Persuasive Speech

For your third assignment, you’ll put all of these skills to good use by
preparing and delivering a researched, persuasive speech.
Persuasive speaking is challenging, because the goal is to create, reinforce, or change people’s
beliefs or actions.

Your success will depend on your ability to adapt your speech to the audience
and to support your message with credible resources.

Visual Aid: This assignment also requires the use of a visual aid.

A PowerPoint template is
provided for you to complete and use during your speech delivery.

NOTE: You may choose to
create your own PowerPoint and not use the provided template.
Instructions:

Follow the steps below to outline, record, and upload a 7-8 minute researched,
persuasive speech.

You will complete your outline and submit it directly in Blackboard.

For your
speech, You may want to print this assignment and check off each step as you complete it.
You should use at least two quality resources (as defined by your instructor).

Step 1: Complete SmartBook Chapters and Watch Videos
 Ensure you have completed SmartBook Chapters for all previous weeks. This
information will help you successfully complete Assignment 3.
 Chapter 16: Speaking to Persuade. This chapter provides information on the three types
of persuasive speeches and how to organize them.
 Chapter 17: Methods of Persuasion. This chapter provides strategies for building
credibility, using evidence and reasoning, and appealing to emotions.
 Videos: Watch the videos assigned by your instructor this week. These videos provide
examples of persuasive speeches that follow the guidelines presented in the SmartBook.

Step 2: Select a Topic (due Week 6)
 Select a type of persuasive speech from one of the three types listed below. Choose
your own topic that is different from the examples provided.
 Go to the Blackboard Week 6 Assignment 3: Topic Selection section and submit your
topic.

 Create an outline in Microsoft Word. You may choose to use the template in Blackboard
Week 7 to help you organize the introduction, body, and conclusion of your speech.

 Develop a specific purpose, central idea, and several main points so you’ll stay within
the 8-minute time limit.

 Create a PowerPoint slideshow visual aid. You may use the template provided in
Blackboard Week 7, or you may create your own. Minimum 5 slides, maximum 10 slides
(including title and reference slides).

 Go to the Blackboard Week 7 Assignment 3: Outline section and upload your outline
and visual aid.

Step 4: Deliver, Record, and Upload Your Speech (due Week 8)

 Refer to your outline to deliver your speech. Do not read your notes word for word. Make
sure you record your speech delivery with a computer, phone, or tablet.
o Extra credit opportunity! Deliver your speech in front of at least one person
who appears on camera as the audience for the duration of the speech.

 Watch your recording. Do you want to submit it, or do you want to record another
version?

Step 5: Complete a Self Review (due Week 8)

This Critical Thinking Assignment focuses on how a firm can leverage one type of advancement in production technology to achieve a competitive advantage. Conduct research and assess one type of improvement in production technology that has advanced the product-based firm you have selected.

In your essay:

• Describe how this production technology achieves a competitive advantage.
• Appraise why this firm had to adopt the technology.
• Describe when this technology became a used production method.
• Compare the advantages and disadvantages among firms that use or do not use this technology
• Explain the benefits of this technology
• Predict the impact if this technology had not been adopted.

Instructions:

• Your essay must have an organizational structure that includes a strong title, followed by an introductory paragraph that generates interest and includes a thesis and mapping of what is to come. Each of the following sections, including a conclusion section, should use appropriate APA headings. Make sure that the body sections address each of the previous bullets.
• Write a 3-4-page paper, not including the required title and reference pages.
• You must support your analysis with at least two current scholarly references and the course textbook. Sources such as Wikipedia, USA Today, Fox News, or MSNBC News will not be accepted.
• Your paper must be properly cited and formatted according to APA Guidelines.
• Review the similarity results from Turnitin and correct all issues within the body of the essay. Paraphrasing is encouraged, but always cite your sources.

Remember, a product-based business sells a physical, tangible product, while a service-based business sells a service, which has no physical or tangible product.

Write a 4–5 page paper in which you analyze a personal learning experience based on theories of learning and cognition and formulate strategies to improve a learning situation in a provided scenario.

Introduction

Think about examples of how your own behavior can change due to conditioning effects—how rewards and punishments have shaped your own behavior over the years. What role have rewards and punishments played in your life? For example, how did your parents encourage you to learn multiplication tables or drive a car? Even job incentives can be framed in terms of rewards and punishments to improve employee performance.

In preparation for this assessment, research behaviorism and some of the classic studies conducted by John Watson and B. F. Skinner. It is important to understand the basic principles of behaviorism and how behaviorism fits into psychology research today. Find a peer-reviewed research study published within the last 8 years that addresses the theory or treatment of phobias.

Directions

For this assessment, address the following:

1. Conditioning treatment of phobias. Find a peer-reviewed research study published within the last 8 years that addresses the theory or treatment of phobias. Summarize the methods used and the conclusions made, and describe the key aspects of the research that reflect behaviorist principles.
2. Conditioning related to personal behavior. Describe how conditioning explains changes in your own behavior that you have observed, either at work or at home. Provide three examples. (If your examples are from personal experience, your descriptions may be in first person.) Be sure to relate theory and research to your examples. For example, you might describe how behavioral theory would explain your learning process in that situation. Cite scholarly articles to support your conclusions.
3. Relevance of conditioning today. Analyze how behaviorism is still relevant today. What are the limits of behaviorism? Are there processes that it does not explain well? For example, behaviorists believed that babies and children learned language through rewards and punishments, but today we know that language learning is a much more complex process. The behaviorist approach was not sufficient to explain the totality of language learning.

Strive to be as concise as possible and limit the length of your completed assessment to 5–6 pages of content, in addition to a title page and a references page. Support your statements and analyses with references and citations from at least three resources.
