Experiment Assignment

ASSIGNMENT 1 and 2: LAB REPORTS

Due in Weeks 5 and 10 and worth 240 points each.

You are a scientist in your life and in the real world. Part of the fun of learning about the world and how it works is going beyond the text and seeing it for yourself in action.

This quarter you are studying 4 major fields of science Physics, Chemistry, Earth Science and Astronomy. For two (2) of those fields, you will perform an experiment and create a lab report.

At the end of each chapter you are assigned to read this quarter, there are “ACTIVITIES (HANDS-ON APPLICATION)” where you can find your “experiment.”

Don’t let this be the only place you look! Venture to YouTube or the Science channel’s show “Outrageous Acts of Science.” If you have wanted to put a Mentos in a bottle of Diet Coke – this is the time! If you want an excuse to go camping or hiking, star gazing or doing a geological study might just be the way to go. You could even make up one of your own! Include your family, your friends, your pets! Have fun!

CAUTION: Please make sure that you have the proper safety equipment when conducting any experiment. This generally includes but is not limited to, eye protection in the form of goggles or safety glasses and clothing that is not loose fitting.

For each lab report you must:

  1. Describe the purpose and hypothesis of the experiment. (What are you trying to prove or see?)
  2. List/show the materials used.
  3. Describe the procedure. (Describe the steps of the experiment and what you did so that a classmate could replicate if they wanted.)
  4. Describe and display the results. (What happened? Hint: Some of the data may be easier to show in charts or with graphics.)
  5. Answer the following explanatory and interpretative questions:
    • Why do you think you achieved the results that you did?
    • Did anything unexpected happen?
    • Do the data/results support the hypothesis? Why? (Show using specific references to the data.)

This Lab Report may be submitted in any format: Video, PowerPoint (with notes pages as needed or screen capture as wanted), Word Document, etc., or any combination that would allow you to show not only the details of the experiment and data but what you have learned from doing it. Use your own words throughout.

All assignments, regardless of format, must give citations, references and/or credit and use 2-3 academic quality sources. For example if it’s not an original experiment and you were inspired by someone else’s video, or copied it exactly, let us know which one etc. The important thing is that your sources be documented clearly in a way that your sources can be checked by the reader (and verified by the instructor). APA style is recommended, but not required.

BIAM 510 week 5 case study

You will need to complete the following items before you start your five tasks for this case study. An example of a a completed case study is attached.

  • Check out Figure 10-3 – attached.
  • Read attached pages 363–363.
  • Print out Figure 10-3, and find the estimated median tenure. (Hint: See Figure 10-2 on the previous page.)

Task 1: (a) What is your estimated median tenure? (b) How did you generate it? (c) How long has our longest tenured customer been with the company? (d) What would you tell a senior manager with little or no statistical background is its meaning (three or four sentences at most)?

Task 2: Satisfy yourself that the original distribution data should be approximately as follows. Percent Survival Tenure (Years)

100 0
87 1
75 2
68 3
60 4
55 5
53 6
50 7
49 8
47 9
45 10
45 11
45 12

Describe the method used to satisfy yourself.

Task 3: Reread the paragraph above Figure 10-4. The author talks about the 10-year average lifetime of each group as being 6.1 and 3.7 years. It might appear that he just pulled the numbers out of the air, but he actually described how to calculate them earlier in the paragraphs above and below Figure 10-3. We are going to duplicate this approach using Excel. Use the Excel file tenure.xlsx in Files. Check out the first set of columns. It represents the curve in Figure 10-3. Using the same method you used to satisfy yourself in Task 2, fill in the two empty columns and compute the average customer lifetime during the first 10 years. Don’t worry if you did not get exactly the same numbers as the author. Your method was an approximation. Note that the units in Figure 10-4 are not really months (that’s just a label) but are in fact years. You might find Figure 10-2 easier to work with than Figure 10-4.

Task 4: Generate a chart with both survival curves (high end and regular) on it, and embed it in your Word document.

Task 5: Write a paragraph describing these results that your senior manager mentioned above would understand.

Option #1: Anger Management Services

Jane is a mental health counselor working with adults who have been arrested for domestic battery. She works in a program funded by a non-profit organization whose mission is to prevent domestic violence by teaching anger management skills. Isaiah, a 24-year old male, has been referred to her for anger management counseling after he was arrested for punching his girlfriend during an argument the previous week. According to the arrest report, Isaiah didn’t think it was wrong to punch his girlfriend because, in his words, “She made me mad.” This is Isaiah’s first arrest. He has been required by the State Attorney to attend eight weeks of counseling in exchange for deferring, and ultimately not filing, criminal charges. Isaiah is restrained from returning to his girlfriend’s home, and he is currently sleeping on the sofa of a friend. Isaiah must leave his friend’s home and find another place to stay in two weeks. Additionally, he missed two days of work following his arrest and subsequent incarceration, and faces suspension from work and loss of pay for one week due to his unexcused absence. If Isaiah is charged with a criminal offense, he will lose his job. Isaiah has never had any counseling and was raised by his mother, who taught him that counseling was “for crazy people.”

Write an essay that addresses the following items:

Describe Isaiah’s physical, emotional and monetary needs.

Identify three challenges Jane will face while working with Isaiah.

What can Isaiah plausibly expect from Jane and the system?

Evaluate the likely successes and shortcomings of the services provided.

