  • Search the library and the Internet and research a problem solving court (i.e. drug court, veterans court, teen court, re-entry court or homeless court)
  • Each team member will address the following in 250-500 words individually:
    • Generally speaking, what are some of the criminological theories that serve as a foundation for these specialty courts? Explain.
    • You have been tasked to create a new problem solving court that addresses a special type of offender. Discuss the components of the court and its approach to dealing with these special offenders based upon criminological thought.
    • Remember to post your submission as soon as possible in order to allow enough time to complete the Group Portion of the project.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style..
  • What will be the most challenging element of cognitive restructuring in this case? Explain. In a 3 point slide show from this paper made seperatly.
  • While reviewing problem solving courts, I have found that their foundation is to develop programs that could help criminals find the root of their problem and plan to rehabilitate themselves. Each court has their own techniques in providing help to criminals. These courts usually focus on certain components with the first being 1) a nonadversarial judicial process where the offender confesses to the crime, 2) immediate intervention that focuses on outcomes, 3) intensive interaction between the judge and the offender, 4) an interdisciplinary team approach that might include psychological and social workers who will coordinate services for the offender, and 5) a set of clearly defined rules and goals. The ultimate goal is to keep them from being incarcerated. Teen Court was my favorite to read about. They try to help teens to assume responsibility for their behavior by using the five components above in a specific problem solving court depending on the area of the offender’s crime. Within Teen Court, Bully Court could be set up to only deal with offenders who have committed a crime that involves the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of bullying. Bully Court would be a type of problem solving court that deals with bullies and why they resort to aggressive behavior towards others. Two different criminological theories that would serve as a foundation of Bully Court would be the Psychological Theory and the Sociological Theory. After the defendant confesses to the crime and goes before the judge, an immediate intervention would be set up that would include various members of a team that would select services and define rules that need to be followed and to set specific goals that must be attained. This might include sending the defendant to counseling, group therapy, and/or anger management classes. Then, the offender would need to undergo certain testing. This would include psychological testing to look for a personality disorder, an emotional maladjustment, and/or a particular psychological trait that attributes to the bullying. It could also be necessary to have social psychological testing to look for certain behavior issues, lack of self-discipline, and cognitive issues in a group setting. After meeting with the judge in the Bully Court and testing is complete, an interdisciplinary team will be set up to provide services. A plan will then be put in place that sets up the goals the defendant must meet and the rules that the defendant must follow. The goals could include things like doing community service, group meetings with a counselor and other bullies, listening and viewing to victim statements, or other methods of trying to atone for their crime because they need to make amends and continue to prove that this type of intervention has helped them to become a better member of society and somehow proven that the journey that led them down the path to committing a crime of physical, mental, and emotional abuse to others will be from this day forward altered.

community action

Final Paper Instructions:

  1. The
final case study should include four sections (Symptoms, Diagnosis,
Cure, and Prevention). Each section should be about 1 page in length.
Your entire paper must be 4-5 pages in length, not counting the title or
reference pages, which must be included. Your paper must follow theCSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.
  2. You
must cite and integrate at least 2 credible sources in each of the four
sections of the paper. You may use readings other than the textbook to
meet this requirement. The paper should be based on references to
scholarly materials (rather than on introductory textbooks, popular
website writings, or musings, for example) and should support your
    claims with evidence.
  3. Incorporate into this final plan any classmates’ critiques that you found useful as well as your instructor’s feedback.
  4. List
the key community members or partners that you plan on contacting, with
an explanation why these individuals or organizations make sense as
potential partners. This could include your list of potential partners
created in week 4 Critical Thinking Assignment Option #1, or your
interview of one key partner completed in week 4 Critical Thinking
    Option #2.
  5. Include a special emphasis on either the demographics
of the affected population or the economic implications, depending on
what Critical Thinking assignment you completed for Week 5.
  6. Include
a realistic timeline for your plan. Discuss the time needed for
campaigning, education, funding, building, and implementation. Use ideas
created during week 6 Critical Thinking Assignments, either the option
for annotated bibliography or that for the brainstorming draft feedback.

