Introduction to Decision Making

Assignment Overview

Like many airlines around the world, leading Australian airline Qantas is facing very difficult times in spite of having a 65% market share in its home market of Australia. Due to rising fuel costs and a slow world economy, Qantas has recently been losing money and their CEO Alan Joyce has some tough choices to make.

One difficult decision for Joyce is whether or not to sell Qantas’ frequent flyer program. It may seem odd for an airline to sell its frequent flyer program, but Qantas’ program is much more than just an airline reward program. Members of this program can gain points not only by flying on Qantas but also through other means such as shopping at one of Qantas’ corporate partners or using one of their credit cards. Points can be redeemed not only with free flights, but also with products from numerous retailers. Over 10 million Australians belong to this rewards program, almost half of the population.

The frequent flyer program is Qantas’ most valuable asset and a sale of this program would help Qantas get out of its current financial troubles. However, selling the program would also mean allowing another company to have access to Qantas most loyal customers including their business class and first class customers. In the long-run, there is potential the sale could backfire and would not be wise.

Do some research on CEO Joyce’s current choice of whether or not to sell their frequent flyer program, and also thoroughly review the background materials on intuitive versus rational decision-making including Moshal (2009) and Kourdi (2011). Your assignment will be to apply the background materials concepts to Joyce’s current big decision.

Some specific articles on Qantas to get you started:

Ross, K. (2014, Aug 27). Qantas CEO faces tough choices. Wall Street Journal [Proquest]

Ironside, R. (2014, Aug 15). Qantas warned to ground plans to sell frequent flyer program. The Gold Coast Bulletin [Proquest]

Gilder, P. (2014, Mar 29). Loyalty future cloudy. The Gold Coast Bulletin [Proquest]

Australia: Qantas frequent flyer hits 10 million member mark. (2014). MENA Report [Proquest]

Case Assignment

Once you have finished reading about Qantas and reviewing the background materials including Moshal (2009) and Kourdi (2003), write a 4- to 5-page paper addressing the following questions:

  1. Is the decision whether or not to sell Qantas’ frequent flyer program a strategic or operational decision? Is it a programmed or non-programmed decision? Explain your answer using references to Moshal (2009) or Kourdi (2003).
  2. Suppose Alan Joyce decides to take a rational approach to the decision whether or not to sell the frequent flyer program. List a step-by-step approach you would recommend, and include specifics regarding what kind of information or choices should be considered at each step. Do not just list the steps, give detail at each step and use material both from your research on Qantas and from Moshal (2009) or Kourdi (2003) to come up with these steps.
  3. Joyce has been the CEO of Qantas for six years and is an experienced airline executive. Given his experience, do you recommend Joyce use a rational or intuitive approach to this decision? If there is a new CEO who comes from another industry and does not have this airline experience, would you recommend they use a rational or intuitive approach? Explain your reasoning, and make references to Moshal (2009) or Kourdi (2003) as appropriate.

Assignment Expectations

  • Follow the assignment instructions closely and follow all steps listed in the instructions
  • Stay focused on the precise assignment questions, don’t go off on tangents or devote a lot of space to summarizing general background materials
  • Make sure to cite readings from the background materials page. Rely primarily on the required background readings as your sources of information

Include both a bibliography and in-text citations. See the Student Guide to Writing a High-Quality Academic Paper, including pages 13 and 14 on in-text citations.

About Your Signature Assignment

This signature assignment is designed to align with specific program student learning outcome(s) in your program. Program Student Learning Outcomes are broad statements that describe what students should know and be able to do upon completion of their degree. The signature assignments may be graded with an automated rubric that allows the University to collect data that can be aggregated across a location or college/school and used for program improvements.

Purpose of Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to allow the student an opportunity to apply their understanding of cash flow management, break-even analysis, and short-term and long-term financing in starting and growing a business.

Assignment Steps

Resources: OECD Database, Corporate Finance

Prepare a 12- to 15-slide PowerPoint® presentation with speaker notes requesting initial funding of $500,000 to start and run a start-up company. The proposed start-up company could be an existing business model (coffee shop, pet store, etc.) or could be something entirely new and exciting.

