based on answer quality, logic/organization of the paper, and language and writing skills, using this rubric.

How to be true to your word

In a 2 to 3 page, double-spaced essay (12pt font), write a personal and reflective essay and write it as an example of your best writing. Grammar, spelling, format, will all count. You must use at least one short quote from the reading “How to be True to Your Word” but no more than three short quotes and all quotes must be placed in quotation marks and followed immediately by proper APA citation information in parentheses. No other written sources for this essay should be quoted, copied, or summarized. No more than 40 words are allowed in any one quote. The full source information of the quote must also be listed at the end of the essay under work cited.

After reading the article “How to be True to Your Word”, write about the following: Based on your experience with someone in your life who was not true to their word, tell the story of what happened and how it affected the relationship (you may use a false name for the person). Explain what one thing makes untruthfulness so very wrong in your view. Is your explanation of what’s wrong with a broken promise a consequentialist or a non-consequentialist type of reasoning? Explain. At what point does Cat Thompson use consequentialist or non-consequentialist reasoning about what’s wrong with untruthfulness in the article on “How to be True to Your Word” (LINK (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.)? Identify and explain the use as one or the other type of reasoning. Support your answers from the article.

Psychological Models

These are the case studies that must be used in this assignment!

  • Caan’s 2012 article, “Defining Addiction, With More Humanity?,” from Contemporary Social Science, volume 7, issue 2, pages 159–165.
This article challenges the popular trend in North America to reduce addiction to a neuroscientific level without giving consideration to sociocultural factors.
  • Price, Risk, and Spitznagel’s 2001 article, “Remission From Drug Abuse Over a 25-Year Period: Patterns of Remission and Treatment Use,” from the American Journal of Public Health, volume 91, issue 7, pages 1107–1113.
The major finding from this research was that young drug abusers gradually achieved remission without treatment, even if they had been using heroin. “Spontaneous remission was the rule rather than the exception” (p. 1107).
  • Russell, Davies, and Hunter’s 2011 article, “Predictors of Addiction Treatment Providers’ Beliefs in the Disease and Choice Models of Addiction,” from the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment, volume 40, issue 2, pages 150–164.
This article demonstrates that U.S. treatment providers are more inclined to consider addiction a disease whereas U.K. providers are more likely to see addiction as a choice, based on their answers to the Addiction Belief Scale. This has implications for training addiction professionals in the United States.
  • The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism’s 2009 article, “Alcoholism Isn’t What It Used To Be,” from NIAAA Spectrum, volume 1, issue 1, pages 1–4.
This article is an acknowledgement from the NIAAA that “about 75% of persons who recover from alcohol dependence do so without seeking any kind of help, including specialty alcohol (rehab) programs and Alcoholics Anonymous” (p. 2).
  • The Psychological Models

For this assignment, imagine you are a counselor working in a psychological model treatment program. Select one of the case studies you were introduced to in Unit 1 to represent your “client,” who is seeking help from your program. You may choose the same one that you used for The Disease Models assignment, or you may choose to use a different case study.

    Assignment Instructions

Complete the following sections for this assignment:

    • Introduction—In this section of the paper:
      • Identify the client from the case study and briefly summarize the client’s demographic characteristics and addictive behavior history that are relevant to the psychological models of addiction. This section sets the stage for the next sections.
    • Applications of Psychological Models—In this section:
      • Apply your understanding of one or more of the psychological models of addiction to your client. Do client demographics and history suggest that your client suffers from a psychological model of addiction? Based on your interpretation, what psychological model treatment strategies might you recommend for this client?
    • Sociocultural Factors and the Psychological Models—Finally, in this section:
      • Describe how sociocultural factors (poverty, education, drug laws, media portrayal of addiction and treatment, and support for harm reduction methods like methadone maintenance and needle exchange programs) may affect the client’s perception of the problem and the addictive behavior. Does the media present psychological models of addiction with the same support shown to the medical, pharmaceutical, and recovery industries? If not, how could that affect the client’s acceptance of psychological models of addiction treatment?
      • Describe sociocultural factors that may contribute to the addictive behavior as well as factors that may be helpful in overcoming the addiction from the perspective of the psychological models of addiction.

