Case Study: Maria

It is the beginning of the second semester, and Maria is having a great deal of difficulty in her algebra class. She has an understanding of the basic concepts of algebra, but has not mastered the skills needed to move to the higher-level concepts her class is now working on. Currently, her math performance level is two years below grade level and her reading performance level is one year below grade level. Maria’s teacher has spoken with her parents about the possible need for additional support, and her parents have agreed to help at home.

They have identified the following goals for Maria:

1. Simplify addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division equations (e.g., (2x + 6) (4x + 7) = 6x + 13).
2. Solve expressions with variables (e.g., 3x = -24).
3. Write and solve the algebra equation in a real-life word problem.
   

Part One: Strategies

Research instructional strategies applicable to meeting Maria’s needs established through her identified goals.

Instructional strategies should include:

• Explicitly teaching vocabulary
• Concrete-representational-abstract method
• Graphic organizers
• Mnemonic devices
• The use of assistive technology

In 250-500 words, summarize the recommended instructional strategies, rationalizing the appropriateness to Maria’s goals, appropriateness in motivating Maria to meet her goals, and specific tips for implementation.

Part Two: Unit Plan

Design a comprehensive unit plan based on the goals identified for Maria. Complete three lesson plans, using applicable sections of the COE Lesson Plan Template.

Your unit plan must include:

• Sequencing of academic goals and learning progressions.
• Instructional strategies identified in Part One.
• Appropriate augmentative and alternative communication systems and assistive technology.
• Integration of both formative and summative assessment.
• Integration of an appropriate ELA writing standard related to Maria’s third identified goal.

Part Three: Home Connection

In 250-300 words, summarize and explain how you plan to involve Maria’s parents in meeting her goals. Include a specific at-home activity to help in her continued success.

Considering your Cloud Ware Company, compare the November ending Profit and Loss Statement with the end of December Profit and Loss statement. This work should be done in Excel.

Compare the November Balance Sheet with the balance sheet as of December 31st. After analyzing the statements, answer the following questions:

• What is the financial situation of the company as of November 30?
• Did the financial situation improve, remain the same, or start to decline through the month of December?
• What areas of strength exist in the company? What are the company’s weaknesses?
• What are some areas where the company has opportunities for growth for the company’s financial situation?
• To help you justify the above answers, financial ratios should be calculated. At minimum, the following ratios should be calculated and used to support your arguments:
  • Debt to Equity Ratio (Total Liabilities/Equity) This ratio provides a look at how much the creditors have put into the company compared to how much the owners have put into the company.
  • Current Ratio (Current Assets/Current Liabilities) This provides a look at whether the business has enough current assets to pay their current liabilities.
  • Profit Margin (Net Income/Sales) This provides a measure of how much profit is earned on each dollar of sales.

You have decided to request a bank loan to expand your Cloud Ware business and the lender has asked for a one-year projection of revenue and expenses. To request the loan, you will need to create a Pro Forma one year budgeted income statement broken down over 12 months. You will need to look at the actual ending financial statements for October, November, and December and use this data to help create the forecast for the next fiscal year of business.

Using financial ratios will be critical in supporting your argument for the loan and be aware that most bankers or lenders will not even consider a loan prospect without addressing, for example, the impact of additional debt on your debt to equity ratio.

This report will accomplish 2 goals: The first is to discuss the duty to protect and its significance to chemical dependency counselors, and the second is to review the code of ethics of the American Counseling Association to determine the significance of the duty to protect to that organization.

Your supervisor has asked you to prepare a report on the duty to protect.

• Discuss the concept duty to protect as it relates to chemical dependency counselors.
• Refer to course materials in Phase 2 to obtain a copy of the code of ethics of the American Counseling Association (ACA) section A–H, and review the document to determine the ACA’s position on the duty to protect. The word protect is mentioned almost 20 times in the ACA Code of Ethics. Discuss the significance of the many references to the word protect.

The right of a parent to decide how to raise their children is considered a fundamental right, which means that government interference with that right must be for a compelling reason such as child abuse or neglect. In the case of Native American children, children were often removed from their tribal homes and placed in child welfare systems throughout the nation that were not culturally similar. In response to this, the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) was passed in 1978.

As the CPS investigator you have learned that Anne may possibly have Native American ancestry. This is your first case regarding a child from a Native American ancestry, so you will need to research the provisions of ICWA to ensure you are well informed. You are asked by your supervisor to write a 2-3 page paper outlining your knowledge of the following:

• the history of ICWA
• ICWA provisions
• ICWA requirements

Answer the following questions:

• As an investigator of alleged abuse/neglect, what does ICWA require you to do first?
• How would Anne’s lineage be determined?
• Can Anne be removed from her home and placed in foster care if she is of Native American descent?

Imagine the presentation has been approved by the president and will be publicly published to sell the president’s ideas.

Take your research from the three essays, and present it in a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint. Here’s a link to instructions on using PowerPoint if you’re new to it. (Open Office can also be used to create PowerPoint presentations, even if you don’t have Microsoft Office).

REQUIREMENTS

• At least nine slide. Title slides and reference slides aren’t part of the slide count.
• Each topic will have three slide minimum, one to illustrate the problem, one to illustrate the preferred solution, and one to illustrate the opposing solution.
• At least one use of animation or sound should be used within the final product.
