FORMAT OF AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY

An annotated bibliographic citation is made up of two parts:

The citation (see Chicago handout for proper formatting)

The annotation – a 4–6 sentence critical summary of the work.

o Mention why it is useful

o Indicate strengths and/or weaknesses of the source

o Evaluate the overall reliability of the source; to do this, look at:

§ The author’s conclusions and how he/she arrived at them

§ The references they consulted

o Describe your reaction to the source

1. What are some of the defining features of the political, religious, social and economic situation on the Iberian Peninsula during the early medieval period? 2. Discuss some of the many ways in which the historical circumstances of the period, referred to in the question posed above, had an impact on the art and architecture produced in Portugal. Please describe specific works of art and architecture that support your ideas. 4. Mozarabic art and architecture is one of the most important contributions of the Iberian Peninsula to the history of medieval art in Europe. Please discuss your understanding of Mozarabic art from your readings and, again, provide specific examples from Portugal from the lecture notes and PowerPoint. Also, please try to characterize Romanesque art and architecture as it emerged in Portugal. What were some of the ideological implications of the use of this style which replaced Mozarabic?

Effective communication is more than something that the project manager must schedule. It is more like a means of doing business. The project manager will not only need to communicate with his or her staff; he or she will also need to communicate with his or her supervisors and with the primary stakeholders to report back progress or obstacles. It can be argued that the most important quality of a project manager is good communication skills. Without effective communication, the project manager risks the disintegration of the project rather than integration of the project.

Using what you know about your stakeholders, develop a communication management plan for the IRTC project. This should identify the project stakeholders who must be reached. For each group of stakeholders or individuals, describe the communication mechanism, the frequency of communication, the format, other parties involved, the initiator’s responsibilities, and the recipients’ responsibilities. Explain your rationale for your plan.

Theme Reading/Activity 1

Read the following excerpt from Peter Elbow’s Writing Without Teachers (1973). After reading, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and try to freewrite as Elbow describes it. Use a pen and paper, not a word processor (this will let you write a little slower, emphasize, underline, scribble, not be bothered by autocorrect etc). Don’t stop for anything. Don’t put down your pen until the timer goes off. To make it easier to get started, try responding to this question: “Who are you?”

Once the timer goes off and you have completed your freewrite, take a minute to read it over. Where do you repeat yourself, change topics, ask questions, babble etc. In other words, what are some things you notice about your writing. Did you write any answers to the question of “who are you?” that perhaps you didn’t expect?

After reading it over, post a paragraph summary of the freewrite here. This summary allows you to share the parts of your freewrite you think are interesting and keep private the parts that are personal. After the summary paragraph, include a paragraph of reflection. How did this exercise work out for you? Did you find it difficult? Interesting? Entertaining? Frustrating? Most importantly: do you think this freewriting method could help lead you to topics worth researching later on in this class?

Theme Reading/Activity 2

Read the following excerpts from Thomas King’s The Truth about Stories (if you’re pressed for time, focus on the first 10 pages) and Jim Corder’s “Argument as Emergence, Rhetoric as Love” (the first 3 sections are most important). As you read, try and form connections between the two arguments. How are they similar? How are they different? What purpose does each one serve and for what audience are they written?

Last week you responded to Peter Elbow’s freewriting task by attempting to answer the question “Who are you?” This week, think about your identity in terms of the stories/narratives that you tell about yourself and that society tells about you. You might think about how you would answer the question of “Who are you?” as compared to how different people might answer it for you. How would your parents answer it? Your best friend? Your classmates? Stranger on the bus? What stories/narratives inform your answer and what stories/narrative inform theirs? What power do these stories or narratives hold? What responsibilities do they come with?

Post a response here that addresses some of these questions. Your response can take the form of structured paragraphs (around 250 words) or it can be more creative (personal narrative, poetry, comics, music, video, collage, etc). Use whatever genre best makes your point. Be sure to finish your response with a reflection on how contemplating your identity in forms of stories/narratives from a variety of perspectives might lead you to discover a research topic of interest for this class.