    Assignment Requirements

    • Length: The paper should be 2–3 pages, excluding the title page and resources page.
    • References: Throughout your paper, apply relevant research findings from scholarly literature using in-text citations to support your reasoning. Include references for each of your citations in a separate reference page at the end of your paper.
    • Turnitin: Prior to submitting, submit your paper to Turnitin, which will help ensure that you have given proper credit for the information presented in the paper.

In addition look through The Psychological Models Scoring Guide to ensure you have met all of the criteria for the assignment.Note: Your instructor may also use the Writing Feedback Tool to provide feedback on your writing. In the tool, click the linked resources for helpful writing information.

Sampling-Probability v Non-Probability and Samples of Validity Generalizations

There are 2 discussions separate here. Please see the attached file for complete directions.

Discussion 1

Probability sampling is used to assist researchers in generalizing from observed cases to unobserved cases. As a research method, probability sampling is a method of selection in which each member of a population has a known chance or probability of being selected. If it is the case that all members of a population are similar in all respects, there is no need for sampling procedures. A sample must contain essentially the same variations that exist in the population. The original sampling method must be known to evaluate the quality of a sample and findings based on that sample’s responses and behavior, and findings will only be as generalizable as the sample is to the original larger target population.

The purpose of this discussion is to understand that there are various methods of sampling and that a successful study relies on the thoughtful sample planning to choose the best research method to effectively investigate social processes without having to consider every setting or person. Based on your reading assignment and any additional research needed, address the following in your main post:

  1. Explain, using examples, how sampling as a research method is used for statistical data analysis in criminology or criminal justice.
  2. Differentiate between the advantages and disadvantages of probability-based sampling designs and nonprobability-based designs.
  3. Explore whether any of the research described in Chapter 5 of your Fundamentals of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice text with a nonprobability-based design has been conducted instead with the probability-based design.

Discussion 2

Various sampling designs are available to suit different research and purposes populations. For example, although simple random sampling is logically the most fundamental probability sampling technique, it is not often in practice. Systematic sampling employs a sampling frame for selection of units that appear at a certain specified interval. This research method is, however, the functional equivalent to the simple random sampling method. The stratification method is valuable because it improves how representative a sample is by reducing the sampling error. When selecting adequate numbers of certain types of subjects who are relatively rare in the population being studied, disproportionate stratified sampling can be particularly useful. Finally, the method of multistage cluster sampling is most often utilized when there exists no list of the members of an entire population.

In Chapter 5 of Fundamentals of Research in Criminology and Criminal Justice, you learned about the three main types of probability sampling. Using your library research skills and what you have learned about sampling methods, research scholarly journal articles to find one that describes criminological research using a sample drawn from some population and respond to the following in your main post:

  1. Describe the type of probability sample used in the study.
  2. Draft a problem statement for a research topic relevant to criminology that could be used in conjunction with the probability sampling method you shared.
  3. Differentiate the strong and weak points in how the sample was drawn in terms of how they may affect the success of the study.
  4. Analyze your level of confidence in the validity of generalizations about the population based on the sample.

Culture-Assignment

Cultural Activity Report- please use your own words… your own experience… relate to our class Humanities World Culture…

The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.

  1. Visit a museum or gallery exhibition or attend a theater, dance, or musical performance. The activity (museum or performance) should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
  2. Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
    • Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the event.
    • Provide specific information and a description of at least two (2) pieces.
    • Provide a summary of the event and describe your overall reaction after attending the event.
    • Use at least the class text as a reference (additional sources are fine, not necessary unless required by your content). Your report should include connections you make between things observed in your activity and things learned in the course and text.

Visiting a Museum

  • It makes sense to approach a museum the way a seasoned traveler approaches visiting a city for the first time. Find out what is available to see. In the museum, find out what sort of exhibitions are currently housed in the museum and start with the exhibits that interest you.
  • If there is a travelling exhibition, it’s always a good idea to see it while you have the chance. Then, if you have time, you can look at other things in the museum.
  • Every effort should be made ahead of time to identify a museum that has items and works one can easily connect to our class.
  • Make notes as you go through the museum and accept any handouts or pamphlets that the museum staff gives you. While you should not quote anything from the printed material when you do your report, the handouts may help to refresh your memory later.
  • The quality of your experience is not measured by the amount of time you spend in the galleries or the number of works of art that you actually see. The most rewarding experiences can come from finding two or three (2 or 3) pieces of art or exhibits which intrigue you and then considering those works in leisurely contemplation. Most museums have benches where you can sit and study a particular piece.

