English 102: Persuasive Essay

Assignment Write a persuasive essay that aims to convince the reader to support a non-profit organization of your choice. Locate the non-profit organization’s website and gain background knowledge on their work. The website is the only outside source required for this essay. No other outside sources should be used to compose your essay. You must include one direct quote, paraphrase, and summary (each with an in-text citation) from the website. You will also include a Works Cited page. Utilize the readings and outline template to gain knowledge on the structure of argument.

Prewriting First, identify one social issue that is important to you and locate a reputable non-profit organization focused on the issue. For example, if you are interested in supporting the education of homeless youth, you may consider the organize A Child’s Place out of Charlotte, NC (http://www.achildsplace.org/). You most likely have many non-profit organizations in your area or a non-profit organization that you have supported for a long time.

Once you have chosen the issue and organization, visit their website. The organization’s website must include enough information so that you can understand their mission, importance of their work, and how to support their work.

Next, begin to construct your argument. As you write, remember that your mail goal is to convince the reader to support this organization, not to summarize their website. Avoid unnecessary summary. Creating an outline for this essay (see printable template in Blackboard) will help organize the body of your essay. Each main point in your outline should be original and should support your thesis statement. Each main point in your outline will become a body paragraph in your essay.

Introduction As always, the introduction should include necessary background information. For this essay, the background information should include the organization’s name and a brief summary of their history and mission. As the introduction narrows towards the thesis, remember that you are presenting only one argument: why the reader should support the non-profit organization you have chosen. Review the “Roadmap” section of chapter 11 and p. 383-387 for helpful tips on constructing a persuasive thesis.

Body Paragraphs Each body paragraph for this essay should introduce, explain, and support (i.e. present the argument for) one main point. Since you are only incorporating one source for this essay, each main point with support must come from you—this means you are utilizing your rhetorical skills

to persuade your audience, so incorporate plentiful detail (including examples) to develop each body paragraph.

Conclusion The concluding paragraph for this essay should:  Wrap up your argument by answering any unanswered questions  Reinforce the importance of supporting the non-profit organization you selected

Source Incorporating direct information from the website is important, as well. You must include at least one direct quote, one paraphrase, and one summary. Each of these must include an in-text citation. Remember that direct quotes, paraphrases, and summaries should always be concise and add to your essay. They are not a way to fill space, but a way to vary your method of incorporating support. Incorporating this single source add to your credibility as an author. Hi everyone,

Education is supposed to be intriguing and fun! When did academics become separate from what students should be able to do outside of the University learning environment? Why did academics make professionals become so focused on being compliant with strict academic policies that are not used in business and industry? Why would a student want and need Professors to tell them exactly what to do and think, rather than thinking through a challenge on their own? The game based environment and theme of this course puts authentic learning and creative thinking back into the course curriculum design, connecting student work with meaningful, reality-based work. In this course, we hope to instill passion and personalization into the learning process for students to realize and unleash their strategic leadership abilities.

If you think of this course like a game, and you realize that this course has different components and requirements than most other courses you have taken before or are taking during this term, you will realize the value of this experiential learning journey and will hopefully enjoy the complexities and challenges ahead.

This is a multi-dimensional course experience consisting of the following components:

You will need to show mastery for each Course Outcome (If you don’t know what the Course Outcomes are, visit the Syllabus asap) by engaging in each of these components of the course by using the knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors you have developed both academically and professionally up until now. It is essential that you understand how to navigate or apply yourself in each component area of the course. For instance, if you have trouble understanding how to read assignment instructions in relation to the assignment rubrics, it is essential that you seek help from your instructor. If you have difficulties with writing, it is essential that you seek help from the writing center. If you are struggling with the simulation, you must contact the Capsim Core helpline for assistance. If you struggle with conducting research, contact your instructor and/or the librarians for assistance. Collaborating with your fellow learners on the ungraded team discussion board and the graded discussion boards can help you with critical thinking. Of course, you may also collaborate your instructor for help with critical thinking and reasoning. If you struggle with desktop publishing skills, practice makes perfect! You can seek some assistance from the writing center with regard to the formatting of documents, PowerPoints, etc. However, it will be up to you to apply creativity skills and put in the effort.

You start the course by understanding what strategy actually is by completely immersing yourself as an actor within the simulation. You are not playing above or outside of the game… you are literally the game, and the simulation is your professional environment. It’s important to imagine the different players in your organization, so you can create important fictitious actors like managers and leaders that span your organization from the corporate level to the functional levels of management. You should consider creating a fairly expansive organizational structure. As you imagine the organizational structure, it’s important to imagine the other organizational design components along the way. Components of your strategy include what is referred to as the enterprise level of strategy.