Final Instructions for the Handout:

  1. The handout that you will distribute to audience members describes the problem in your community and your action plan.
  2. You
may design this as an outline of your presentation or as a brochure to
accompany your presentation with highlighted key points.
  3. The
purpose of this handout is both to educate the audience about the issue
and to help them follow along with you as you speak. Keep in mind that
in real life you will have limited time to convince people of the
gravity of the situation and to come on board with their support, so you
want to be persuasive and get to the key points quickly and
    effectively.
  4. Your handout must be supported by at least two scholarly articles.
  5. You may use the readings other than the textbook for this course. Format your handout according to the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.

Note:
Be sure to submit both your written report and your handout for this
assignment. Both files should be uploaded in a single submission to the
assignment submission page.

The paper and preliminary deliverables must be well written and formatted in conformity with the CSU-Global Guide to Writing and APA Requirements.

Discussion: Trait Theory

Trait Theory suggests certain individuals have innate characteristics or traits that may assist in particular leadership situations. Researchers in the field have identified specific traits necessary for effective leadership. As a future leader in public health, it is important to know how particular traits may impact effective leadership.

For this Discussion, review the week’s Learning Resources to highlight the strengths and limitations of Trait Theory of leadership. Select an effective leader to use for this Discussion. Think about the traits of the leader you selected. Consider how useful Trait Theory is in assessing the leader’s effectiveness.

By Day 4

Write a brief description of the leader you selected and two of his or her essential leadership traits. Then, describe two strengths and two limitations of Trait Theory. Finally, explain the usefulness of Trait Theory in assessing the effectiveness of the leader you selected. (2 pages, APA format)

soc305 week 2 assignment

Final Paper Preparation

To prepare for your Final Paper (due in Week Five), complete the following assignment and submit it to your instructor for feedback. Your paper should include a problem statement, outline, and annotated bibliography.

Problem Statement: Describe the social problem selected for your paper.

Outline: Using the sample below as a guide, provide an outline for your Final Paper. Remember that papers are expected to define a significant problem faced by the justice system, describe the scope and consequences of the problem, and discuss society’s responses to the problem (including public policies and other less formal responses). Your paper should also present a clearly reasoned alternative, supported by scholarly research.

  1. Title
  2. Abstract
  3. What is the problem? Be sure to narrow your problem enough to allow a focused examination.
  4. What are the individual and social implications of this problem? Discussion of implications should be supported by accurate research data.
  5. What do the experts say about the problem?
  6. What have we, as a society, done about this problem? Consider public policies and other, less formal responses.
  7. How are public policies and other, less formal responses working?
  8. Describe an alternative solution to the problem.
  9. Discuss why the alternative is, or can be, an effective response to the problem. Remember to consider negative consequences of the alternative response.
  10. Conclude with your thoughts about your chosen social problem. This is a good place to include personal opinions, assuming you wish to share them in a research paper.
  11. References

In short, define a problem, discuss the response, and provide alternative responses to the problem. For example, your problem could be drug use/abuse, with a focus on prescription drug abuse among teenagers. Your description of the problems should be fact based, relying on expert opinion. Your alternative can be an adjustment of current policy or a new direction. For example, your may propose longer prison sentences, or legalization of all drugs. Be creative, although suggestions must be supported by scholarly research.

Annotated Bibliography: The purpose of creating a list of sources is to assist you in organizing and evaluating your research. The list should include the following information for each source (minimum of five):

  1. Name of the source, including the complete bibliographic citation in proper APA format.
  2. Summary of the source (at least one paragraph) including how this source will contribute to your paper.

The paper must be three to five pages in length and formatted according to APA style. You must use at least five scholarly resources (at least three of which can be found in the Ashford Online Library) other than the textbook to support your claims and subclaims. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page. For information regarding APA samples and tutorials, visit the Ashford Writing Center, within the Learning Resources tab on the left navigation toolbar.

Discussion Board 4/Individual Project 4

Part 1

You have been appointed to be a part of a special committee that is responsible for devising policy procedures and a budget for the organization’s earthquake preparedness. The last earthquake in 2003 exposed areas of weakness within the organization, regarding the need for emergency equipment and supplies. You and your committee will need to draft a proposal that will address what earthquake emergency equipment and supplies will be required, as well as a budget that will show how much the items and overall expenses will cost to maintain and replace expired items.