Attending a Performance

  • Check your local colleges to see if there are any free or low-cost performances or student recitals. Student performances are generally of almost the same quality as professional performances, but typically cost much less. However, performances of high school level or lower will not meet this requirement.
  • Try to do a quality performance that fits the class subject matter well. Sorry—but this is not for pop music or rock music, rap, country music, gospel music, comedy routines, your kid’s dance recital, your international friend’s wedding, high school plays, renaissance fairs, etc. Instead, think of college level or professional recitals, string quartets, symphony orchestras, opera, jazz, some stage dramas, etc.

  • Any questions about whether a performance activity fits the course and assignment well enough will be decided by the instructor when the student seeks approval for an activity. Any alternative activity outside the normal ones listed here, such as for those limited by disability or distance, will be determined by the instructor. Normally, we do not expect students to travel over an hour to get to an approved activity.
  • Unlike visiting a museum, where you can wear almost anything, people attending performances are often expected to “dress up” a bit.
  • Take a pen or pencil with you and accept the program you are offered by the usher; you will probably want to take notes on it during or after the performance.
  • Turn off your cell phone before entering the auditorium. Do not use your phone to record the music or to take pictures or videos. To play it safe, turn the phone off.
  • Most long musical performances have at least one (1) intermission. If the lights start blinking, it is the sign that the performance is about to begin.
  • Look for very specific things (such as a particular piece of music or the way certain instruments sounded at a specific time) which tend to stand out as either enjoyable or not enjoyable. Be sure to take notes of the things which you find enjoyable as well as the things which are not enjoyable.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA Style format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions. (Note: Students can find APA style materials located in the Additional Resources section of their Student Center within their course shell for reference)
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Explain the importance of situating a society’s cultural and artistic expressions within a historical context.
  • Examine the influences of intellectual, religious, political, and socio-economic forces on social, cultural, and artistic expressions.
  • Use technology and information resources to research issues in the study of world cultures.
  • Write clearly and concisely about world cultures using proper writing mechanics

Activity 12

  • Reflection and Discussion Forum Week 12
  • Assigned Readings: Chapter 13.
  • Research and Development Projects
  • Initial Postings: Read and reflect on the assigned readings for the week. Then post what you thought was the most important concept(s), method(s), term(s), and/or any other thing that you felt was worthy of your understanding in each assigned textbook chapter.Your initial post should be based upon the assigned reading for the week, so the textbook should be a source listed in your reference section and cited within the body of the text. Other sources are not required but feel free to use them if they aid in your discussion. Also, provide a graduate-level response to each of the following questions:
    1. Pick a major U.S. industry, such as automobiles or computers, and discuss the lapses in technology and innovation on the domestic front that permitted foreign competitors to get a foothold and, in some cases, a dominant share of the market. Who or what do you think was to blame for this situation?
    2. In the mid-1980s, General Motors undertook a $5 billion program to introduce robotics and computer-integrated manufacturing techniques into many of its assembly plants. The results were disappointing, to say the least. Enormous technical problems dogged the program from the beginning, and the ultimate gains in productivity were decidedly modest. What do you think went wrong? Why? From the long-term perspective, was the automation program a good idea?

[Your post must be substantive and demonstrate insight gained from the course material. Postings must be in the student’s own words – do not provide quotes!] [Your initial post should be at least 450+ words and in APA format (including Times New Roman with font size 12 and double spaced). Post the actual body of your paper in the discussion thread then attach a Word version of the paper for APA review]Submitting the Initial Posting:Your initial posting should be completed by Thursday, 11:59 p.m. EST. Response to Other Student Postings: Respond substantively to the post of at least two peers, by Friday, 11:59 p.m. EST. A peer response such as “I agree with her,” or “I liked what he said about that” or similar comments are not considered substantive and will not be counted for course credit.[Continue the discussion through Sunday,11:59 p.m. EST by highlighting differences between your postings and your colleagues’ postings. Provide additional insights or alternative perspectives]Evaluation of posts and responses: Your initial posts and peer responses will be evaluated on the basis of the kind of critical thinking and engagement displayed. The grading rubric evaluates the content based on seven areas:Content Knowledge & Structure, Critical Thinking, Clarity & Effective Communication, Integration of Knowledge & Articles, Presentation, Writing Mechanics, and Response to Other Students.