Describe the criteria you use to evaluate successful service delivery.

Describe one model or theory (i.e., Maslow’s needs theory, situational or developmental) that could help Jane offer support for Isaiah’s problems. Explain how Jane might apply the theoretical concept.

Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least one additional credible source to support your analysis and position. The CSU-Global Library is a good place to find this credible source. Your paper should be 3-4 pages in length with documentation and citations conforming to APA Requirements.

****(For this exercise – – Describe the approach you will use to select the “right” person for this position.  What do you want to know about these individuals that you do not currently know?  What are the critical issues that will guide your choice?)

You are that Strategic Business Unit executive Dr. Henman
describes on pages 166 and 167.  You lead
a product division of a major multi-national consumer electronics company.  You report directly to the CEO and have
profit and lost (P&L) responsibility for a division that designs, produces
and distributes a variety of products in the audio entertainment segment of the
worldwide consumer electronics market.
Among your current products are radio receivers of all types, CD
players, MP3 players, components for home entertainment systems, car stereo
components, boomboxes, amplifiers, speakers and even clock radios.

You have a functional organization of over 10,000 that spans
many time zones. Your business unit designs its products in the U.S. and
manufactures them in Asia. Your primary markets are in North America and
Europe.  Your direct reports include a
CFO who leads the Finance organization and VPs for Marketing, Engineering,
Supply Chain Management, Operations, Legal & Contracts, Human Resources,
Information Technology, and Quality & Performance Excellence.

Your VP of Engineering has been with you for 2 ½ years and
was just last month selected by the CEO and Board to become the head of one of
the other divisions of the corporation. She will be taking the new assignment
in three weeks.  You have to find her
replacement and convince the CEO to approve your choice.

You weren’t taken completely by surprise by this move; in
fact you recommended your subordinate for this new role.  You have been her mentor of sorts for the
last 18 months, put her in the lead position on a critical new product roll-out
and coached her on what she needed to learn and do to reach the next level ( in
reality you were grooming her for your job … just in case the CEO position came
open).

You have narrowed your search for a new VP of Engineering
down to three excellent candidates.  They
are 1) John Adams, a seasoned leader
within the current Engineering organization,  2) Mark Lawson, the Senior Engineering
Manager of the new products development group, and 3) Susan Hernandez, a Senior
Engineering Manager at Cre8, your #1 competitor’s product design organization.  You know Adams and Lawson quite well.  You are acquainted with Hernandez through a
trade association and are aware of her excellent reputation in the industry.

John Adams has been with the company for 15 years.  He is 55 years of age and has a BS degree in
Mechanical Engineering as well as a MS in Engineering Management from Southern
Methodist University.  Earlier in his
career he was an innovator in packaging design.  In the past few years he has driven process
and technology selection that has significantly reduced the production cost of
several of the company’s “flywheel” products.

Mark Lawson has been with the company 8 years and he is 46
years of age.  He is an electrical
engineer by training and received his MBA from Texas A&M University – Commerce
two years ago.  Mark has a reputation as
something of a visionary, an inspiring team builder and a team player.  His intuition and insight on product features
that Customers will “pay extra” for is in a word, uncanny.  New products his teams have brought to the
market in the last three years account for slightly more than half of the
division’s current annual sales.

Susan Hernandez has been with your competitor for 4 years
and is 38 years of age.  Her educational
background is in Software Engineering and she holds a MBA from Stanford
University.  Susan has worked for
several high-tech firms in Silicon Valley.
With the exception of Cre8 she has not stayed with any of her employers
for more than 3 years.  She has been
something of a “star performer” for Cre8 and is that rare mix of engineering
expertise, artist and unabashed “marketeer”.
In fact, the latest MP3 player her group launched 6 months ago is
“kicking your butt” in sales.

“For this exercise – – Describe the approach you will use to
select the “right” person for this position.
What do you want to know about these individuals that you do not
currently know?  What are the critical
issues that will guide your choice?”

Please cover the following points:

  1. What are possible client fears or apprehensions regarding hypnosis including myths?
  2. What are you most anxious about in learning and ultimately using hypnosis?

  4. How do you see yourself utilizing hypnosis?

Your assignment should be 1-2 pages plus title and reference pages

2 parts to an ethics discussion. 100 words per part.

The information that you will need for the discussion can be found in Case 25, p. 97and Case 9, p. 110 of Thinking Critically About Ethical Issues. For one of these cases, identify the parties and the moral issue(s) at stake, keeping an eye out for similarities that it shares with the other cases. Concentrate on identifying the rights that are at stake. Are they liberty rights? Claim rights? If claim rights, against whom are the claims addressed? Try also, to see if there are any duties of natural laws that you think are relevant.

Part II

In this week’s module we saw that the notion of liberty rights evolved out of medieval scholars’ reinterpretation of Roman law on the various forms of relation one can bear to property. The notion of a right that was developed was one that asserted an area of control over one’s life and was likened to the strongest form of property ownership recognized in Roman law. Do you believe you are related to yourself as to property? What are the implications of this view?

In this week’s AVP, you were asked the question ‘Do you think that you can use natural law to argue against the legitimacy of slavery? Why or why not?’ Provide your answer to that question here. The only citation that is allowed is the book Ethical choices by Richard Burnor and Yvonne Raley.

  • Burnor, R., & Raley, Y. (2011). Ethical choices: An introduction to moral philosophy with cases.