The budget needs to include how many staff members will be needed to operate the emergency preparedness department. You should begin your proposal by identifying the population size being served by your public administration organization and by identifying any other factors about the population being served that are relevant to your overall proposal. Examples of other factors could be matters related to geography, the needs of a particular subpopulation, or regional weather patterns.

Secondly, the committee will need to propose an earthquake policy to address the proper protocols if and when an earthquake should occur. The policy needs to stipulate what emergency procedures need to be followed. The policy should include the frequency of earthquake drills by all personnel and who is responsible for stocking the earthquake supplies and maintaining the emergency preparedness budget.

Finally, the committee needs to include a rationale in the proposal for what challenges the organization may face in implementing and maintaining the operations of the emergency earthquake preparedness.

Assignment Guidelines

  • Address the following in your proposal of 1,250 words:
    • The Budget
      • Must include a breakdown of the various emergency supplies to be used in the event of an earthquake
      • Needs to include how many staff members will be needed to operate the emergency preparedness department
      • You should begin your proposal by identifying the population size being served by your public administration organization.
      • Identify any other factors about the population being served that are relevant to your overall proposal
      • Other factors may include the following:
        • Matters related to geography
        • Needs of a particular subpopulation
        • Regional weather patterns
    • Earthquake Policy
      • This policy needs to stipulate what emergency procedures need to be followed.
      • This policy should include the following:
        • The frequency of earthquake drills by all personnel
        • Responsibilities for stocking the earthquake supplies
        • A plan for maintaining the emergency preparedness budget
    • Identifying Challenges
      • What challenges might the organization face in implementing and maintaining the operations of the emergency earthquake preparedness? Explain in detail.
  • Remember to support all of your arguments with scholarly resources.
  • Be sure to reference all sources using APA style. With 3 being required.

Part 2

Primary Task Response: Your first task is to post your own Key Assignment Outline to the discussion area so that other students are able to review your plan.

A detailed outline of the IP portion( Part 1) is needed.

Professional Advocacy through Association Membership

Professional Advocacy through Association Membership

Professional advocacy is about supporting the interests of
one’s profession. Professional associations advocate for their members by
uniting as a single voice and taking action to advance or remove barriers to
the profession. Nurse practitioners (NPs) unite in member-created associations
and organizations at many different levels: local, state, national, and
international. They unite as specialty groups to further the goals or interests
of their profession. Each of these organizations has a purpose or mission,
membership benefits, and role in professional advocacy. While individually the
NP may be able to contact a legislator on an issue of concern, a professional
organization has the collective power of being able to be heard in numbers.
These organizations are poised to take the course of action needed to influence
the stakeholders. Just as these groups take action to make change, individual
NPs must take action to promote their own professional interests and causes.
One of the best ways a professional can support their profession is by joining
an association or organization.

Directions

In a 3–5 page paper address the following:

  1. Join a
NP association at the local, state, national or international level. (join
    as a student)
  2. Discuss
the mission and vision of this organization.
  3. Describe
    the requirements for membership.
  4. Explain
at least five benefits to belonging to this organization.
  5. Demonstrate
understanding of the advocacy efforts of this organization by answering
    the following:
  • What
are the current key issues of concern (name at least three)?
  • What
actions are being taken by this organization to address these concerns?
  • What
current legislative efforts are being done by this organization in one of
    the following areas:

    • expanding
      the NP scope of practice
    • NP
      regulation of practice
    • Healthcare
      policy
    • Payment
      issues
    • Prescriptive
      privileges
  • Reflect
on how your membership to this organization can promote the NP profession.

Argumentation Essay

***Does not matter what that essay is an about you can pick that specifc topic, as long as it is 500 words or more*****

What is an argumentative essay?

The argumentative essay is a genre of writing that requires the student to investigate a topic; collect, generate, and evaluate evidence; and establish a position on the topic in a concise manner.

Please note: Some confusion may occur between the argumentative essay and the expository essay. These two genres are similar, but the argumentative essay differs from the expository essay in the amount of pre-writing (invention) and research involved. The argumentative essay is commonly assigned as a capstone or final project in first year writing or advanced composition courses and involves lengthy, detailed research. Expository essays involve less research and are shorter in length. Expository essays are often used for in-class writing exercises or tests, such as the GED or GRE.

