The goal of this course is to explore pre-modern encounters between people of different civilizations and cultural regions. Early in the term I asked you to select one of the 7 themes this course for your preferred area of focus. In the final project you will select a topic from within that theme and apply the techniques that historians use in analysis.

These are the two different approaches that we will use. Choose one.

Studying a subject by how it changes over time: Trace a limited topic through history (up to 1500 CE) Compare its change over at least three different points in time.

Studying a subject in the same time period but across several different locations and cultures: Analyze the impact and interaction between two –three societies.

Regardless of which approach you use, your final paper should include a discussion of the impact this topic has had in shaping our world today.

TIMELINE FOR FINAL THEME PROJECT

NOW: Select theme. Throughout the remaining weeks you can use this to guide your selection of modular learning topics to align with your chosen area. You might want to expand on one of these topics for your project. It will be helpful to keep note of speculations and questions that pop-up during the readings. They could lead to potential topics.

DETERMINE YOUR TOPIC. You will need to decide upon a World History topic from within your chosen theme and then narrow it down to either approach #1 or #2. From this you will write a research statement explaining your position for your written paper.

WRITE A THESIS STATEMENT that makes a statement about global history. Your statement should

2.Articulate which of the two approaches you will pursue.

3.Be approved by your instructor

WRITE YOUR THEME PAPER

1.Your final theme paper should be approximately 3-5 pages long.

2.Include a source page as the final page

3.It should contain at least 5 sources. At least one of them should be a primary source. Images and maps are acceptable sources with appropriate citations.

Writing Assignment 2

Students will write an essay, 500-750 words in length, on a topic selected from the list below. The purpose of the project is to give students an opportunity to discuss a key political science concept, and to show a basic understanding of academic research and reporting skills. The project consists of producing a 500-750 work essay on one of the provided topics (see below), as well as a works cited page for sources containing information used in the essay. The assignment is to be formatted according to the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. Students should research this style in order to properly format the assignment; papers not formatted properly will not receive a passing grade.

Students should use Courier or New Courier 12 point as the paper’s font, double space the text, and create one inch margins on all four sides of the page. In addition, the assignment should be formatted according to MLA style for papers with no title page.

1. In Chapter 5, “Voting, Campaigns, and Elections,” the authors provide an in-depth discussion of voter turnout. Complete the following:
   • Explain how voter turnout is measured.
   • Compare voter turnout in the U.S. with that in other countries.
   • Describe the factors that affect the level of voter turnout in the United States.
   • Compare voter turnout in Texas to that in the United States as a whole.
   • Identify the historic and contemporary factors which have led to a culture of low voter turnout in Texas.
   • How do you think voter turnout could be increased in Texas?
2. Describe the use of campaign contributions by lobbies and explain the extent to which lobbying is regulated in Texas.
   • Identify the organization responsible for overseeing lobbying in Texas.
   • Compare regulation of campaign finance at the national and state level (in Texas).
   • What appears to be difference in approach between the two?
   • Which method do you believe is better for purposes of maintaining the integrity of the election process?
3. Describe the characteristics and functions of American political parties.
   • Explain the relationship between the national political parties and the state political parties.
   • Review the Texas Democratic Party platform and the Texas Republican Party platform and explain the differences.
   • Compare each state party platform to its national party platform counterpart and explain the differences between the national and state party platforms.
   • Why do you believe differences would exist between the national and state party platforms?

The purpose of this assignment is for you to evaluate frequency/loyalty programs as a viable promotional tool within an advertising program. Since almost all hotels use loyalty programs (frequency programs) as a form of alternative marketing, this assignment focuses on the hotel industry. From the list below, choose at least five hotels to evaluate; assess the hotels’ loyalty programs based upon the overall value to the customer:

Use the following criteria to comparatively evaluate each loyalty program:

• Explain the investment that is necessary to earn rewards. For instance, consumers may need to invest money, time, or other resources.
• Describe the system of rewarding points or awards.
• Explain the redemption policies.
• Describe any additional requirements with respect to the redemption of awards.

Present your evaluation of the loyalty programs by creating a PowerPoint presentation with at least 10 slides (not including the title and references slides). Critique each loyalty program, and decide which ones are the best. Then, explain why they are the best. Make sure to cite the websites you analyzed, your textbook, and at least one additional source by using correct APA format. Use the “Notes” feature to elaborate on the contents of each slide.
