Humanities is the study of the human experience through the examination of culture, history, literature, religion, philosophy, physical education, culinary arts, language, and fine arts. A culture expresses some of its most important values, concerns, and world views through its creative and imaginative works. Throughout the humanities course, students have examined both academic and creative works and discussed the many perspectives and values that these works embody.

The signature assignment requires students to reflect on the importance of human expression in the development of cultures and, specifically, cultural understandings of the human condition. Observation #3: MIDDLE CHILDHOOD

The focus of this observation is children ages (6 – 11) – grades kindergarten through grade 5 or 6). Due to the pandemic, creativity may enable an excellent experience. A 30 minute observation in an elementary school setting (should one be possible), a virtual elementary school experience, an After School-age Child Care program, a community class, etc.. The environments of Middle Childhood are varied, and students should consider ages of interest. The years kindergarten through grades 1 – 3 are often referred to as early elementary school; and grades 4 – 5 or 6 – upper elementary school.

I have provided below some videos of kids from ages 6-11

RUNNING RECORD

The Running Record keeps track of everything that happens in a specified time period” (Essa, 2007). “Its purpose lies in the fact that a well written Running Record lets someone else read the description later and visualize the scene or events as it is recorded” (Carter, 2009).

When students of child development are given the opportunity to observe children in person, they become able to contrast data learned through readings and media presentations with the actual experience of seeing behaviors and hearing interactions. It is the very best way to develop an understanding of the developmental stages of children.
When performing an observation, it is recommended that 1/2 of the allotted time be used to observe several children of similar age interacting in the environment. This can be followed by a second time frame where “1”child is selected to be observed.

When taking notes for a running record, an observer’s attention is focused only on several children of similar age; or on one child. It might be necessary to reposition oneself in order to see and hear everything. Record in sequence all activity observed, as well as quotations of speech heard. It is recommended that students recall the importance of gathering data on each of the developmental domains: Physical Development, Cognitive Development, and Social and Emotional Development. To complete each observation requirement, an essay follows the Running Record, and is composed of a paragraph on each developmental domain. It is requested that only objective statementsbe used. In future child development courses, students may be required to interpret behaviors, and this might lend itself to subjective statements. An objective statement contains only what was seen and heard.

OBSERVATION FORMAT

INTRODUCTION: This paragraph describes the observation site. It must include the date, address, and time of visit. Descriptive data on the children in attendance, as well as the inside and outside of the sitemust be included.

DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE DETAIL: An important part of the Observation follow-up is the Running Record (see previous screen). To prepare for writing this, review the Observation assignment. It is positive to include time segments, and then the actions seen and the vocalizations heard. The rationale behind this assignment is for students to become familiar with age related characteristics of children at different stages of their development! In the Running Record, be careful to write ONLY what you see and hear. There are to be no interpretations of behaviors/actions!

DEVELOPMENTAL DOMAINS: Create 3 paragraphs in this portion of your paper. There is one paragraph for Physical Development; another paragraph for Cognitive Development; and the third paragraph for Social and Emotional Development. Within each paragraph, the characteristics that you observed and described in the Running Record are contained in the appropriate domain.

CONCLUSION: This paragraph is an evaluation of the Observation. It must include the ways in which the experience contributed to a better understanding of children in a stage of growth and development. An evaluation of your personal experience is an important addition to the value of this paper.

Research Paper Chapter 26 “The Politics of Gender”

I am choosing to do my research paper in Chapter 28, Section 6 “The Politics of Gender” The section was interesting to me because women were able to control family planning with birth control and female employment, including married women, were on a rise. The other section is 7 “The Expanding Civil Rights Movement, 1953-1963” This section touched on how segregation violated the equal protection clause of the 14Th Amendment.

Thesis Statement updated: While The Civil Rights movement allowed the women’s movement both believed they fought against dismantling of oppressive forces, Civil rights focused on the oppression of African Americans while the women’s movement worked to change gender roles.

You already completed the Final paper, but I need that information put in a 3 page including annotated bibliography of sources.  I have attached the paper you completed.

Final Paper Preparation

This assignment will prepare you for the Final Paper by initiating the research process and will help you map out the specific events and developments you will explore in depth in your paper. Review the instructions for the Final Paper laid out in Week Five of the online course or the Components of Course Evaluation section of the Course Guide before beginning this project. For your Final Paper, you must discuss at least six specific events or developments related to your chosen topic.

For this assignment, you will choose your topic and the six (or more) related events and developments that span the years 1865 to the present. You will then work on the research for your essay, and develop a draft of your introduction with a thesis statement. For your research, you must compile at least eight scholarly sources; choose at least six of your scholarly secondary sources from the Ashford University Library and include at least two primary sources. Primary sources are documents or artifacts that were created at the time of a historical event or by someone who personally experienced a historical event. Primary sources can be newspaper or magazine articles, books, letters, speeches, photographs, oral histories, paintings, or any other record of a historical event. The best place to find scholarly sources is the Ashford University Library’s research databases and eBook collection.

In a paragraph or two at the beginning of the paper, identify the events and developments you will discuss in your Final Paper, explain why you believe they are significant, and state your thesis. Your thesis should be a one or two sentence summary of the main conclusions that you drew while researching your topic and that you will support in your paper by constructing a logical argument based on evidence (sources).

You will then create a summary of sources by completing an annotated bibliography. To create an annotated bibliography, list each source in full APA reference format. Then, beneath each source write a one or two paragraph explanation of the important information in the source and how you plan to use it in your paper. The annotations must be in your own words. It is not acceptable to copy and paste the abstract or any other text. You must have annotations for all eight sources.

Please notice that you have been provided with many wonderful primary and secondary sources in the required reading and recommended reading sections for each week. Feel free to use these sources when constructing your assignment. Please visit the Academic Research section on your Course Home page (accessible through the Student Responsibilities and Policies tab on the left navigation toolbar) to review what types of materials are not acceptable for academic, university level research.

This assignment must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • The paper must be three pages in length (excluding title and reference pages) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.
  • You must use at least eight scholarly resources other than the textbook to support your claims.
  • Two of these sources should be primary sources; the remaining six sources should be scholarly secondary sources from the Ashford University Library.
  • You must provide a draft of your introduction with a concise thesis statement.
  • You must provide a one paragraph annotation for each source.
  • You must cite your sources within the text of your paper.

Differences in Training and Development
posted by Greg Brainard, MBA, MM/HRM

Class,

I would like to ask the class what you think the differences between employee development and training are, if any? I heard a good analogy once that compared the two, which said, “training teaches you how to fish but employee development teaches you have to be a pro fisherman!” Employee development is one of the most vital elements for any organization who wants to grow and be a success in the marketplace. In my experience as a consultant with other small and medium size organizations in the past, I saw many businesses that did not have an employee development program in place then wondered why they needed someone to come in and tell them why their business was failing and screaming for help. Constant employee development and training is one of the keys to successful growth when employees can learn how to do their jobs better and learn new skills for changes in the business environment. Would you agree? Can you tell the class what the difference between an established employee development program and new-hire training? What do you think the focus is for each one? Are they the same or are they different?
