For this first Case Assignment, your task is to apply some of the leadership development tools that you read about in the background materials to your own personal development. As a warning, this assignment as well as several other assignments will involve taking a lot of surveys. Of course surveys are not the only tools used in leadership development, but they are one of the most popular tools and many leadership coaching companies charge a lot of money for the surveys that they’ve developed. Fortunately some of the surveys discussed in the background readings are available for free. The purpose of taking the quizzes are both for use in your leadership development, and also to get a taste of what various leadership coaches out there are doing and charging their clients for.

Make sure to thoroughly review the background readings before writing your paper. The main tasks in this assignment are A) read the background materials, B) take some self-assessment quizzes, and C) write up a self-development plan based on what you’ve read about in this module and your score on the quizzes. This report assignment requires you to write a short recommendation report on a real topic of your choice. This will be an Analytical Report to solve a problem. You will include a recommendation for action in this report.

Your short report will use a business letter format and must contain at least one visual, which must be integrated effectively. The report will be at least 750 words, not including citation page.

Your topic may come from your work, community, college experience, or any other area of your life where you can identify a problematic or unsatisfactory situation. Preferably, pick a topic that you’re really interested in, that has something to do with your career field, and/or that you feel strongly about. Let me know if you need help deciding a topic.

You will need to cite at least two credible sources on your topic, either in APA or MLA style.

Audience

You will write your report to a real decision maker, an executive reader who has the means to act on your recommendations. As you prepare your report, you should do so with this reader in mind. In other words, write the report as if that person will be the reader. You aren’t required to submit the report to that reader, just to me. On a Thursday in April 2018, two black men were arrested at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. Two black men were waiting to meet a business partner, but while they were waiting, they bought nothing. When the store manager asked them to leave, they refused, explaining that they had come to see someone. The store’s manager called police, who arrested two black men after they refused to leave. Meanwhile, another starbucks customer used her phone to record the arrest, which quickly went viral. In an interview after her arrest, the woman who filmed the video said she had been sitting there for some time and had not been asked to leave, although she had not ordered anything. In addition, according to the video, the two black men’s business partners appeared during the arrest and asked the manager and the police what the men had done wrong. The public and those who witnessed the arrests considered it discriminatory and racist. The incident occurred on a Thursday and the following Monday, and Johnson said the manager was no longer working at the store. The arrests sparked protests and a sit-in at a Philadelphia starbucks days after the incident.