This gaming experience is a form of Experiential Learning, which requires active learning and participation within a business environment. Your ability to reflect on your experiences, and use your experiences to develop the course deliverables, will apply “practice to theory.”

Connecting your research with your experiences is a critical part of your success in this course gaming experience. Your ability to behave, perform, execute, manage, and lead as a strategist will be judged by your instructor. Be as professional as possible.

Don’t forget… this is a game, and you are the main actor within the game, and your goal is to build the components of your organization (that you lead) using various aspects of strategic thinking, strategic design (modeling), and strategic decision-making. As the sole actor in this simulated learning experience, you will need to use your imagination and creativity to further construct your Capsim Core simulation company.

But you must not feel mislead. This purpose of this course gaming experience is to help you become a sound business strategist. As the leader of your Capsim Core simulation company, you will be in a position of power to make many strategic decisions and to be a strategic leader. You must play the role. When executing the deliverables in this course, you will be writing from your position of power as the leader of your organization. This kind of experience will put a lot of pressure on you to make vital decisions, but we know you’re ready to succeed. You’ve come this far in your degree program… you have learned how to talk the talk, now let’s see how well you walk the walk.

Success is a Journey. Success is very cumulative by design. This means that everything you do now, and every step you take will contribute towards your personal success in the future. Assignment 1 :Patents

Richard works at Murray Marine and is an avid diver. He comes to your office because he has an idea for a palm sized sonar device. The device provides a 3-D view of a wreck or cave dive site. What are the four basic requirements for patentability? What are the chances of Richard obtaining a patent for the device?

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

• Write between 750 – 1,250 words (approximately 3 – 5 pages) using Microsoft Word in APA style, see example below.
• Use font size 12 and 1” margins.
• Include cover page and reference page.
• At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.
• No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.
• Use at least three references from outside the course material; one reference must be from EBSCOhost. Text book, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the three reference requirement.
• Cite all reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) in the paper and list on a reference page in APA style.

Assignment 2 : Patent Infringement

Radek is a genetic scientist who works for a bio-engineering firm. Dr. Livingston comes to Radek with the feather of a Dodo bird encased in amber. Dr. Livingston wants to extract the DNA from the feather and patent it. Can Dr. Livingston and Radek patent the Dodo DNA?

Your company represents Sony. Sony is interested in acquiring a theme park chain in the United States so it can emulate the successes of The Walt Disney Company and Universal Pictures in owning theme parks where it can cross-promote films, artists, and related merchandise.

Your managing partner has asked you to research two possible options: Six Flags Entertainment Corporation, which trades as SIX on the New York Stock Exchange, and Sea World Parks and Entertainment, which trades as SEAS on the New York Stock Exchange. Perform research on each company.

Draft a memo to the managing partner in which you: (1) Make a recommendation as to which target, SIX or SEAS, would be the best target for Sony; (2) Discuss which option would be better for Sony to pursue – a merger or an acquisition – of the company you’ve chosen; and (3) outline the process that Sony would have to take to acquire a majority position in that company.

Task:

You are Loss Prevention Control officer of Civil Defence, Royal Oman Police, Oman. You are required to submit an inspection report to Muscat Municipality subjected on Prevention and Protection Requirements from Fire in Assemblies building* as per Building Fire Prevention and Protection requirements (BFPPR), Document no. 77/2002 by Directorate General of Civil Defense.

*Specification of the building:

The Assemblies building must be allocated occupancy for accommodating 50 persons or more for recreational, cultural, sports, presentation or the occupants have a common interest of gathering.

Note: You should not disclose the identity of the building within your report.

Guideline: You need to inspect the presence of various fire prevention and protection requirements physically referring to the Building Fire Prevention and Protection requirements (BFPPR), Document no. 77/2002 then identify them in your report with your suggestions. If you feel necessary, you may have conversation with security cum safety officer of the occupancy who maintains the Fire Safety system of the building. You are required to attach some pictures for each observation in the report (without revealing occupancy’s identity in photographs and text throughout the report). And the structure will be in form of:

– Origin and necessity of Fire Safety Laws in Oman.

– Observations (presence, condition, accessibility) of Fire Prevention and Protection systems in the occupancy (with evidence).