Argumentative essay assignments generally call for extensive research of literature or previously published material. Argumentative assignments may also require empirical research where the student collects data through interviews, surveys, observations, or experiments. Detailed research allows the student to learn about the topic and to understand different points of view regarding the topic so that she/he may choose a position and support it with the evidence collected during research. Regardless of the amount or type of research involved, argumentative essays must establish a clear thesis and follow sound reasoning.

The structure of the argumentative essay is held together by the following.

  • A clear, concise, and defined thesis statement that occurs in the first paragraph of the essay.

In the first paragraph of an argument essay, students should set the context by reviewing the topic in a general way. Next the author should explain why the topic is important (exigence) or why readers should care about the issue. Lastly, students should present the thesis statement. It is essential that this thesis statement be appropriately narrowed to follow the guidelines set forth in the assignment. If the student does not master this portion of the essay, it will be quite difficult to compose an effective or persuasive essay.

  • Clear and logical transitions between the introduction, body, and conclusion.

Transitions are the mortar that holds the foundation of the essay together. Without logical progression of thought, the reader is unable to follow the essay’s argument, and the structure will collapse. Transitions should wrap up the idea from the previous section and introduce the idea that is to follow in the next section.

  • Body paragraphs that include evidential support.

Each paragraph should be limited to the discussion of one general idea. This will allow for clarity and direction throughout the essay. In addition, such conciseness creates an ease of readability for one’s audience. It is important to note that each paragraph in the body of the essay must have some logical connection to the thesis statement in the opening paragraph. Some paragraphs will directly support the thesis statement with evidence collected during research. It is also important to explain how and why the evidence supports the thesis (warrant).

However, argumentative essays should also consider and explain differing points of view regarding the topic. Depending on the length of the assignment, students should dedicate one or two paragraphs of an argumentative essay to discussing conflicting opinions on the topic. Rather than explaining how these differing opinions are wrong outright, students should note how opinions that do not align with their thesis might not be well informed or how they might be out of date.

  • Evidential support (whether factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal).

The argumentative essay requires well-researched, accurate, detailed, and current information to support the thesis statement and consider other points of view. Some factual, logical, statistical, or anecdotal evidence should support the thesis. However, students must consider multiple points of view when collecting evidence. As noted in the paragraph above, a successful and well-rounded argumentative essay will also discuss opinions not aligning with the thesis. It is unethical to exclude evidence that may not support the thesis. It is not the student’s job to point out how other positions are wrong outright, but rather to explain how other positions may not be well informed or up to date on the topic.

  • A conclusion that does not simply restate the thesis, but readdresses it in light of the evidence provided.

It is at this point of the essay that students may begin to struggle. This is the portion of the essay that will leave the most immediate impression on the mind of the reader. Therefore, it must be effective and logical. Do not introduce any new information into the conclusion; rather, synthesize the information presented in the body of the essay. Restate why the topic is important, review the main points, and review your thesis. You may also want to include a short discussion of more research that should be completed in light of your work.

A complete argument

Perhaps it is helpful to think of an essay in terms of a conversation or debate with a classmate. If I were to discuss the cause of World War II and its current effect on those who lived through the tumultuous time, there would be a beginning, middle, and end to the conversation. In fact, if I were to end the argument in the middle of my second point, questions would arise concerning the current effects on those who lived through the conflict. Therefore, the argumentative essay must be complete, and logically so, leaving no doubt as to its intent or argument.

The five-paragraph essay

A common method for writing an argumentative essay is the five-paragraph approach. This is, however, by no means the only formula for writing such essays. If it sounds straightforward, that is because it is; in fact, the method consists of (a) an introductory paragraph (b) three evidentiary body paragraphs that may include discussion of opposing views and (c) a conclusion.

Longer argumentative essays

Complex issues and detailed research call for complex and detailed essays. Argumentative essays discussing a number of research sources or empirical research will most certainly be longer than five paragraphs. Authors may have to discuss the context surrounding the topic, sources of information and their credibility, as well as a number of different opinions on the issue before concluding the essay. Many of these factors will be determined by the assignment.
