Part One

First, watch the 9 short video clips entitled The Legislative Process, located here https://www.congress.gov/legislative-process. Take notes on any information you did not already know. (**Read the transcript if the video does not load)

Next, go to the US House of Representatives Home Page at http://thomas.loc.gov OR the US Senate Home Page at www.senate.gov. Select one of the standing committees, special/select committees, or subcommittees and click on the link.

  • Click on Committees on the top menu bar
  • Select any one of the committees listed in either the House or Senate.
  • Click on the
    website of the committee you chose. (each committee should have a
    website that you can go to, if not please choose one that does)
  • Once you are on
    the website click on either the “subcommittee” or “full committee” tab
    which will list all of the committee’s members.
  • Then fill in the following in complete sentences.

1. Committee Name – what is the name of the committee you’ve chosen?

2. Who is the CHAIR of the committee? Briefly describe why you think this person was selected as the chairperson.

Click on some of the links in “News” and “Key Issues”
on your chosen committee’s website. These may be under headings worded
differently, like newsroom, updates, etc. Identify and explain the
variety of issues the committee examines. Choose at least two issues and

together.

 What is the structure and organization of the PR department?

  • I work for a non-profit that is organized in a few different departments. Business Development, Marketing, Product Team, and Campaigns. As the PR team, it’s our job to work cross-functionally to have an understanding of all the departments in the team. PR falls under the marketing team, and we primarily serve the business development team. What business development sells to sponsors, it’s our job to bring to life and create buzzy launches and opportunities for partnerships.

 What is the skill that a good PR person must have

  • Flexibility! This job changes every day, and you have to be flexible. You should be able to adapt to wide range of situations quickly, have an understanding of what media is covering and not just one channel, you should understand TV, Print, and online media. You should always have input on how to make press interested in your clients or projects.

 Your PR goals and objectives

  • Working “in-house” versus in an agency, my goals are aligned with the goals of the overall marketing strategy for the organization. My goals are normally set around building awareness for the overall organization. My goal is to brand our organization and our team members as experts in the social change space.

 Main publics

  • I have two publics, Old people (press, partners, donors, the board of directors), young people( our 6M member’s ages 13-25).

 Primary communication tools

  • I primarily contact media via email. I also use services like Cision and PRNewswire that allow me to message a large number of people at once. I also believe it’s important to call people to follow-up.

 What type of computer Main and/or current programs that are used?

  • I mostly use Cision which allows me to find contacts, blast press releases, monitor multiple news sites, and track all pick-up.

 What’s required to enter the industry

  • It truly varies, but most people have some understanding of marketing and communications.

 How hard is it to move your way up in the industry

  • It depends on you and your dedication to the career, as well as the opportunities you get. Most people who start off at an Agency, have faster growth trajectories.

 What are the advantages of an in-house public relations

department?

  • The advantage of an in-house PR department is that you have someone who understands your organization much more intimately. The person is usually an expert in everything that goes on inside of your business, and an expert in getting your story told, and to the right places for your brand.

 In what direction do you see the public relations industry heading?

  • DIGITAL! All things are leaning towards social media. We’ve lost a large number of print publications, which are being replaced with online content. Many PR roles are now also focusing on influencer relations, people value the power of influencers over press mentions at times.

In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court declared laws that require judges to
impose life-without-parole sentences for juveniles to be in violation of
the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition of “cruel and unusual punishments.”
The decision (Miller v. Alabama) was a 5-4 split in the Court – which is typical of many such decisions that apply the cruel and unusual punishment provision.

Your initial post must analyze the retributive justice issues of
mandatory, life-without-parole sentences. Consider the facts of Miller v. Alabama:
Defendant Miller, a 14-year old boy, with an accomplice beat the victim
with a baseball bat and set his trailer on fire with the victim inside.
Defendant Miller was tried as an adult for capital murder while
committing arson.

Is a mandatory, life-without-parole sentence just in such
circumstances? Remember that “just” may or may not be the same as
“constitutional.” Summarize both the pros and the cons of your answer to
this question, and critically evaluate these pros and cons, applying
principles of retributive justice discussed in the text. Your evaluation
must respond to the pros and cons, giving persuasive reasons why you
agree with some and disagree with some.

Your initial post should be at least 300 words in length. Support
your claims with examples from at least two of the required resources
for this discussion, and properly cite any references. Respond to at
least two of your classmates’ posts by Day 7 whose viewpoints are