Create the presentation in the following format, with at least one slide to cover each of the following areas:

  • Title Page
  • Table of Contents
  • Executive Summary
  • Information about the Industry
  • Marketing Plan
  • Competitor Analysis
  • 3 Year Income Statement (Profit & Loss) Projections
  • Include your assumptions for why and how you will achieve your sales growth and what significant expenses and investments you expect to incur to achieve your revenue goals.
  • 3 Year Proposed Funding Schedule (Sources and uses of the funds received.)
  • Break-Even Analysis
  • Academic and Business References

Review the following scenarios and assumption, and explain how it impacts your decision to expand:

  • After Year 3, the investors are interested in your company expanding internationally to possibly outsource labor or to reduce manufacturing costs. What countries would you expand to first, and why? What factors would you need to consider in making this decision?
  • What is the corporate tax rate in the countries you are considering expanding your business to, and how will that affect your decision to expand globally? (Use OECD Database or another resource to determine the corporate tax rate).
  • The investors want to see a decision tree detailing the decisions you would make if you received $300K now and $200K at the end of three years instead of $500K up front.
  • The investors would like your team to provide advantages and disadvantages of using debt financing versus selling company stock to raise capital for growth.
  • Briefly explain the venture capital process. Does it make sense for your company to raise funds through venture capital?

Assignment 4 Dell presentation for the Board of Directors

In this assignment, you are to use the same corporation you selected and focused on for Assignments 1, 2, and 3.

Consider the corporation you have selected to use in your first three assignments.Identify one of the firm’s major competitors that you would consider working for.

The annual report will often provide insights that can help address some of these questions.

Develop an executive level Power Point presentation with 8 -12 slides with speaker notes and appropriate graphics or professional video.

You will do a 15 minutes presentation to the Board of Directors of the corporation. Based upon Assignments 1 through 4 – develop an eight to twelve slide PowerPoint presentation with speaker notes or record a video. Each slide should include your research/citations as noted below.

Social Theory Paper

1250 Words!!!

Social Theory through Television Paper Instructions

Overview:

In class, we discuss two classical sociological theoretical concepts: Marx’s alienation and Weber’s iron

cage. Concepts like these capture the complex social conditions which we as sociologists (and as

members of society) are tasked to ‘figure out.’ These words are more than academic gobbledygook –

they are tools for tracing the historical social processes that have come to define modern society—

processes that are all around us and have implications for how our lives unfold.

This assignment offers an opportunity to practice your research skills and develop theoretical insight by

applying these famous classical concepts. You’ll need to find at least two (properly cited) external (not

used in-class) academic sources that inform your understanding of the two sociological concepts that

you choose. You’ll also need to watch some television to complete the assignment.

Your main task is to demonstrate your understanding of alienation and the iron cage by exploring how

they can be used to understand the experiences, personalities, circumstances of and decisions made a

central character in one of the following television shows:

 Boardwalk Empire (HBO)

 Breaking Bad (AMC)

 Damages (KZK)

 Dexter (Showtime)

 House of Cards (Netflix)

 Mad Men(AMC)

 Orange Is the New Black (Netflix)

 Sons of Anarchy (FX)

 The Sopranos (HBO)

 The Walking Dead (AMC)

 Weeds (Showtime)

Theory allows us to see facets of society only visible in the abstract. Knowing that we live in a

bureaucratic, scientific, capitalist, stratified, globalized social order, we can expect that people are to

some extent shaped by the social forces that characterise this order. In your Social Theory Through

Television paper, draw on Marx and Weber as you guide me through your interpretation of how society

has constrained and impacted the fictitious lives of those we find so interesting that we spend hours

living vicariously through them. Requirements:

In an analytical essay of no longer than 1250 words:

a) Briefly describe your selected television show. In some detail, describe the life of the character that

you plan to focus your analysis on.

b) With reference to the external sociological literature, briefly define alienation and the iron cage as

conceptualized by Marx and Weber.

c) Pick specific examples from your chosen television show that apply these concepts (serve as a means

of illustrating the concepts). You can refer to the entire series, a single season, a single episode, or even

focus on a single scene: there is lots of flexibility here.

d) Compare and contrast the concepts as potential lenses through which we can understand how your

chosen character (just as people in the real world are) can be said to experience these sociological

concepts. Do both concepts help make sense of why the character acts as she or he does? Is one more

applicable than the other? Are both inadequate? Why do you think so?

Grading Rubric:

 Submission and Style/Formatting Guidelines were followed ( /2.5 marks)

 Maximum word count allocation was respected ( /2.5 marks)

 Assignment is clearly and eloquently written ( /5 marks)

 Introduction summarizes the intention of your work ( /5 marks)

 The body of your paper systematically addresses all assignment requirements ( /10 marks)

 Theoretical concepts are applied with precision using illustrations from your selected television show (

/20 marks)

 Assignment includes an accurate reading and citation of selected external academic sources ( /5

marks)
