Assignment Choice #2: Exploring Negotiations

Write about a negotiations-related topic. The purpose of this project is to explore one of the topics that has been discussed in this course in more depth. This will allow you to apply the concepts learned in the course and also to demonstrate your understanding of key negotiation topics. For instance, you might decide to describe and analyze a particular real-life negotiation (Middle East peace negotiations or a major merger and acquisition negotiation, for example) or research any topic of particular interest to you, such as cross-cultural negotiation styles, the importance and impact of nonverbal communication, gender differences, or negotiation styles, for example. You will need to obtain approval of your project topic by the end of Week 4.

The final Portfolio Project should be 6-8 pages in length. This does not include the required cover page and reference page. A cover page, abstract, in-text citations, and a reference page are all required with your submission. In addition, you need to cite a minimum of five scholarly sources. Your paper must be formatted according to the APA Requirements. See the full grading criteria for the project in the Portfolio Project rubric found in the Module 8 folder.

Read the following scenarios and respond to the discussion post.

Albert thinks crime victims should be able to participate in all phases of a criminal prosecution, and should be able to direct the public prosecutor to drop the case or bring it to trial. He was a victim. The trial ended up being more difficult and embarrassing to him than to the perpetrator, who was a relative. He is angry that the prosecutor did not drop the case when he asked for it to be dismissed.

Betty disagrees. She thinks crime victims should testify as witnesses, and file a restitution affidavit at the end, but otherwise not direct the case. Betty was a victim in a case where she felt she would have been intimidated into dropping it if she had been able to do so. She truthfully stated, “It is not up to me. It is a public prosecution and I have no control over it.”

Argue both sides, in separate posts. Use and cite laws that are used for victim’s rights in your home state. Your state may have these rights in statutes, rules of court, or both. After you post on both sides, reply two or more times and see if you can arrive at a compromise solution.

Research articles and/or books on vocabulary instruction by experts such as Robert Marzano, Janet Allen, Anita Archer, Kylene Beers, and Laura Robb.

Based on your readings, design a plan, in approximately 1,250-1,500 words, outlining best practices for vocabulary instruction in your content area.

Things to consider in developing your plan include:

The number of words presented per week.

The process you will use for teaching new terms.

The frequency with which you will work with the terms.

The materials you will use in vocabulary instruction and review activities.

The activities you will use in reviewing and connecting terms.

The activities you will use to engage students with one another using vocabulary terms.

The activities you will use to encourage student self-reflection on their progress.

How you will monitor the accuracy of students’ work.

Support all of your ideas with citations from your readings. Use the GCU Library for additional peer-reviewed articles that can be used in support of your content. Cite a minimum of five academic sources.

While APA format is not required for this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

Case Study 4: Joran van der Sloot

Due Week 8 and worth 160 points

According to the text, heterosexual norms represent the guidelines for determining sexual deviance. In two different cases Joran van der Sloot’s heterosexual deviance has left him as a criminal suspect in one case involving Natalee Holloway, and as a convicted murder in another case involving another woman, Stephany Flores. In this case study, you will explore heterosexual deviance as committed by Joran van der Sloot.

Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:

1. Specify the key turning points when van der Sloot began his descent into deviant behavior. Next, determine whether or not you believe “sexual deviant” is an accurate label for van der Sloot. Support your position.
2. Debate whether or not the privilege of van der Sloot’s birth allowed a murderer to walk among everyday citizens. Justify your response.
3. Analyze the significance of two (2) characteristics of sexual deviance that are applicable to van der Sloot. Next, based on the characteristics you deemed applicable to van der Sloot, speculate whether or not there was a point that medical intervention could have helped van der Sloot overcome or better control his sexual deviance. Provide a rationale to support your response.
4. Suggest two (2) rationales for society’s changing attitudes towards what is deemed acceptable sexual behavior. Next, predict two (2) possible outcomes of the changing attitudes towards sexual behavior and its resulting influence on crime in the United States. Justify your response.
5. Use at least three (3) quality academic resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar type Websites do not qualify as academic resources.
